heroin addict, may be pregnant

yeah an abortion sounds like a good choice for you at the moment, some people in this thread do not want to hear that.. but its one of your best options if you really think about it.. you got pregnant, so you know your guys sperm is fertile and you know u are able of having a child.. so postpone it at the moment, and come back to it when you have your life together and have a good environment for the child to be born into.. think about the child not about what you think you want!

I can't believe somebody out there is SO FUCKED UP that they would ask about the drug laws about using with a baby on board. You would think that your conscience would tell you that this is wrong! unbelievable. TOO FAR

Do you plan on like never going to the doctor? Just.. delivering the baby yourself? I mean.. if you don't get clean and then go into labor and go to the ER, it isn't like they just deliver the baby, give it to you, and say "Thanks, see ya ! " .. They do scores of diagnostic testing, making sure they baby is healthy. And one of the first things they are gonna do is give you blood tests, with a tox screen.. They are gonna know if you/the baby is an addict.

I don't care if you say 'don't post'. This is totally unfair to the baby.

Go to the doctor, and get on methadone. It's pretty simple. Get a proper pregnancy test, then if you are truly pregnant please take the proper steps to get yourself/the baby clean. OR, just get an abortion if you really don't want the responsibility of raising a child. But whatever you do, please think of the kid and how much it's/your life will suck if you don't do things the right/responsible way.

I'm not trying to personally attack you, but it seems like you know the right thing to do, but just don't want to do it..

Didn't they find out that crack babies weren't so much worst than regular babies? I know benzos cause irreversible damage to children though. A nurse told me its not uncommon for children to be born dependent on opiates and having to be weaned off their mother's methadone, being born into withdrawals. But I don't know anything really. I'd suggest quitting for the sake of the child. If you don't quit, then don't have the child. Its unfair to harm the child even before they're born because you're still not wanting to quit drugs.

*Mod Note*
This is an issue that comes up frequently among people who use and are addicted so its an important discussion to have. I can fully appreciate that it raises strong feelings in many people but abuse directed at the OP will not be tolerated in here. Express your views, offer advice and leave the judgments and attacks out. Thanks :)

This is a VERY sensitive topic and its one that always arouses passion so its quite understandable. I've taken many classes to become an addictions counselor and this subject has been hands down the most divisive and emotional of anything we've discussed.

Here's a thread I moved over to Healthy Living which has the story of someone on pain management who decide to have children and the issues involved there.
Taking Oxycodone while pregnant...
Obviously it is different for someone who is in physical pain and "needs" the meds than one who abuses them for other reasons, but the mental illness model of addiction does blend the lines somewhat.

Regarding heroin addicts having children, since there is no way to prevent it without violating their basic rights I don't see the point of having a strong view on the subject. In general I personally don't think anybody should bring a child into the world unless they are able and willing to properly care for them, but as I said I also think the only thing stopping them from doing so should be their own resolve not to. Better education and social assistance programs are the most obvious answers to that I guess...

Don't let the guilt of bringing an opiate dependant baby in into the world weigh heavily on you.

Your baby would be opiate dependent, not addicted. There are a HUGE amount of factors that make someone an opioid addict, and have exposure to an opioid is just one of them. If you can get on methadone and stay on it, I say, have the kid. It would be a great idea. Don't feel guilty

However, if you can't kick the crack and won't stick on a methadone plan (which is basically all the free opioid you can handle by the way) then reconsider. Or have the baby, but you deserve a large amount of guilt for doing this.

ok so getting on methadone or bupe than the baby is gonna be in withdrawal in the first weeks of its life even if it got weened down that would suck. If you have the baby I would give it up for adoption cause you obviously don't make good choices. Not putting you down for that obviously I made lots of shitty choices too I'm on methadone but I'm not dumb enough to ever have a kid until I my shit is 100% together which means I am free from addiction for a LONG time.

Not going to the doctor when you are 2 months pregnant because you "don't like them" when you are addicted to opiates, smoke crack "occasionaly" and have hepatitis C? wow, on second thought maybe abortion is a good idea. Get to the fucking doctors. Seriously I would either get the abortion or at the very least give it up for adoption. What happens if you end p relapsing and are going back and forth addicted to opiates when you are raising your kid through the most crucial years of its life? you are gonna end up putting your needs in front of the kids when you need a fix and that is not fair. And given the relapse rate of addicts that is a very good chance that it will happen. Giving it up for adoption is slightly better but still the baby is gonna be born addicted to opiates and have hepatitis C. I don't know much about it but having hep c while you are just a small baby can not be good at all, it fucks your liver and lowers your immune system and that has to be dangerous to have that disease from birth the entire time your body is developing. Most people get that at you know late teenage years at the earliest when their body is almost all the way developed. simply put its life will probably suck and it would be good to put it out of his misery before he/she is self aware and fully concious, or give it away so it has a chance at a semi normal life.

However, I would urge you to reconsider bringing a child into this world. There is a vast overpopulation of human beings.

Everyone has the right to their opinion and the world is already over populated to the extent that we are using more resources anually than the earth is able to produce. Long story short 2.2billion people need to die in order to make sure the world will survive.

affasd, not all babies born to women dependent on maintenance medication experience withdrawal and even so, they can medically taper them and minimize discomfort. This is MUCH safer then subjecting a fetus to withdrawal which could result in miscarriage or health problems for the fetus. The standard protocol is to get someone maintained (historically on methadone but some are using bupe now) if they decide to carry to term.

