Cocaine What recreational drugs have been proven to cause hair loss?

Particularly cocaine and acid? An early twenties female has been losing hair for about 4 months: In the last two months, she's had coke about eight times, done shrooms twice, and e twice. She's smoked weed almost daily for the past couple of years. I've googled it and the connection between cocaine and hair loss seems to come mainly from anti-drug propaganda with no real proof. Anyone know someone who's had problems with hair loss? Since this person was losing hair before experimenting further with drugs, it seems doubtful that they have caused it. However, it's gotten worse but she's not sure if it has anything to do with drugs. Thanks!

Cuts in the cocaine maybe, either way it's something she should be seeing a doctor about.

I don't think I could name any street drugs that are toxic in any way to hair follicles. I've never heard of it before; usually only systemic poisoning (esp. radiation) or bad genetics is to blame.

Steroids!

If you rate anabolic steroids as a "street drug", they're a sure way to baldness.

Otherwise losing your hair is the last thing you should worry about when doing recreational drugs.

she saw a doctor who told her the hair and scalp look healthy, but at her request he did some blood tests on hormones and the like. Also, with the exception of the first time, she's done less than 5 lines on each night she's snorted coke

If you know how to use steroids correctly, this won't be likely.

If you are going to run a rough enough steroid, or a high dose of testosterone, then you might want to take another drug with this steroid, so as to prevent the testosterone from aromatizing. The issue is that testosterone is aromatized into dihydrotestosterone in excessive levels is what causes male pattern baldness, or at the least is one of very few factors for why men go bald.

Women have many more factors for going bald than men.

If you aren't aware of this, and also overdose steroids or use ones that are more likely to unnecessarily elevate DHT levels (while also the person would be unaware how to prevent this from happening excessively), then yes, steroids will probably make you go bald.

Dihydrotestosterone is responsible for male secondary sex characteristics, there is more information about this on wikipedia.

One guy I know lost hairs during hard raving years with lot of xtc pills, got "alopecia areata", been visited by tricologists and tried many therapies but nothing worked for him.

No need to use "she"...

haha, good to know

Yeah, it's really been freaking me out. Like I said, it's been going on for four months but has gotten worse in the last month. I can't seem to find any reliable info on whether coke could cause it. I haven't been a heavy user of anything but weed though...

I would guess iron deficiency or some other nutrient, but if you saw a doctor and they did blood tests that showed normal I don't know.

What is your diet like?

As amapola mentioned, iron deficiency is a common cause in women but also deficiency in a range of other vitamins, fatty acids, etc can cause thinning hair. Has your weight or diet changed in the last six months?

Also, what medications are you on? Are you on hormonal birth control and if so, for how long?

my hair seems to thin a lot when I do a lot of adderall for a week or two.. i heard it has something to do with dopamine converting to DHT or something? anyone know? and how to counter it?

So the doctor I saw called today and said that I have high levels of testosterone and another hormone that causes hair loss. I scheduled a follow-up to get referred to a specialist. I haven't taken steroids or anything like that, so I'm thinking drugs are probably irrelevant here.. hopefully! I've been on BC for 6 years and I've been consistently anemic/low on iron since I was a child. I don't get stressed when I can't get ahold of drugs. In fact, I'd be perfectly fine if I didn't have access to them.. I just enjoy them!

It's more likely it's the physical stress of stimulant usage aggravating it, though psychological stress isn't good either.

It sounds like the main factor here is just bad genetics. Hope you can make the best of this :)

Everyone covered the uppers but...

I'm going bald as fuck. I didn't know I could blame drugs. Sweet.

I started balding at 16, I am adopted so I had no clue if it was hereditary or not, but I did alot of reading and had some hormone tests done, everything normal, I have since found my biological family and discovered it is hereditary but I am a heavy marijuana smoker and I cant find the original article I read about this but...

And I still smoke every day and am still balding so after finding out my non cannabis consuming family members (brothers from same mother) lost it anyways I said why try to fight it, Ill just make up for it with facial hair =D

Sorry if this needs to be in the cannabis section its my first day.

Yeah, I've also heard of a couple people who lost hair from hard raving and taking a lot of ecstasy pills. I have no evidence to back this up though and maybe it wasn't the ecstasy that did it.

Yeah, I have no evidence too but I think it's connected, I feel sorry for the guy I know, he's very ugly with this kind of maculated alopecia.
