Thanks for the kind words guys :) Down to 10mg Valium now, will be switching to the 2mg tabs soon then hopefully after some more time passing I'll be free of these things.

edit: I'm aiming to get off them completely Lefty, though I'll have to wait and see how I feel. May have to stay on 5mg or something for several weeks, but at this point I don't see benzos being a positive part of my life, they seem to cause more problems than they get rid of.

Sad thing is for me, I'm trying to get on them.

Had my second Dr appointment today after waiting two weeks to see him from the last time and I told him the Pristiq prescription pills did absolutely nothing to my anxiety and panic attacks and made me feel worse off then I actually am - so he prescribes them to me for another two weeks??!!

I am seeing him again on Thursday and won't be having any more of these pills, didn't even go get the prescription.

I have also booked in for another Dr opinion on Tuesday so we will see how that goes, very frustrating.
 
I see a Psychiatrist every month, but I'm too embarrassed to request a prescription of Valium (Diazepam, 50 x 5mg pills) every month so I ask him once every 3 months. I use Valium occasionally for my Social Anxiety or if I have a Panic Attack.

I don't drink alcohol anymore, but I recall on my very first time, I needed at least 20mg before I could feel a bit relaxed (I'm not overweight or buff) which was quite odd considering that the general medical guidelines online seem to recommend 10mg at the very most...

I usually dose at 25mg on a PRN basis, so a box of 50 x 5mg would be 10 shots, which is enough to last me 3 months, so it's not that bad. :)

Yeah the doctor also is going to refer me to a psychologist, how much does it cost to see one?

I know it's all free to see the doc but hoping it's the same with a psychologist.

I also have a feeling that my Dr doesn't exactly want to be the one to prescribe be valium or xanax or w/e else is out there which is why he is referring me to a psychologist, which is totally fine - just may take a while.

Under the mental health plan, you should be able to see a psychologist for free, at least up to a certain amount of visits per year, which I think is 12 or 18.

If your doctor is bulk billing you, you could ask to be referred to a psychiatrist (maybe for something that your psychologist brings out in session), who can also bulk bill. I believe it's up to their discretion.

I don't believe a psychologist can prescribe medication, they're more for teaching you strategies to deal with your depression/anxiety without drugs.

Ahhh well it looks like I will have to deal with it myself then since there isn't much chance I am going to be prescribed any prescriptions that will work.

I will still see the psychologist and hope I will get better.

If nothing then it looks like well, I dunno, I've used all options and it looks like I can't be treated - sigh.

In my opinion, my psychologist has helped me a lot more than my psych who gave me drugs.

Hoping won't change much mate, you've got to want to change yourself and listen to those trying to help you, then put the effort in. There's no quick fix for what a lot of us on this forum have in anxiety and depression. Although there is temporary relief in pills, they'll become more of a problem than what you already have if you rely on them to solve everything.

This is exactly why a psychologist can help you, as they helped me, see a different perspective.

Also, have a look at the dark side benzo threads. It's no cure man.

If your on a mental health plan and get a referral from a doctor, a psychologist's fee will be subsidised by medicare.

I think a psychologist will be between $150 to $200 for an hour. On your first visit, you'll probably get about $100 back. The more you go the cheaper it gets, sometimes getting down to next to nothing.

Psychologists can't prescribe drugs. If I were you I would get your antidepressants, benzos, whatever from a GP or even a psychiatrist and go to the psychologist for therapy and for solutions to your problems.

As Opi8 said, benzos will only treat the symptoms. therapy and the like will get to the causes of the problems and help give you strategies to make yourself better or at least manage the problems. Benzo withdrawal fucking sucks too.:!
 
Meh goes somethin like this

Valium= dont do alot really...
Xanax = turns me into a bipolar mega depressive
Royhpnol = who when where?? althimerz
serpax = okish for sleep

Clonazepam aka Klonopin orange pill 0.5mg = oh yeahhhhhh lovely bliss calm. like a smooth Malt
whisky and lasts 24hrs. 8o8o8o8o8o. Course i use all this cuz i get crap anxiety
and well GPs give me any of them as i am on Disability.

A psychologist can't prescribe you shit munter, but if they can help you with your issues without doing so this may be a blessing in disguise. I really have no idea if you can get referred to bulk billing psychiatrists, I assume its possible but probably reasonably hard.

I would also guess that a bulk billing psychiatrist may be less willing to adhere to a patients pharmacological demands than one getting paid directly, this is mere speculation on my part as I have no experience in this regard.

I guess if this is what's best then I will go with the 'therapy' and then if that doesn't work I will try get a prescription.

Kinda sucks, my old Dr. in NSW would of been so much more help instead I have this shitty melbourne indian doc... great! lol

I've booked in for an appointment with another doctor for a third opinion, we will see how it goes - just going to be honest and it should work out for me.

Told the other Dr. everything, what I was prescribed, she was much more helpful but instead I've been prescribed 'Lexapro" and to come back in another two weeks, sighhhhhhhh.

So hopefully this works and is better then that Pristiq stuff even though its an SSRI.

Just sucks, cause I don't think it's going to work!

Why can't Doctors just prescribe the thing that works, but then again I can't diss it till I try it.

Good luck. its probably the best SSRI for not having side effects as it is the weakest.

If you dont think it will work then it wont, ill just tell you straight out if you have that negative thinking about these crappy SSRI's, and youve just gotten the least active weakest ssri there is.. theres not much chance of it helping anything. and im guessing she put u on 20mg too?

pretty much all of the above ruins any chancve of even a placebo fix

Lol yeah, I did a lot of research on Benzos before requesting one off my Psychiatrist. Withdrawing from Benzos incorrectly can be lethal as opposed to Opioids which would be very unpleasant but rarely lethal.

I didn't want Xanax (alprazolam) or Ativan (lorazepam) coz their half lives are very short compared to the others and would cause the WORST withdrawals if I ever got hooked, and anecdotally they cause more of a sleepy/stoned feeling.

(Apparently Xanax 2mg bars have a decent street value.)

Therefore I chose Valium, which is actually very versatile in terms of medical and recreational use, both a modern and a classic. At 25mg, it makes me a bit mellow and relaxes my muscles, so it reminds me of a low dose of Cannabis, but without the dry mouth and less munchies.

I think he prescribed it to me with no hesitation coz I told him that I was very aware of the addictive potential and that I'd be using it PRN.

Anecdotally from other people that I've spoken to, many of the SSRI antidepressants may improve the mood of those with Clinical (moderate-severe) Depression but at the cost of negative side effects, in particular weight gain and reduced libido.

There's a drug called Bupropion that's currently only used in Australia for quitting smoking called "Zyban", but in America they also market it as an NDRI antidepressant called "Wellbutrin", which avoids the weight gain and reduced libido issue, most likely due to increased Dopamine levels. In fact, Wellbutrin is more likely to result in an increased confidence and sex drive. But you'll have to order it online, or ask your GP to prescribe you Zyban because you "smoke cigarettes" and you wanna quit...
