Hey there bluelighters im new here so be nice...

Ive got a question if anyone can help out,
ive been suffering from insomnia for around 8 years now with the last 3 years been the worst. Ive been to multiple doctors and explained my circumstances (not asking for benzos or anything) just asking if there is anything they would recommend to help me relax and stay asleep.
Around a 6 months ago my gf was prescribed a low dose of seriquel (25mg) and she suggested i give it ago and see if it helped with a few days of taking a small dose half of a 25 mg or a whole depending on how bad i couldnt sleep i noticed a substantial difference in my sleeping patterns, i was sleeping incredibly well and waking up feeling great. My question is this how should i approach a doctor to tell him this without sounding like a drug addict trying to get a fix?
or if anyone knows anywhere that i could go to discuss my sleeping problems it would be much appreciated.

thanks!:)

If you've had documented insomnia for 8 years I think you'll be okay. What have the doctors tried so far that hasn't worked? Either way tell the truth and you should be fine. Unless the truth is you are a drug addict trying to get a fix in which case you should lie through your teeth.

You really should have no troubles getting a script for seroquel, unless your looking for benzos.

I'm on seroquel to help me sleep and it really has no abuse potential like alprozolam or clonazepam, nor would it help alleviate WD's of some drug

So if you just say that you have tried it and it helped your insomnia i dont see why the doctor wouldn't prescribe

been on serquel before nasty drug not to be used long term. my cousin is on it from meth psychosis and has been for yrs and he is starting to shake like m j Fox.
maybe a tricyclic or hetracyclic AD could work better

Seroquels are the ultimate sleep pills n will knock out out straight away no problems whatsoever n has little to no recreation value. I accidently ingested half of a 300mg pill once and boy did it knock me out lol, im lucky i was at home. I dont think ud have any problems getting that off ur doctor but best to speak with them n find out whats the best treatment and options.

have never tried seroquil, but my brother used to take it for insomnia and giving up pot (maybe he had a psychosis he never told us about?).

I get really bad insomnia too. I used to use stilnox or imarest/imavane. great for short term but will wuickly build a tolerance. You've no doubt tried both of these.

Restavit, an antihistamine might be good if you need a break from the 'harder and more addictive' sleeping tablets.

You prob know all this - but clean up your sleep hygiene, diet. lay off coffee, booze, stimulants. exercise every day. oh nad have sex with your girlfriend before you try to go to sleep (haha had several doctors tell me to do this - one once joked he would write out a fake medical recommendation to my girlfriend suggesting this as good therapy).

Also, look at dealing with whatever stress is causing this. often in terms of stress, anxiety or depression, sleep is the first thing to go. Maybe see a psych or a sleep therapist.

but after 8 years you have probably heard all this before.

Seroquel is not a drug of abuse, so you shouldn't have problems asking for it. As lagger said though, in some patients long term use can lead to Parkinson's type symptoms due to dopamine antagonism. The risk is less then it is with the typical antipsychotics, but it's still there.

Many pharmacists consider doxylamine (Restavit) a potentially addictive drug, and some will ask you a lot of questions if you ask for it. Just make sure you don't buy it too often from the one place though and you will be fine. :)

Yeah i've noticed that. codeine and restavit, i get asked a million questions about.

don't actually like restavit because it makes me feel like shit the next day. I'd be interested to know why it is considered addictive.

luckily for the past few weeks I have been sleeping naturally.

^ Some people become dependent on it for sleep... it can happen with the other antihistamines as well but for some reason doxylamine succinate is the one pharmacists always talk about. That and the Unisom sleeping gels, which they like to talk about junkies using to mix with their shots. :\

Doxylamine can make me feel a bit groggy the next day as well, but not as bad as chlorpheniramine does, which has a much longer half-life. Sometimes it feels as though I feel more tired the next day then I did the night before when I took it as a potentiator with codeine!

Oh, I'll try to be nice :). Ya best bet with insomnia issues is to ask your local GP for some benzodiazepines, in particular Temazepam/Nitrazepam/Flunitrazepam. Just a low dose for each medication here (10 mg, 5 mg, 0.5 mg respectively). Is it like full blown insomnia like Edward Norton's character in the movie called "Fight Club"? Or is it sporadic (meaning from time to time)?. The other, just as lethal and dangerous (due to tolerance/withdrawal etc.) drug(s) that you could ask for would be either Zolpidem (Stillnox) or Zoplicone (Imrest)...).

I had a short stint with addiction to Promethazine for insomnia. The positives barely outweighed the negatives at first and after 6 months or so, taking it was horrible. Not worth taking every night, and the hangover is horrible.

Sero is great for sleep, my doctor won't give me it even though it is one of the few things I have had success with sleeping from. Just explain every thing you have tried and that seroquel works and the doctor should give it to you.

Mirtazapine worked great for sleep for me for about 3 months, you could try an anti-depressant along those lines.

I'm not defending the Z class drugs but I would dispute that they are as addictive as benzos. I've taken them every night (sometimes up to 4 pills a night) for like 6 to 9 months at a time, and never had withdrawals. benzos I can't say the same for.

no doubt he has been scripted for benzos and zolps if he has been suffering it for 8 years. Stilnox or temazapam are generally one of the first things that are prescribed.

All the first-generation antihistamines tend to have a lot of side effects, but for OTC sleep aids nothing else beats them really. Did you have any WD symptoms from ceasing use after 6 months?

This also has anti-histamine effects, which helps with sedation and reducing allergic/inflammatory reactions. It's funny you mention it, because I've been using it recently with codeine and it isn't too bad. :)

Not that I remember, but it was a long time ago and if I did I was probably drunk all the time which I was most of the time back then.

What dose do you use? It doesn't help any more and I take 45mg a night. When I started though, I wouldn't even wanna be awake when it kicked in.. Although it was amazing with fentanyl, really kicked in the hardcore dream scape nodding. Now I get around 3 hours sleep a night and have pretty much resigned to the fact that the doctor isn't gonna help and I'm never gonna sleep properly.

Seroquel works great for sleep every once in a while but I found in the past with repeat use you need more of it (like everything?), and it leaves you feeling pretty zonked out during the day with higher doses.

Not sure what the risk is of tardive dyskinesia with low doses used for sleep but might be worth looking into.

In the low doses prescribed for sleep seroquel actually works mainly as an anti-histamine. Not until you start going up in dose that it starts working on serotonin receptors and then higher still it'll start working on dopamine. This makes me think you won't have a problem with TD at the low doses used as a sleep aid...not entirely sure of this though.

Really? Huh...interesting. Albeit, a tad bit weird though for you to not experience full blown GABAergic drug-related withdrawals.

Oooh! And I forgot about clonidine (Catapress) to the OP. Shit used to knock me out cold, even when on Amps...!

^ back when I was doing them I was never even told they were addictive. Doctor was happy to hand them out even with a bulging tolerance. only once, recently has a doctor mentioned they were addictive and that he was hesitant to prescribe (though he still did).

I might not be able to do 4 hours of exercise a day (you know an hour of rowing, half an hour of weight lifting, half an our skipping, have a quick wank and meditate, then do it all again for lunch and dinner). but i still came off it with no taper and no noticable withdrawals.

I take 15-30mg of mirtazapine prior to dosing up, works pretty well usually. Have you always been on 45mg? I read that mirtazapine is more sedating at lower doses then it is at higher doses.
