So, I want to avoid all of the details, and just ask is 5.5 grams APAP taken at once going to induce noticeable illness? Is this dose toxic? Is it possibly fatal (doubt it)? I've read all over the internet, and have gotten conflicting answers about APAP overdose and toxicity. SO, I come here, where I trust. What should I do/expect after a dose of this quantity. PLEASE, don't ask why I ask this. I just need to know what 5.5 grams will do to a 160 lb individual (male). Thanks in advance. :)

4g is the highest amount recommended in a 24hr period.

You might have moderate to severe stomach pain, other people are better qualified to answer this though.

this was posted in the other drug forum. Probably will get your answer there.

More than 4,000mg over 24 hours can cause liver toxicity, so yes your dose does have the potential to damage your liver.

Are you likely to experience fulminant hepatic failure from that dosage? No, unless you're taking it in proximity to alcohol or haven't eaten anything in quite a while.

Symptoms from acetaminophen overdose resulting in hepatic failure don't even show up for 24-48 hours after the toxic dose, which is why an abundance of caution is required dosing acetaminophen. By the time there are outward symptoms, there isn't any treatment.

One option to help reduce the risk of acetaminophen toxicity is to take s-adenosyl methionine (commonly called SAMe or just 'methionine.) If I have to take acetaminophen, I always take an equal about of methionine as well, as it can help reduce/reverse any potential toxicity. Its available from most any pharmacy or supplement store.

From personal experience you may feel rapid heart pounding and extreme anxiety. You'll make it through, though. Lethal dose is round the 8g range.

It's only very rarely fatal at that dose level. It all depends on how healthy your liver is, how much protein you've eaten lately, fast liver enzymes convert it to the toxic metabolite faster, alcohol use, genetics and too many things to list here. Don't take that risk, It's just not worth it for a high. Do a CWE or don't take it.

Leave your liver alone for a while, it'll return to normal most likely, within a few weeks.

If you are not drinking or doing anything else that is rough on the liver, you are likely to come out of this okay (minus probably some discomfort), but DO NOT DO THIS AGAIN. liver damage is cumulative and you won't feel it until it is too late.

Milk thistle helps with necrosis caused by acetaminophen toxicity and n-acetylcysteine, a.k.a NAC, is a direct precursor to glutathione, the enzyme which safely breaks down acetaminophen. Milligram to milligram for NAC. A booster of 600 milligrams of milk thistle would do the trick. You will likely be fine without this, but other than abstaining, this is as good as it gets.

5.5g is a massive dose. I hope you haven't been drinking alcohol at around the same time as well. I would still go to the hospital if I were you simply due to the fact that you took more than 5 times the maximum recommended dosage. They can provide you with ways of reducing the damage your liver may incur that you may not have available at your home and also keep you under close observation.

P.S. I realize you may hate going to the hospital. Many of us, including me, detest it. But your liver needs all the help and support you can give it right now so suck it up and go. Health comes first.

+1 to this. I take milk thistle daily b/c I come close to the 4g mark all the time and it's on an empty stomach, and I mix alcohol... =D

Edit: Btw, Alex000, how's that liver feeling?

Google apap hepatic toxicity dose and you will get more specific results. 150 mg/kg seems to be the lowest threshold for toxic effects in the average person (i.e., not alcoholic or otherwise liver-impaired). You weigh 72 kg, for future reference.

I agree..you'll be okay, but I would go get some standardized milk thistle 300mg and take 3 capsules 2 or 3 times a day for a week or two..I would also recommend that you not drink or take any more tylenol for a while..

It has been 54 hours, and I have only experienced minimal GI discomfort. Am I still in danger?
