"Darkness cannot be dissipated with more darkness.
While her co-hosts may have criticized Charlie Sheen over a recent report that he's skipping rehab to go back to work, Whoopi Goldberg says she understands the decision. "The View" host revealed Wednesday that she was once a high-functioning drug addict.

"He is an alcoholic, he is a drug user,” Goldberg said of Sheen. “He knows he has a lot of people he’s responsible for. Having been a drug addict, I feel I can say this… I was a functioning drug addict, I showed up for work because I knew a lot of people would be out of work and I wouldn’t get a check that I needed to buy my drugs."

Things got so bad for Goldberg that she became terrified to leave her bed for days because she thought something was under it. She even went to the bathroom in her bed.

As one who watches The View daily (hahaha - shut up *wink*) I'd guess heroin as her DOC (though could have been more than one drug !?). In some episodes of the View she referenced times when she used heroin - putting two and two together, sounds like a reasonable guess (?).

Hey man I give it up for her to admit something like that just out of the blue man, who would just go on national television and say shit like that.

We all understand what it's like to have to function and do things when we had a habit, im not sayin one so bad that you shit the bed tho, that's just fucked up.

i always thought she was a crackhead. I hate it when people brag about their sobriety, to me its just as bad as bragging about how much drugs you can take,

I have never really liked Whoopi Goldberg, for whatever reason, but I have to say I respect her coming out on national television admitting this and sticking up for someone copping shit in the limelight for their drug use at the minute. It is also refreshing to see a former drug user acknowledge that drug users actually need money for drugs and as a result many of us are actually motivated to work as a result of our drug use, I can say for me personally that I had always planned to take a year off after high school but it ended up I was in the workforce within 7 weeks of leaving school as I needed the money to sustain my drug use.

A little OT but while I don't condemn Charlie Sheen for his partying it does shit me just a little bit how celebrities can get away with rumours of 20 thousand dollar briefcases of hard drugs in their house with seemingly very little police investigation or condemnation. I don't advocate anyone being persecuted for drugs but I also don't agree with people getting away with shit just because they are famous, and I am pretty damn sure if it got out I might have had 20K of coke in my possession I would have the cops so far up my ass.

LOL at the comment above about bragging about sobriety being as bad as bragging about how many drugs one can take. I agree that bragging of this nature can be very annoying, especially when given in a preachy or condescending manner. At the same time I also think that sobriety for a former addict is something to be proud of, and I can see why in their eyes it is something possibly worth bragging about. So long as it isn't all they talk about and they aren't passing judgement on someone for things they once did then I don't generally have a problem with it.

What was she addicted to?
non drug users don't really care, which is why it's not in the article. but it's extremely relevant...

it'd be nice if people didn't view all "drugs"* as one (evil) concept.

* except ones that are already present in the lives of you and those you know, which is usually caffeine and alcohol. and sugar, sex, love, television, and food

^the fact that she's whoopi goldberg makes me suspect crack.

plus the fact that was what charlie sheen was into and she was defending him by saying she had been there and worn the pooey t shirt.

plus i brought a crack head home once and she started doing gooey shits everywhere, smearing a little bit on the walls:\

another vote for stimulants, sounds like meth psychosis or something. I don't really know anyone who thought there were monsters under their bed from opiates.... could be wrong, but yeah, charlie got busted for crack, that would be relevant

Look at her age, then guess.

She's 55, when did most people start doing drugs? Late teens early 20s?
it's 2011, she was in her 20s in the late 70s. Anyone wanna guess what drug was big in the late 70s early 80s?

Hint: (watch the movie 'Blow' if you can't get it)

All this is speculation, but it makes sense.
