Let's talk about eggs

low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol is affected by high saturated fats, although there is cholestrol in eggs they are not high in saturated fats, so the serum cholestrol is only slightly raised in both hdl and ldl so it makes it more favourable cholestrol when the hdl is raised.

http://www.nutritionandeggs.co.uk/page/e_cholesterol this might help for anyone who wants to know a bit more about the cholestrol in eggs.

but the cholesterol in the eggs dont raise your bad cholesterol really?;)

and the fat in cage free eggs which actually improve your LDL/HDL ratio.

Calm down there son, there is more to the world than meets the eye in one sentence of one thread on the internet ;)
I actually have a pretty good grasp of the concepts of weight loss.
Perhaps I should've worded my post better, but essentially I am talking about replacing meals or ingredients of meals with eggs. For example, as I've stated a few times in Healthy Living recently, I currently have toast or museli for breakfast, i.e. just carbs. What if I were to replace that with a couple of boiled eggs? In fact, this is pretty much exactly what I said in the second line of the NSFW'd part of my OP (although I don't blame you if you didn't read the NSFW text...tl;dr).

Unfortunately for someone like me with such a vast history of eating disorders, counting calories is dangerous territory. I appreciate the mindset that you're coming from but it's not an option for me to get that serious about calorie monitoring again.
ok well have fun with the crapshoot then! GOOD LUCK!!!!:D

^^ I have no idea what you're talking about.

me too but no roosters? I dunno much about it can the hens lay without a rooster? You just wont get fertilized eggs is my understanding (if you got no cock)

Yep, healthy hens will lay an egg pretty much every day, even without a rooster. It's kinda like their menstrual (oestrus) cycle.

how could you possibly hope to monitor your weight gain/loss if you are not monitoring your food consumption? Its YOUR thread you started it with a question about whether eating eggs will help you lose weight (lol). They are just calories (protein and fat) and vitamins/minerals. They must be viewed as part of the bigger daily picture.

To some people, counting calories and monitoring food consumption are vastly different. For me, calorie counting involves checking the nutrition table on the packet of foods, or checking a calorie list for each item of food that you eat, i.e. being obsessive about calories. Like I said, for someone with a history of eating disorders this is a dangerous habit to fall back in to, but I'm not for one second expecting you to understand what that's like. Roughly monitoring food consumption on the other hand is more simple, as an example, "I'm going to have dinner at a restaurant with friends so I'd better just have a salad for lunch to balance out the calorie intake".

This is not just a weight-loss thread, and I am not claiming ownership of this thread. I started this thread as a discussion about eggs in general, and it just so happens that the OP was written by me, and contains specific questions I have relating to the consumption of eggs.

Ah, I was going to suggest calorie tracking websites, but now that I've read this I understand that may not be the best thing (I totally relate to you on this btw, I've had food obsession issues in the past when I was less healthy too). If it helps I'm very tiny and I eat eggs. I weighed a lot more when I ate less protein and more grains and what not, but everyone is different.

In fact, as Damien suggested, I would LOVE to have some chickens just as pets, because they're cute and quirky, with the added bonus of fresh eggs every day. Hmmmm *ponders*

Plus they will eat most of your organic food scraps. :)

I know I should be wary of cholesterol

I don't believe that's true. I don't think eggs will do anything bad to your cholesterol.

My goal one day is to have 5-6 little hen friends. I'll feed them super awesome organic food in exchange for very nutritious eggs. :)

Ok fair enough Neo. I understand your position better.

IMO you are selling yourself short though if you dont think that you can overcome your eating disorder problems and be able to track your caloric intake one day. You can heal from that I am sure you are a strong woman.

