(National) Big Day Out 2011

I wouldn't have paid for tickets this year either.

I'm looking forward to seeing Iggy and the Stooges though to be honest. The last time I say him at a BDO I walked away impressed. Rammstein followed by Tool may wear me out by the end. I plan to get my metal on more so at Soundwave next month.

I'm am also more excited about some of the side acts such as MIA, LCD Sound system and Grinderman.

Yeah I reckon MIA in the boiler room at the end of the night will be rather splendid indeed %)

I've seen Rammstein before so I'm not fussed to catch them this time around. BUT if you haven't seen them before, fucking DO IT because it's certainly an experience.

again i will miss out on seeing LCD since they clash with the main stage, last time it was RATM

My day will look something like this

Little Red > Lupe Fiasco > Gyroscope > Deftones > Birds Of Tokyo > Bloody Beetroots > TOOL

words cant describe how fuckin pissed i am that Tool are not doing a sydney sideshow... its a fuckin joke!!! the only glimmer of hope to come from that is Muse didnt do a sideshow last year and they were back to do their own shows within the year.

I think my day will go a little something like this:

(depending on what time I arrive) Naked & Famous > Children Collide > Dead Letter Circus > Lupe > Deftones > Crystal Castles > Bloody Beetroots > Sia > Tool > MIA

But if I don't get too see all of them I won't mind. My aim this year is to relax and enjoy the day, rather than stress about running around to see whoever.

2for1 thursday deal is mighty temptationingly-ish

if you pay the full price, i bags being your friend that comes for free!!!

i honestly cant see any reason why i would want to go to the 2nd show... im seeing everyone i want to see on the first day...

I am interested to see what Andrew WK does in the Lilly World after he has already played The Green stage. I imagine it isn't playing "Party Hard" on repeat. (Although that would kind be cool)

from the looks of things on setlist.fm tool are doing 10 song sets...

they play Aenima in both of them, so im stoked!!!

cant wait for it to be 35+ on wednesday... why does it always have to be boiling on big day out day in sydney.

Dear. God.

That was an absolutely fantastic festival. Seriously, just so much fun. Lupe's set was killer (he played a Japanese Cartoon song!), Deftones fucking killed me (in the best way possible), Bloody Beetroots were fantastic, Die Antwoord was hilarious amazing, Rammstein put on an absolutely ridiculous show (Fireworks. Inside the stage. Oh yes. And flamethrowers...) [even if I find their music a bit... samey], Grinderman were sludgy as shit, Matt and Kim played a brilliant set...

And that's not even all the acts I saw!

I still haven't bloody slept!

Well I bought 4 tickets to the Sydney Aus day show when I heard they came back on sale about 6 weeks ago. Unfortunately, two of the friends I had in mind to accompany me can't make it, and no-one seems to be interested in buying these on eBay - even below cost! Now i could dig up some other, less musically inspired, friends to attend, but i'd be giving the tickets away to people that don't really appreciate them (and are likely to be a burden thru the day). So if you're after two tickets to Sydney BDO I can help (donations greatly accepted). How do we hook up tho? I'm still greenlighter so can't reply to PM's. PM'ing me your mobile # sounds like asking too much... Any ideas? Would a mod mediate? It's tomorrow!

^ if someone sends a pm to a mod (and asks nicely) they can forward it on to you :)

Gold Coast BDO was amazing! Fantastic day! Great weather, crowd and music. I'm still a bit sore though as we were on our feet from 8:30am onwards... I'd say Rammstein were the highlight for me. I was just too exhausted by the time Tool came on to really appreciate their set, though the visuals & lasers for their act were certainly pretty.

A warning for anyone considering smuggling either drugs or alcohol into any of the upcoming events: you need to strongly consdier whether it is worth the risk and ruining your day. There were 77 people caught with drugs at the Gold Coast event and many more given hefty fines ($400+) and having their tickets revoked for attempting to sneak booze in. I was at the smaller of the two gates for an hour in the morning (before any sniffer dogs were there) and saw numerous people searched by the police & caught with weed and pills. They were doing a thorough job searching pockets, cigarette and gum packets, doing pat downs, and had guys stick their thumbs into their waistband and pull their pants out so they could check inside their underwear too. They may have had female officers checking in bras as well as I know one girl was found with small balloons of vodka in her bra. Trying to smuggle booze inside sunscreen bottles is also a well-known tactic and sure to fail.

In addition be prepared to be turned away at the gates if you're obviously intoxicated when you turn up. When I was there they were telling people to sober up for an hour and come back though which was nice :)

These events can be just as much fun to attend sober or with just a few (overpriced) drinks inside.

first BDO for me... not sure what to expect apart from jumping like a mad man for TOOL and rammstein... Being dragged along by my brother :p

Shame i cant be more... Prepared ;)...:(

As of now, no preperation at all!! Imma be getting on the glucose :) ... And yes, i mean it, Sugar rush all the way.... :p

so its over for another year... 12 years in a row... 12 out of 106 shows...

