High,

Sorry if this has been covered I did some searching around and couldnt get quite what i was looking for. I got a bottle of valerian extract, each pill has 400mg valerian root, and 110mg valerian root extract. How much would you reccomend to get the most out of it.

I was also planning on taking some trazadone and weed with it, any thoughts?

Also ive heard valerian is comprable to valium, how true is this?

^ Not very. It can be relaxing for some people, for others it does nothing. Try taking three or four at once and see if you feel anything... if not, then build up the dose from there.

Some people get stimulated from valerian though, in a weird paradoxical reaction.

Haha, no. IME, valerian root is comparable to very light doses of benzodiazepines, with an overall dysphoric feeling added to it. Valerian isn't good for chilling ime, and it would be a waste of weed to smoke with it.

You may as well start with one to see how it affects you. Frankly, I never got anything that couldn't be attributed to placebo on any dose (I think I took up to four at a time. Can't remember the dosage though.) I certainly would not compare it to diazepam (Valium). Some people find it to be worthwhile though, so perhaps someone else can answer your questions better than me.

actually, Valium got its name from the Valerian root. They are not related chemically (obviously because Valerian is a herb, and valium is a pharmaceutical compound) but Valerian root is also known as "natures valium". Diazepam (Valium) is a synthetic analogue to Valerian. That is to say that Valium doesn't come from Valerian, the active compounds are chemically similar.

Something to help you 'relax and sleep', yes..
Something to help you get a buzz. NO.

go buy some bars, or v-cuts if you would like a benzo buzz. Valerian wont do much for you, buddy.

hope this helped!

Thanks everyone

Are there any risks with mixing the valerian with trazadone?

I'm not seeing the similarity in stucture personally. From what I've been reading, it's true that both drugs act as GABA-a allosteric modulators, but they act at distinct sites. Valerenic acid does not bind the the benzodizepine receptor (located at the interface of alpha and gamma sub-units of the GABA-a complex), but bind to sites on the beta sub-unit of the GABA-a complex.

ch1na, I think you're thinking of depakote (sodium valproate/valproic acid) which was named after valeric acid, a major constituent of valerian root. Depakote is actually an analogue of valeric acid so assuming they have similar pharmacological effects, the only real consideration is...

trazodone ↔ divalproex sodium

Applies to: trazodone, Depakote (divalproex sodium)

MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.

MANAGEMENT: During concomitant use of these drugs, patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression. Ambulatory patients should be counseled to avoid hazardous activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination until they know how these agents affect them, and to notify their physician if they experience excessive or prolonged CNS effects that interfere with their normal activities. ^You most likely won't get any euphoria from valerian and if you did, trazodone would probably kill it anyway. With these drugs in mind, the only use I could see for the valerian is possibly, marginally helping with anxiety/paranoia from the weed. I wouldn't expect anything else.

Yea i was jus tryin to get some kind of euphoria but i guess ill jus stick to the weed.

Gotcha. I find trazodone kinda dysphoric actually, I wouldn't take for reasons other than sleep. You may as well pop a couple valerian capsules and hour or so before smoking, it couldn't hurt.

Thats exactly what i did and i felt pretty calm and jus relaxed, i dnt think it was placebo.

And yea i dont ever take traz to make me feel good, i get too tired to feel good, honestly i dont really get euphoria from benzos either
