i'm really suffering with this....

anybody who has actually overcome this who can give me hope, as well as ideas based on what worked for you?

the way to deal with it is by exposing yourself to social situations and just practice talking to people. its just practice and each time it gets a little easier until its easy all the time. dont worry about what people think because people are nice and nobody is judging you. besides, people will tolerate a lot of shit from people before being annoyed.

hope my random advice helps. i suffer the same problem and think i always will but its manageable. everyone is different and its what makes you special. sure, other people might seem super confident and stuff but they have their own problems.

theres more important things in life anyway than talking to people and when you feel insufficient in one area of your personality, you tend to compensate for it in other ways. for example, im sure you are amazing at something like music, art or maybe you are super intelligent at something?

drugs work great...benzos...alcohol....opiates...whatever, but they're not gonna solve your problem. The only true way to solve your social anxiety is to be more social. Force yourself to confront people. Pay attention to social people and take notes. What do they say? How do they carry on/maintain a conversation?

I have social anxiety too and drugs work, but just just practising being more social works better.

practice. maybe read some books and watch some videos on how to be confident. dont depend on drugs either, that will lead you down a route full of problems

I wouldn't say I've overcome social anxiety, but I have been on medication for a while. I take 2 tabs (so 1 mg) of the 0.5 mg alprazolam (2-3 times daily - I get 180 tabs a month), I also have taken several different SSRI's in the past until I found one which is helping me - escitalopram (20mg once daily). I also take Dexedrine 10 mg twice daily and Seroquel 50 mg once at bedtime.

Mostly the alprazolam has been a miracle worker for me. It drastically changed my anxiety levels instantly and now being stable on the escitalopram is helping even more. The only downside to this is the tolerance (as you can see I get 180 tabs a month) and dependence. If I were to stop taking alprazolam tomorrow (i've been on it daily since mid 2007), I would be in hell.

I also do dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for my borderline and it helps with stress and anxiety.

I initially tried therapy without medication (exercise, meditation, etc), but it never worked for me. So I ended up seeing a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorder, and PTSD (I also have ADHD, but that was diagnosed when I was younger).

BTW, I'm also on methadone at 130 mg a day.

Right, I recently got over this myself, and its really just relaxing and being happier. Dont take any drugs to cure it as most are actually the cause. Maybye have some alcahol one time at a party or somthing and you'll see that its really easy.

Why do you care what people think? Everyones just a human, nothing more nothing less, so go out there and communicate with them! Dont place people on pedistals. Dont get worked up if you make a slip up. The more you try, the worse the results. Just relax, its that simple.

Social situations are a gift, not a curse.

Good luck, and I hope you have the same burden lifted off your shoulders that I did.

I had it a little bit when I was young but when I tried weed for the 1st time, that gave me the courage to say fuck it, & gave me the "I dont care attitude" that is how I roll now. Could care less what people think or say about me nowadays.

Usually when people have a social phobia is when they are usually worried about what others are saying or supposedly thinking about them. You cant control what others think or say about you so you just gotta do your own thing & roll with it.

Do you still use weed for that purpose? If so, does it still work?

I agree! I have really bad anxiety which fueled a very bad opiate habit thru the course of a year, leading to cocaine MDMA heroine and just about every other drug u can think of. Which led 2 a yr on SMT and Xanax. The Xanax lead to rebound anxiety (90x 1mg tabs a mth) so rlly the only way is mentally overcoming ur anxiety. I haven't figured this 1 out yet lol but I can tell u meds r a very temp fix eventually leading to dependence n once it digs in it's not easy to overcome n will make the anxiety worse. The breathing exercises n meditation sound interesting but I kno meditation is complicated. Lol

Cocaine & stims cause anxiety for me, not social but none the less, its anxiety. i wont touch stims any more.

LSD, if its good, will make you face your fears, been there, done that.
