Short-acting barbs in Canada

While I have no interest in becoming addicted to yet another drug, I am detoxing off methadone and have intense insomnia. I have tried all benzos and all other sleep medications and they make me so restless I can't sleep. It's unusual, I know. I've also tried non-drug-related ways of achieving sleep (herbal, relaxation techniques, exercise, etc.). The last time I hit zero in a detox I was up for a week before I managed to knock myself out with a ton of phenobarb.

I'm curious about the state of (and policy regarding) short acting barbituates being prescribed in Canada and North America. I know phenobarb is available as a pill and have been prescribed it before, but I am worried about the risk of OD due to its long action.

2nd paragraph edited by mod though OP can reword it if I got it wrong.

Your best bet is to just talk to your doctor about it. The type of discussion that these "what do/can you get from you doctor" threads lead to isn't appropriate for the Other Drugs forum. Also as it is Canada specific it should be made in NASADD but I think that is besides the point.

Best of luck and if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

edit:
Reopened and moved to NASADD

Just to be clear, I'm not interested in why people got such prescriptions, what they said to get them, etc. I simply want to know if drugs like seconal, nembutal and tuinol are available in Canada.

Nembutal (pentobarbital), Mebaral (mephobarbital), Seconal (secobarbital), Brevital Sodium (methohexital), Surital (thiamylal), Butisol (butabarbital) and Sodium thiopental (thiopental) are all available in Canada but only in hospital use. You will never get them prescribed as an out patient. There are many others that are used for anesthesia, but these are the ones I know of.

The only ones you will get prescribed and be able to take home are Luminal (phenobarbital) and Fiorinal (butalbital). The Fiorinal is mixed with aspirin and codeine I believe.

The only short acting barb still scripted in Canada at all is butalbital which is in fiorinal or fioricet. You could get fiorinal with codeine and that could help abit.

Also even though it's not a barb meprobamate is still available by prescription in canada under the name mep282. It has caffiene and codeine and aspirin in it so it's for tension headaches like fiorinal.

Phenobarbital is also prescribed in Canada, although that's long-acting.

And a bunch of the ones I mentioned in my first post in this thread are also available, but only in hospital use.

Are the hospital-use-only, short-acting barbituates only available in liquid form?

It's been many years, at least 13 or 14 since I've seen any reds around... sure wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few tho!

Placydyl was the only drug that gave me a few hours of sleep while kicking but that was discontinued in the late 90s. In the US seconal was released, good luck getting it scripted, although Euthanasia is legal in Oregon, if you can convince the doc you have a terminal ilness nembutal was available at animal pharmacies in TJ a while ago but the NY times did a strory on "death tourists" and shut down that scene for a while (the pharmacist aparently didn't know it was for humans- probaly figured it was for their 3 or 4 dying dogs 8), and many mexicans are Catholic so religious convictions over rode finacial considerations, this may have changed back- but your probably noy interested in a rode trip, Barring that, you'll get your sleep cycles in time after abstinence- cannabis might help marginally.

Good luck, I feel for you, not only do we experience horrific symptoms we have to experience days of insomnia to feel al the symptoms in all their glory without the mercy of sleep.:(

If you can get a hold of GHB or GBL I hear that it does wonders for short periods of mericiful sleep but requires frequent reducing- a dad detoxed his duaghter that way.

thanks for the comment. The insomnia, for me, is the second worst thing about withdrawal (after the RLS). For the runs I can take imodium, and for some reason I never vomit in withdrawal--I don't even get nauseous. Maybe if I'd done cold turkey I'd puke.

I'm at 2 mg and can now sleep 2 hours without anything, so I guess I'll just keep exercising and building on that. Oddly enough, the energy that suboxone gives me prevents me from really feeling the lack of sleep. I do worry about running my body down though.

Cannibis gives me The Fear. Didn't use to, but what can you do? Alcohol makes me feel ill. The only drugs my body handles well are opiates and barbs, but I've quit one and can't get the other.

It could be worse, though--some people seem to have major trouble tapering off bupe. Every taper I've done so far (from 10 down to 2) hasn't really made a difference. The step to 0mg will likely be difficult, though I'm trying to keep an open mind about it. I had a massive habit--1000 mg of oxy per day for about half the week and 120-140 mg of methadone the other days. The transfer onto bupe was so nasty that everything else feels like a stroll through the bluebells.

"here's what this story's told:
you feel like Mudd, you'll end up Gold,
you feel like lost, you'll end up found,
so amigo suck those tapers down"

I'm just a month into suboxone...after 10 years of being prescribed 10 oxy 80's a day. That stuff is a fucking miracle....I had no withdrawls of any kind....and as an I.V. user, thats just to good to be true.I am suffering from insomnja as well; I find that temazepam is the most effective benzo and trazadon works well in conjuntion with the temazy's.
I used to get nembutal and tuinal (seconal and amytal) in the 70's,and I'd give my left nut for some of that sweet rubbery release! Are you cats 100% on no seconal or nembutal from the pharmacy?I was going to try for some next week....had no idea,,,Good luck,Keytonius

^ yes, if you're asking about Canada. I actually had a script for nebutal in 2003 and couldn't fill it anywhere--I tried at my city's biggest pharmacy (which stocked a nearby hospital) and they said you need some special clearance to import it from the U.S. (no Canadian company makes it), and even then I'm pretty sure it's only in liquid form so good luck getting a script for that. the only pharmacy barbs you can get are phenobarb (which is weak, in my opinion) and fiorinal (which has an opiate in it, so not suitable for detoxing).

my habit was very similar both in terms of dosage and duration. be grateful you can sleep on temazepam--it made me twitch every 5-10 seconds even if I took enough to knock me out. two months at zero and I can now catch 3-4 hours of sleep--6 if I run 3k and do weights.

it gets better, but I look like a starved raccoon now.

In the US, Marathon Pharmaceuticals acquired the rights to produce to Amobarbital Sodium and Secobarbital Sodium. The Amytal is only available for injection, but the Seconal comes in 100mg capsules. I don't know if their products are also available in Canada, but I can't imagine a doctor ever writing a prescription for Seconal anyways.