Best of strength to you...I am sorry for being blunt. I do know what having eating problems is like though which may surprise you. I have gained 40 pounds of muscle in the past 2 years in large part because I have often become obsessed with taking in nutrients. So I feel you.

hugs <3

n3o, I did not realise you had a problem in the past, if you are wanting to raise protein levels, yes eggs are away to do that, and fairly healthily way of doing so.
what you could do is a list of all the things you want to be able to and can eat. for example instead of just thinking about a boiled egg for breakfast think of it as something you can replace any protien part of your meal, instead of a ham salad you could have a boiled egg with your salad. you might have one for breakfast, it might be at supper time. however this site is brilliant for ingredients you have and suggestions of what you can do which might make it easier for you to see how to replace eggs with what you are currently using still within the healthy diet you have.
www.supercook.com if you put in eggs and say spinach it will give you a variety of recipes that you can make and if you buy one other ingredient you could then make that, might be helpful.

^^that is a pretty big space/time/money investment. especially if you are renting and have to deal with predators.

I think you could make it as big or small as you want with regards to all of those factors. Unless of course you're living in an apartment or something lol.

If you have a good size back yard I don't think it would be too much work maintaining 2-3 chickens.

I hear you on holding off on pets though. I hate pets. :D

Thank you man I really appreciate that.

I'm a bit embarrassed, I didn't really want to bring up eating disorders but it was just illustrating my point....

Anyway! Back on topic... :)

Thank you very much for your feedback hun, and I am actually looking in to getting some chickens right now :D

Who here actually has some chickens??

Matsuo, you should work on your condescending tone in some of your posts, man. I understand you try to help, but just an observation.

Back on topic: Boil some eggs, shove them on wholemeal toast, slice them up, add shedloads of pepper, add another slice and enjoy a fantastically nutritious sandwich.

You should try poached eggs also....

I'm surprised you enjoyed eating the eggs just as is....I quite like eggs, but just some boiled eggs on their own is abit much for me! I kinda hate them, but also like them! It's weird....some days the thought of an egg repulses me, but some days I can't get enough.

I still can't figure out how to keep the yolk runny but the albumen solid when boiling an egg. The only way I get the yolk runny is by compromising a chunk of the albumen which usually hasn't cooked properly.

Any eggsemplary tips for me? 8)

I dunno if there is such a way to boil the egg selectively, if someone knows please share? I want to try poaching eggs sometime :) When I eat hardboiled eggs I like to mush them all up with pepper and catsup, or even honey mustard if adventurous feeling. Omelettes are fantastic because they are one of those dishes where you can throw just about anything in there and it will taste good. I have gotten tired of eggs before, what worked for me was just switching it up all the time.

I'm surprised you enjoyed eating the eggs just as is....
Not as surprised as I was, let me tell you!! Thinking back on it, I must've been really really hungry :D
But I'm looking forward to trying them again, perhaps exactly as you suggested, sliced or mushed up on wholemeal toast with a bit of salt and pepper :)

I still can't figure out how to keep the yolk runny but the albumen solid when boiling an egg.

Runny yolk is definitely something that I'm pretty sure I will NEVER EVER enjoy. Seriously, even the thought of putting runny yolk anywhere near my mouth makes me gag 8o =D

Everyone should get organic eggs if you can afford them. The chickens are allowed to walk around freely and are not fed antibiotics or hormones.
Eggs also contain half of the reccommended choline intake as well as high amounts of omega 3. Most diets (at least in America) have more omega 6 than omega 3. We are now learning that humans should consume more omega 3s than omega 6s.

I find it funny that I used to hate eggs as a kid and always wondered why people ate them. Then, surely enough, I enjoyed eating them when I got older. It's simple, they are full of nutrients.

I am like you Neo, all my life I have hated eggs. Little foetuses have always turned my stomach. However over the years I have forced my self to eat them because, lets face it, in the West it is about the only thing other people will cook at breakfast, and short of being rude, I will usually eat what is put in front of me. The only exception is omelettes.. Mix them up and add a few fresh ingredients and they make a great meal. I don't even consider them eggs after that, more like an ingredient in a cake type situation.

Yeah. Not really stable enough to take on pets at this time. We might not be in here in a year, we still want to take large amounts of time off work to travel in the next 2-3 years. But once we are more settled, having my own chickens are one of my goals. :)

You know if you don't name them they aren't even really pets, you could make a great meal of roast chicken when you leave to travel. (I'm aware you are vego, I'm just yanking your chain ;))