... but there is still a chance i might go tomorrow if the price is right...

i was the sensible driver..

before we walked in.. there was a dude being chased by the boys in blue the cops were yelling out (tackle him, trip him)... they let go off the labrador... it gave up.. ... but they still got him...

very strong police presence, and dogs... so kids this is my warning.. be very fuckin careful!

i started off by seeing little red... they were great... good sound... rock it went mental as did slow motion...

i jumped about for the next bit till i saw Lupe Fiasco... he was alright, but he didnt really finish any songs... it was all half cock (kick,push/superstar)

I went and saw Gyroscope after that, they did a solid set, and they played Australia because of it being Australia Day..

After that it was in for Deftones... i love the deftones and i know bassist never make the band... but Chi not being there they were missing something... They still played a fuckin amazing set a lot of old shit... (no passenger with MJK) but awesome...

it was getting too hot, so i headed high to the stands for Birds Of Tokyo... typical birds set...

I jumped here there and everything (mostly lily world for reggie watts) until the beetroots started...

I have been to 12 of these things... but fuck did WARP go off... it was mental... it was sweaty/hot/crazy... but... fuck did it reminded me that im nearly 27...

after that i headed straight to the stands for Tool... even though they will still hours away (the sun was still up)

i saw Rammstein from a restricted view (Front Of House) was in my way, i was up in the grandstand... for a bunch of old german blokes... they got the place moving... and i can also appreciate that before this year... back in 2000 they were the most expensive band lees/west has brought out...

... and then there was TooL

they started with Third Eye, and im pretty sure they nearly played all 13 minutes of it.. it was an amazing set, i sat at the top of the grandstand and watched every second. They didnt play stinkfist.. which didnt bother me... coz they did play the pot which i have never heard live.. and they played Aenima... which made me fuckin night...

all in all, im sticking with what i said a few months ago... it is still the only one-day festival in Australia that can provide you with everything... the amount of dance kids, tool freaks and just in general people having a great BDO/Aus Day were awesome...

What a day!!

Die Antwood - OMG!! I thought it was pretty funny watching people bopping away to them even though they swore the whole way through their set (helps having south african friends lol).

Rammstein - loved the fire works!!

Tool - after seeing Alex Grey at Rainbow last weekend seeing Tool last night was almost like having an acid flashback! I could see just how much influence Alex has in their set. Unfortunately, it was a shame the sound quality was pretty bad for them and I could hardly hear the guy sing :(

Awesome, absolutely awesome. Was a bit worried about dogs ruining my day. When I walked past the entrance one of them sniffed right where I (minutes) earlier had an item. I kept looking at the officer and dog and smiled (impossible not to) as I kept walking.
The second one didn't seem to alert much. There were a couple officers enjoying themselves inside the festival - even letting an old guy wearing underwear take pictures with them. Id be afraid to search him.

There was also some model competition at a tent, you have to chose your favourite picture apparently, there's 3 model shots and 3 boxes to tick next to. The girl says tick the one you like best.... So i ticked her hand. I was unsure if she was upset or not. She made me do it again. This time I ticked the background picture.

I went for Tool, but rammstein stole the show. Sound was quality, the bass kick of the drum sent shockwaves throughout the stadium. And their stage show.. I was in hysterics the entire time. Loved tool's opener - third eye. Then let some girls in front by the fence since they were shorties, and it was her sisters first time of seeing Tool. They were really polite. A few drunkards behind boozing into everyone, and screaming, instead of being at the mosh made it a little hard to enjoy at one point.

Tool was pretty stationary. Rammstein wheeled in their drumkit, got out the flame thrower and almost set their drummer alight as he tried to play a flamming drumkit. Then proceeded to smash it with guitars. With loud cheering ensuring from the crowd. The vocals needed to be turned up a bit.

Overall insanely awesome.

Awesome review guys!

I'll be heading there tommorow for the Perth show, im loving what i'm hearing with Rammstein.. i've missed them so many times in the past, sounds like they've really put on a kick-ass show.

Yet to see Tool aswell, can't wait.

Thanks for the heads up, the last Big Day Out i went to was in 2009 i think with Prodigy in Perth, this was the venue some young girl died at after consuming all her drugs at the gate. This happened some time after i had already got through the gates and there were no dogs.

But since that incident, they've come down way to hard for it to be worth the risk.. i had a few good years from 2006 onwards.. but these days i can settle for been sober with a maybe a few drinks and still have a blast!.

Best show i ever went too was Iron Maidens World Tour '08 and i was dead sober, haha.

I dont know whats wrong with me but i dont do drugs anymore or drink so I didnt bother to go even though i love tool and rammstein. something just isnt there at live gigs or dance events anymore that makes me want to stomp and go crazy. sad hey

^ really? It's all about the music! Drugs/alcohol are just a way to further enhance the experience. You don't need to be intoxicated to go nuts in a mosh or dance your arse off in the boiler room :D I don' think I'll stop going to gigs until the day my hearing finally goes.

Yes, same. You shouldn't need drugs to enjoy music. Gigs til I die!

That being said, I'm not going to BDO today :p haha.
