A QUEENSLAND grandmother has credited British adventurer Bear Grylls with saving her life after her car was swept away in raging floodwaters.

Christine McLaren, who has seven grandchildren, was only seconds from death on Sunday when her car was swept away in flood waters, the Bundaberg News Mail reported today

Ms McLaren said despite the urgency of the situation, she remembered instructions she had seen given by survivalist Grylls, who has achieved global fame through his Discovery Channel show, Man vs Wild.
"I remember what that Bear Grylls said to do if your car got in a flood,” she said. “I’d turned the ignition off, but remembered to turn it back on so I could open the back window and crawl out.”

Anyone seen this show on Foxtel?? Is it in Aus yet? Bear was here earlier in the year filming at Hinchinbrook Island...

This woman was lucky, if only more people were careful on the roads...
 
It was on SBS for a while, it's on Foxtel now. I lost interest in it when I found out a lot of it is faked. It still entertains me at work though :p
 
If you can part with about $700 you could have a Bear Knife...

Why would anyone pay $700 for that knife?

I paid $60 US for a Gerber a few years ago and it's about as sharp and strong as a knife can possibly get.

I don't know who would pay $700 for that piece of shit but surely people who actually have that money to waste would know enough to spend less on a better knife.

Bear Grylls' Survival Skills Save Teenager

A teenager who found himself stranded on a US mountain for nine hours at -17C says he survived because of skills he learned from British adventurer Bear Grylls.

Jake Denham, 14, was skiing with his family in Oregon when he lost one of his skis and become separated from them.
As he tried to walk down the mountain he lost his way, leading to a nine-hour ordeal where he had to cope with night-time temperatures falling dramatically.
But as the mercury dropped, the resourceful Jake recalled episodes of former SAS soldier Grylls' reality programmes about how to stay alive.
Jake built a snow cave to shelter in as darkness fell but then decided to try another technique of following ski trails down the mountain.
The teenager said the knowledge came from watching two of his favourite programmes; Man vs. Wild and Survivor Man.
"I love those shows," he said in an interview with ABC News affiliate KOHD-TV.
Jake was reported missing at 5.30pm on New Year's Eve but rescue teams and helicopters were unable to find him in the dense forest.

If you want to read a cool story about Bear Grylls look up the interview in which he explains how he built his own home because he didn't want to live in a 2 bedroom London flat.

The guy is big on setting manageable and achievable goals and then doing them. With that attitude behind you then people can do more than they may have first thought possible

Amen to that brother. Les stroud is deffinately the real deal. I mean, bear grylls has people thinking walking along cliff tops is a good idea. In one episode he even advises the fastest way to civilisation is by swinging over a gully for fucks sake.

The average person watching his show wouldn't have the expertise to be able to pull half the shit off that bear advises they do. Bear grylls is all show and no substance.
 
I think people miss the point with Man vs Wild - Of course it's not real! It's just a nice format to show people tips on staying alive. If they remember even a little something, all the better. Like these articles illustrate.

Well yeah but they lie and say it's real. Like "oh I'm going to stay here for the night" and he goes off to a hotel or "I'll just make a raft all by myself" and the crew had already pre-made it and then taken it apart. I don't have any problem with him going to a hotel or whatever, just don't pretend that you didn't. The BBC were pretty upset about and won't play his shows without a disclaimer in front of them now.
 
Obviously man vs. wild is fake. Did anyone see the show where Bear took Will Ferrell onto a glacier with him? Ferrell was even in character doing his usual halfwit stuff stealing Grylls' chocolate etc.
