'New' OxyContin meant to deter abuse

EVERETT -- Before Marquise Brown was shot to death in June, he was accused of dealing fake OxyContin pills.

Investigators wondered if the shooter suspected that Brown was trying to pass off a new kind of OxyContin, a reformulated version of the prescription painkiller that hit the market last year. Altering the old pill gives people a faster high, a rush that they don't feel if they swallow the tablet whole.

The new OxyContin is intended to be more tamper-resistant so people can't grind it up for smoking or snorting.

Detectives learned that those involved in the drug deal "tested" the pill by trying to burn it. The test showed that the pills couldn't be smoked, police wrote in court papers.

"The information we're getting from multiple witnesses is that the beef was that the Oxy was bad," Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Craig Matheson said. "The victim ended up with a bullet in his head over it."

It's likely the pills Brown sold were counterfeit OxyContin, or a different drug all together. Police don't know because the drugs were never recovered.

It's still too early to tell, though, what kind of impact the new Oxy formula may have on prescription drug abuse and illegal drug trafficking.

Some say there is the potential to see a decline in OxyContin abuse among young people, who typically start out by using prescription drugs pilfered from their parents' medicine cabinets.

Others wonder if the change in Oxy's formula has hastened a surge in heroin use.

So far, detectives with Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force haven't encountered much of the new formula in their dealings with drug traffickers. They have heard that people have found a way to manipulate the new pills so they can still be abused, but detectives haven't verified those claims.

Mostly they have seen the demand for OxyContin plummet as more people are switching to heroin, said Everett police Lt. Mark St. Clair, a member of the task force.

Last year, police in Snohomish County saw a significant upswing in heroin use, especially among young people. They suspected that the increase was a symptom of the rampant abuse of prescription painkillers, primarily OxyContin.

"In all these years, I've never had anyone tell me that heroin was their gateway drug," St. Clair said.

People get addicted to OxyContin, a synthetic opioid, but because it is expensive and harder to get, they are switching to heroin, which is selling for $20 a gram, St. Clair said. A smokeable form of heroin, known as gunpowder heroin, also has re-emerged. Smoking may make some people more willing to experiment with the drug than if their only option was to inject it, drug experts said.

Abuse of prescription pain medication had skyrocketed in the past decade. A study released in July indicated that misused prescription painkillers had become the second most prevalent illicit drug in the nation. There was a 400 percent increase in treatment for people abusing prescription drugs between 1998 and 2008, according to the national study conducted by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Office of Applied Studies. In 2008, the study said an estimated 500,000 people tried OxyContin for non-medical purposes for the first time.

Statistics in Snohomish County show that people are more likely to die of an accidental overdose than in a vehicle crash. More than 40 percent of the fatal overdoses here were caused by a prescription opioid such as OxyContin.

Washington state lawmakers are making another run at getting pharmaceutical companies to pay for prescription drug take-back programs. A dozen programs operate in the state to provide people with a place to dispose of their unused medications. Police and some lawmakers say the drug companies should be paying for the programs.

Other states also have developed prescription monitoring programs. The National Drug Control Strategy released in May calls for helping states crack down on doctor shopping and pill mills, which hand out drugs willy-nilly. The strategy also urges increased education for doctors who are treating patients with chronic pain.

Meanwhile, Purdue Pharma, which manufactures OxyContin, created the new formula in an attempt to make the tablet more difficult to manipulate. That formula was approved by the Federal Drug Administration in April.

OxyContin is intended to treat patients who require around-the-clock pain control. Its slow-release formula contains a large quantity of oxycodone. Drug abusers learned to tamper with the controlled-release formula by grinding or cutting it up. That allows them to receive a higher dose of oxycodone more quickly than if they swallow the tablet whole. People often smoke or snort OxyContin to get high.

"... grind it up for snorting or smoking"............. the fuck?

also "... switching to heroin, which is selling for $20 a gram" well maybe 2% black tar, but you'd need a gram or two of that to do the same thing 50mg of pure heroin does.

I actually did try smoking OP's (only time I was offered) and it worked amazingly well. The 20/gram thing is just straight up crazy, and "gunpowder heroin"? I know of the mexican powder emerging and the east coast heroin can be smoked without adding caffiene, what exactly are they talking about?

^They dont know what there talking about at all. As you already pointed out haha. God it never ceases to amaze me how stupid and ignorant some people are.

