I think my friend hit an artery (NSFW Pic)

Sorry if I'm meant to somehow forewarn of the pic... I tried my best. It's my frist time posting here. I'm pretty sure my friend hit an artery. I'm having a hell of a time talking him into going to the ER but figured if I post here and can show him how many other people agree with me he may go.

This happened 4 days ago. I wasn't there but he said at first it instantly swelled up and hurt pretty bad. I saw him the day after this happened and his hand was HUGE. He couldn't make a fist. He said this was because of being outside in the cold at work, because after being inside in the warmth he was able to make a fist (although still in pain). The day after that he texted me saying the swelling had gone down. Now, days later I asked him how it was. He said the swelling had gone down but that it still "really fucking hurt". To me it's obvious he needs to go to the hospital. I'm not sure what happened but maybe he hit an artery? He's saying that the spot with discoloration isn't even where he hit when his hand swelled. I don't really understand that...

I've tried telling him that it's not worth losing his hand over, etc etc. I'm just looking for some other people's opinions to show him that I'm not crazy and that this is as serious as I'm making it out to be. He's coming by here in four hours or so and I'm hoping to take him to the ER then ... if I'm able to talk him into it.

He is trying to say he wants to wait two more days and see what happens. WTF?

Tried posting a picture with it.

Have him go to the ER. They have to keep it confidential. Its not like your friend hurt anyone else. He didn't run over anyone with a car or something like that. Doctors have to keep their word and help your friend. I hope your friend gets better. :)

It looks like an abcess, which may have led to a spread of infection to the hand since circulation is often more of a problem at the extremities.

He really need to go to the hospital.

What was he shooting up?

He was shooting heroin. Not black tar or anything, just regular dope.

Take him to a hospital. He won't get into trouble. I had an infected abcess and went to the hospital and I was treated very nicely. I had an overnight stay and was given an IV of morphine that would be released every time I pushed a button and the people treated me like a person. Really nice nurse. I was sent home with a prescription of Vicodin and Lyrica.

Thanks for your reply, K'd OUT. Curious if you were honest about the cause of the abcess. I know it's important to be honest with doctors and that they're just trying to help... just not so sure if my friend will see it that way since he's already pretty freaked out and scared. Any replies are helpful.

Got his permission to post this on here (we both are big fans of Bluelight and the posters here). Going to show him all replies when we gets here and hopefully that will be a big enough force to convince him to go.

Thanks for all you guys being so nice... I know that's not always how it goes.

By the way, he says that when he hit and got the instant swelling it wasn't where the discoloration is. He says it was up by his thumb - where the bruising and swelling is. Not sure if that's an artery or what. The discoloration started when the hand swelled up from the other hit. Has gotten slightly bigger in the days that have gone by but the swelling has gone down significantly. His hand was about three times the size of that originally. Thanks guys.

Injected at the wrist and instant swelling of the thumb (and hand) is textbook artery. They carry blood from your heart to your extremities.

DAAAAAYUUUUM that looks like some Requiem for a dream shit, you besta get that taken care of ASAP suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun..............

Yeah, I was honest about it and they told me "I can see why you came, looks like it hurts, we'll have to get that treated"

That's really lucky. If you went to the local hospital here you'd be lucky to see IV paracetamol, let alone morphine. Such opiophobia here in Britain.

Went to the ER. Keeping him overnight and possibly longer. Giving him a shitload of IV antibiotics and when I left (was told to leave once he got his overnight room since visiting hours were over) they were getting a plastic surgeon to come in. They seemed to think he was going to cut it open and clean it. People were a lot nicer about it than we had thought.

Gave him methadone for withdrawals/pain.

Just thought I'd write this up if anyone was interested.

Thanks to those who replied.

Thanks for the update. Hope it all works out well for your friend. Keep us posted about anything further, so maybe it may help someone in the future.

Thanks Tommy Boy. He got out today and they gave him two antibiotics and tylenol 3 prescriptions. In the hospital overnight they gave him methadone, percocet and finally morphine when nothing else was working. They gave him IV antibiotics overnight but decided to not cut into the abcess because they couldn't see any puss. Seems he got out easy on this one. Everyone was a lot more understanding and nice at the ER than we had imagined. Didn't end up being scary at all. A few lectures on entering a treatment program, but in the nicest way possible and seemed to come from a place of genuine concern and not anger. I'll leave this up in case anyone ever is wondering if they should go or what's going to happen if they do. Thanks again to everyone.
