Could Detroit be the new Amsterdam -- a city where prostitution and marijuana are both legalized to help attract young people and turn the troubled city’s prospects around?

Why not, barrister and occasional mayoral candidate Geoffrey Fieger said during a taping of “Michigan Matters” on what he would do if he walked in Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s shoes and tried to address the city’s woes.

“I could turn it around in five minutes,” Fieger said.

“I’d shovel the snow and I’d clean the streets and parks. Then, I’d tell the police department to leave marijuana alone and don’t spend one dime trying to enforce marijuana laws. I also would not enforce prostitution laws and I’d make us the new Amsterdam.”

“We would attract young people,” Fieger said. “You make Detroit a fun city. A place they want to live and they would flock here.”

Fieger, who ran as a Democrat for governor, appeared with Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, who took exception to his idea.

“How does that fix the schools or unemployment or illiteracy in the city?” Patterson said.

Besides, the outspoken Republican leader added, “Have you been to 8 Mile recently?” in reference to strip clubs and other elements found along certain stretches of the road.

Fieger still thought the idea had merits.

“Don’t let any self-appointed, self-righteous person say we couldn’t do it,” Fieger added. “The city of Detroit couldn’t get any worse.”

On other issues, Fieger said he changed his mind about running for mayor in the upcoming race now that Bing has said he will run again in 2013.

“I don’t want to run against an incumbent. Besides, it would be more interesting to be governor,” he said.

When asked to grade Bing, both Patterson and Fieger gave Bing a “B” saying the job was much tougher than the former steel executive and NBA Hall of Famer ever thought.

Prostitution should have been legal years ago. When I was in Greece in 1991, I would walk by brothels all the time & never thought anything of it. These were in nice neighborhoods. If the government would have woke up years ago & legalized weed & prostitution & taxed it, im sure our deficit wouldnt be as bad as it is.

We have nothing but hypocrites in office in Washington. They all smoke weed & bang hookers but oppose both of them in the public eye, LMAO!

Just like all the Anti-gay supporters in government who get caught fucking young men.... Fucking hypocrites if you ask me.... Legalize and Tax it.....It will help this country get on its feet without fucking over the middle class

Exactly, like the old saying goes 'scratch a saint, find a sinner'.

well unlike Detroit, you can walk wherever you want whenever you want in Amsterdam. at 4 am you'll be staggering through the red-light district with strange men offering you "coca" and underground sex shows (why would you want that over the giant selection of legal girls?), but no one is going to pull a gun and demand your money or knock you the fuck out because it's saturday. place feels safe. i think it even is for the most part.

legalizing pot and prostitutes is not all the sudden going to make Detroit an appealing tourist destination. everyone can smoke pot on their couch at home, and Detroit is nothing like Amsterdam in so many ways that just cannot be changed.

not saying they should not legalize the two. but that's not gonna create another Amsterdam.

I don't think this is a good idea as proposed. If they just stop enforcing the laws on marijuana and prostitution, it will just bring more crime to a messed up city and be bad for the whole movement. It has to be legalized, regulated, and taxed for this to work well. I agree with the general idea of ending prohibition, but leaving these industries unregulated and essentially ignored isn't the best idea.

I like Geoffrey Fieger, he's the attorney who defended Jack Kevorkian (if you were around in the 90's you might remember, he is the guy who did over a hundred assisted suicides in the Detroit area, got some prison time, he' s out now).

I agree, without no regulation, control and support services for people who screw up, it's bound to end up equally bad if not worse. The "whole package" is required as portuguese said it.
If this half-assed solution goes wrong then the only one profiting is DEA. They'll proceed to use Detroit as an excuse in order to increase their budget and secure agent's jobs.

thats real talk..

they should legalize other hard drugs too doing that would take them off the streets for the most part and the police would fight more of the crime that is really needed to be fought

i was reading something somewhere about if the was to legalize shit like heroin and coke then they wouldnt have a black market for it and then alotta people wouldnt do it because alotta people do them hard drugs just for the fact that its illegal

it would take away the black market then the gov could tax it and use that money

i dunno tho im mos def down with legalizing bud.. and i guess hookers too i mean thats 2 things thats gonna happen reguardless

"Could"?! It will, freedom tends to have a nice pull like that..

/I like NV just because of the freedoms of gambling/prostitution, and I don't even personally enjoy or do either of those activities.