Maybe the dope out here on the east coast "can" be smoked but alotta things CAN be done that dont mean they are effective. I never heard of anybody in my whole 'circle of dopeheads' back when i was using, who smoked that shit. its a huge waste. Basically wat Im sayin is that while it could be smoked, it aint made for smoking, and it aint a normal, common ROA for people who use dope out here to do it that way. its very rare. the people who do that shit, as far as i could ever tell from readin on here, seems to be the stubborn people who just want to smoke it for some reason. so even tho it aint meant to be smoked, aint made for smoking, dont easily burn in a way thats effective, and overall is a waste when you look at the amount you need to use to get a high since its so un-economical, they are just determined that they are gona smoke it so they do it regardless of the ridiculousness of smoking when you can just use it in either one of the "normal" ways that everybody else does, that work a million times better.

I know you used to be around philly , right robatussin? Maybe you smoked it, I dont know, but im just sayin. I do know that the shit dont lend itself well to smokin, and that it aint common at all. I dont know why anybody even says "it can be smoked, sniffed , or injected" when they talk about east coast dope. its like saying methadone pills can be swallowed, sniffed, or injected. Sure people CAN do it either one of the last two ways, but it aint common and dont work better than just swallowin it.

I know that aint quite on topic but i just wanted to point that shit out becuz sayin that east coast dope can be smoked makes it sound like its a regular, common ROA on the same level as sniffin or IV'ing, but it def. aint. And I know you aint no dummy man, you had your time with dope IIRC but I was just sayin for the rest of the folks on here who might not know, who might read that and get the idea that its a good way to do it--it aint. Not unless you got some tar you better off with a needle or snortin that diesel than fuckin around tryna smoke it.

Anyways....how many articles about the 'new formula" of oxycontin is there gonna be? Damn, i feel like i read 15 of them already.

and by the way, i talked to somebody who ate 2 of the new op 80s the other day, and he hadnt touched no opiates in a long time. he got off dope last year and now only uses opiates verrrry occasionally so his tolerance is pretty much back to nothin, and he said he got rocked off em. He said compared to the old Teva football 80's they were just even more gelly and waxy and shit, but nothin like ridiculously over the top impossible. but since the prices on 80s are so low now you can afford to just buy more and eat em. Buy 2 good 80s and sniff em or buy 4 op 80s and eat em for the same price? I think you might as well just get double the dose. IDK tho.

It been so long since i could get even the tiniest little high off oxy that I dont even know wtf im talkin about no more. After years of shootin a couple bundles of dope everyday oxy is a long gone memory. Even after I got off D, a couple 80s wouldnt even touch me, so i really couldnt say how I would feel if I was the one in todays oxy users shoes.

Lacey,

I know what i typed seems far fetched and yeah you are right I am around philly and that is the dope I am referencing. Trust me it took me like 5 years to even consider trying to smoke (and by smoke I mean off foil). It was extremely effective (scrapes had me nodding). The only thing i can think of that might explain why i seemed to be the exception to the rule was maybe a fentanyl spike in the bag? Either way i straight up vaped off of foil and the taste was amazing and it did not seem like a waste at all (I almost preferred it to IV). This is just my experience and like i said it was an isolated incident. I am glad my tolerance is back down to nill....glad you took a break too.

And yeah, saying east coast dope can be smoked is like saying suboxone can be smoked. BY FAR not the normal ROA's unlike tar and other west coast dope

^In all my time, I've only met 1 person who said they've ever smoked NJ dope and this happened like 2 weeks ago lol. Not saying it's stupid or whatever, I guess I'm in the club of people who say shoot or you're wasting it. Smoking just seems like you could have so much of your dope just go poof in a cloud of smoke into the air and not into my body.

I agree but the rush is very pronounced and floored me quite well. If i was still doing heroin all the time i might post a how to smoke #4 well guide....but nah its not that important

Oxy seems much more available and cheap recently in my area. I assume that the decrease in price is due to the fact that they're the OPs, not the OCs.

I have never tried an OP but seen them very many times. and i swear my buddy was like shoving them in my face and im an opiate addict and i had no urge to do it. it just looks......bad.

a dub sack of H gives you 100mg and thats two really good doses if you plug it, i was addicted to it and now im off it but its way cheaper than having to do $30 worth of oxy to get the same high as half a dub sack or in other words a dime bag

Yeah, the new Op's have declined in price tremendously. An 80mg OP in my area goes for $35 where an 80mg OC went for $65 before.

What the fuck? Do they actually think this will accomplish anything?

"Oh... I really wish I had a proper way to dispose of all these extra drugs I have... but since that isn't available, I guess I'll just HAVE to take them, or sell them to somebody."

I've smoked dope bought in Spanish Harlem. It smells like puke when you light it up.

Nobody chases dragons any more huh? I agree that shooting is much better.