I don't fully agree with everything affasd is saying but there are some good points. I think the most important thing you need to do is realize that you need help in some form... you can't make all these decisions alone and you can't just change your whole life overnight. No matter what you choose, you're going to have to see a doctor and in the interest of both your fetus and yourself, the sooner the better.

If you're living an addict lifestyle, then it won't be the best environment to bring a child into and if you want to raise the child then you're going to have to make substantial changes and it will be quite difficult. You need to address both the physical aspect of your dependence and the psychological aspect of transitioning to a life without drugs if you're considering keeping this child. This is a lot to consider and handle. I am not a professional, but I have been studying addictions counseling for a couple years now and have a pretty good grasp on your options, so if you'd like to discuss this or just need someone who won't judge you to talk to, please feel free to contact me any time.

Hey amapola. Thanks for sharing that link. I shared my story in that thread but I forgot to mention that I was in methadone bc of a heavy drug addiction. Heroin, oxy, coke, etc. I Also posted in this thread. I, along with a team of doctors weighed out the pros and cons of staying on the methadone while pregnant. If I didn't stay on it I could have lost my child. Methadone is FDA approved for pregnant women. My doctors convinced me that it was in mine and my unborn Childs best interest bc I was already high risk from having cervical cancer a few years prior and having surgery that makes the cervix weak.

My son had very little withdrawal symptoms and was able to wean veer quickly. There was no health issues from the methadone and still aren't any. He had the normal health issues of a premature baby. It had nothing to do with the methadone.

I struggled after he was born to stay clean. In no way was I putting drugs before my child and never will! If I used I did so after I put him to bed. I didn't use for a year after he was born. I think my reason for using was dealing with the passing of my father while I was pregnant. It's hard to explain. I'm a devoted mother. I'm married to a man who has never used drugs or been addicted to anything. My child comes first! I still use drugs but keep it recreational and after my son is asleep at night. I had to do a lot of soul searching and therapy after my son was born bc addiction is such a powerful disease and all I want is to be the best mother possible. And I am! Motherhood is great and an amazing experience. If I didn't have my child I would most likely be dead.

To the origal poster, I hope you find the strength I did. Being a mother is the most selfless act! And from your post I would have to say you are being selfish. You are harming your own child! I hope you have read all these posts on here bc so many of them are routing for you to make the right decision for that unborn innocent child. I hope you at least got to a doctor or made an appointment. There is so much help out there for women in your situation. The first place to find that help and get you heading in the right direction is going to a doctor. I know addiction is hard. Boy do I know! But by god GO TO A DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok so I felt the need to post on this cuz both my mom and dad were drug addicts when they found out my mom was pregnant. Both my parents were crack addicts but my mom stopped when she found out she was pregnant and my dad continued his use. So fortunatly nothing was wrong with me when I was born but my mom went bak to it after I was born. And growing up with to drug addict parents was terrible to say the least and my father went to prison and got himself a life sentence. And first hand experience from the child growing up in that situation, either you NEED to quit or have an abortion cuz im sorry but no child should have to go through what i went to, growing up we were homeless for a bit and even when we had places to stay my mom would kick me out and just growing up in the hood seeing all the dealers and thugs killing ppl infront of me and the whole lifestyle just ruined my life to the point were I wish my mom would have just had the dam abortion so please please please either quit or dont have the kid end up like me.

Sorry to hear about your home life growing up, its a very sad story. You were a product of your environment which seems to have had the worst effects on a child.

There are so many disturbing, judgmental posts in this thread. Bluelight is meant to be a place people come to get accurate harm reduction information. Do you really think someone who is pregnant would bother posting again, given the abuse from some of the posters and moderators here?

The most danger to the fetus is from withdrawal. Being stabilised on methadone or bupe is the safest option. Continuing to use means that you'll end up putting the baby under a lot of stress. Not all babies born to mums on methadone or bupe are born dependent. And if the baby is born dependent, it's a very simple process to withdraw them with oral morphine. It's not the end of the world despite the hysteria of lots of posters in this thread.

You need to get proper medical care as soon as possible. You are more likely to get into trouble with child protection services if you try to hide and manage this yourself. Front up and get some help.

Poor kid...

What's going to happen when the baby dies because you were too dumb to go visit a doctor? If you do end up having it, hopefully the baby will be re-possessed asap. Not because you're a drug addict, but because you're just plain old stupid. Worse than being addicted to meth, crack, and heroin all at once. You then expect to hear exactly what you want from people on this forum, because you yourself know how dumb you are for not seeing a doctor. For all you know it may already be too late for the fetus. And your reasoning is... "cuz you hate them."

My post may be harsh but I implore someone to disagree with it. Any non-drug addicted contributing member of society would be disgusted at the ignorance and neglect of this future mother. I say this because being bluelight, there is quite a bit of bias being here already.

Even CaPoNe, a poster with experience on this topic is telling you to either smarten up quick or just kill the baby. Don't even bother going to a clinic. Might as well just smoke till it's dead, since you obviously don't care. You got high, you neglected to use a condom, you got pregnant while still using. How dare you expect compassion and empathy. Quit cold turkey now. Withdrawl is a bitch, but it's nothing when you're trying to save a new innocent life. If you don't do it, you're scum. End of story.

Very powerful post. I applaud you for being alive despite your parents idiotic decisions. Good work, seriously.

This is quite dangerous advice. It is stated multiple times in this thread that the primary medical procedure would be to get stabilized on opioid maintenance medication to not subject the fetus to withdrawal. Why do you advocate quitting cold turkey?

Of course, but what other way is there when the person in question can't stand doctors?
