To all those who study for finals in Barnes N Noble

For me, I need to study in a completely quiet place with no distractions. Even when my house is completely quiet, I can't study there. Too many distractions. I need to go into a closed off room to force myself to study. Hmm ... I actually don't do much studying ... :P lol

Seriously though, I don't know why people would study there. That's a weird place to study. There are lots of libraries and other locations.

Who cares where people study? Were they bothering you in some way, or should all study be done in complete privacy or in a university library?

I don't understand why this irritates you so much.

personally i find it more effective to study after snorting some roxyz or doing a shit load of adderall, setting does not matter

I go to Barnes and Noble just to read for hours at a time and would probably study there if i ever had the need to. I do this because I enjoy reading and i never have the money to purchase books, nor do i have the desire to spend money on a book im only going to read once. I hope that people don't have the same attitude toward me when they see me or think the same things. And secondly, i don't understand why it really makes a difference to you where strangers study. They're studying. Not bothering anyone. Especially you. Im sorry someone minding their own business and doing what they feel they need to do (quietly, i might add) really annoys you THAT much. You must have a lot of time on your hands to be able to critique people that aren't outwardly bothering you at all. Just saying.

it's actually a more effective study tool to study in novel locations.

It's actually more effective to study in the location where you will be taking the exam.

@Heuristic: the theory is that you'll be more likely to pick up the environmental/contextual cues if you study in the same room as you sit the exam - all you have to do is look at the wall and *bam* all that cramming floats back into your head. Worked a treat for me.

Its kinda like the hipsters who write books in starbucks

lol. exactly!

I didn't think this thread would get even a few responses... But, in all honesty, it doesn't piss me off that much. Perhaps I'm angry b/c I work retail and every once in a while you'll get a cocksucker who will ask questions, pretend to be interested in buying shit, and then just leave. I mean shit, I got things to do, coffee to slurp, and cigarettes to smoke. I can't be hassled by customers who enter an establishment, give a little cock tease, and then leave.

that is a cool story, even if i'm not quite sure what it means yet

Two monks were traveling together, an older monk and a younger monk. They noticed a young woman at the edge of a stream, afraid to cross. The older monk picked her up, carried her across the stream and put her down safely on the other side.

The younger monk was astonished, but he didn't say anything until their journey was over. "Why did you carry that woman across the stream? Monks aren't supposed to touch any member of the opposite sex." said the younger monk. The older monk replied "I left her at the edge of the river, are you still carrying her?"

I don't study in Barnes and Noble but I had plenty of friends who do. Also friends use Panera Bread, Starbucks, anywhere with free wi-fi. I liked going to the quiet floors of the library on campus, or studying at home best. The downside of somewhere like Barnes and Noble is, I'm probably downing a TON of caffeine and my bladder is not Superman, I'm gonna have to pee. If I'm in public I can't just leave all my shit and go to the bathroom --- when I come back I'm pretty sure it won't still be there, especially if it's my laptop. When I was younger, or with a group, public places were fine, but when I did the work for my Masters most of it was done at home, or hiding in the library if it was crunch time (I would cover my laptop with my coat if I had to go pee, who knows how effective that actually was, but it never got stolen at least). But yeah, doesn't really bother me where other people do their best studying, whatever works for them :)

Also the story of the two monks was one that I read a while ago and was glad to be reminded of. It especially fits in this thread, but answering the question "why are you still carrying that with you" might be more involved than many people are willing to go.

I agree with OP, pricks imo. Get to the library or just stay home, why have the hassle of people all around you doing shit. Once again fucking pricks

THANK YOU! THANK YOU !

People are not all the same ...For example what bothers you , i could not care less about.
Some people are fortunate to have families/roommates that are understanding , respectful, and yes , quiet. Others are not , and have to rely on libraries, cafes and bookstores.
Libraries are great, but sometimes THE ABSOLUTE SILENCE is disturbing.
I live in the city (new york) and half of the students in the city (or so it seems) , study at Starbucks or B&N.
Me personally? Ive spent days and days studying in various city parks (when its warm , of course )...

There are lots of good reasons to study at barnes and noble: When I'm tired of studying, I like to read the magazines.
I usually fall asleep at home.
There is no coffee at the library, and I don't make coffee. I go there and buy a cup.
And, to flirt with the coffee girl/pick up girls at coffee shops.
