New guy with a question about approaching the Dr. about frequent lower back pain.

Hey guys i've been following all and researching on the forums for a while decided to make my first post.

I deal with frequent (2-4 times a week) lower back pain. It's honestly been something i've dealt with for years but i just take my tylenol/aleve throw on a icy hot patch and try to ignore it. I work in a position where i do all the receiving at my job which can sometimes be boxes in excess of 80 lbs that i need to lug around and distribute. It disrupts my sleep frequently and definitely keeps me from doing more than lay on the couch on days when it's really bad.

Basically my question is how should i approach my Dr. about this? I'm finally going to a GP on wednesday for the first time in about 10 years. I'm not looking to come off as some pill hungry fiend here but i would like to be able to get something that will help "as needed" as well as anything i can do regularly to help with it.

Can anyone give me advice on how to approach this with the Dr.? Like i said i don't want to come off as someone merely fishing for drugs. I'd rather go in sounding like an informed individual with an idea of the steps that might be taken.

Finally money is an issue. I'd love to go to a chiropractor but i honestly can't afford the 50 bux per session every week. So anything i can do on my own, or anything covered by my insurance would be great.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Thanks for the help! I'll find out tomorrow what's going to end up happening.

Well the Dr. didn't really want to do much about my back pain. He said i'd need to get an xray to check it out but then only recommended physical therapy 4x's a week which isn't something i can afford even with my insurance. So for the mean time a friend hooked me up with some of his extra tramadol which seems to work pretty good compared to tylenol and an icy hot patch.

So i guess it's something i'm going to have to approach him about again next time i go back in 2 months to get my blood work looked at.

Tell your Doc that you are in pain. That you need medication to relieve the pain and that you want oxycontin or you will settle for Vicodin. If he gives you any shit just tell him that you have every moral right to do what you want to YOUR body. He and the state are not your parents. He will understand.:\

I get numerous medications by saying " i've tried a lot of over the counter medications (tylenol, aleve, etc) and nothing has worked." Tramadol is not considered a narcotic so they'll give that out much easier than say vicodin.

tell him what hurts, how much you feel it, and how it disrupts your everyday life! you'll get what he thinks you need....after that if you need something stronger you tell em it ain't a workin!

What kind of advice is that? If you go straight up telling him you want OxyContin your immediately going to get the look from the doctor that means "your a drug seeker". After all, if you ask for an opiate, your seeking drugs.

if it is a true lower back issue they will try an nsaid first...prolly mortin 800

they gave me tramadol at first and i said fuck that noise

but for real motrin 800 saved my back while i went to physical therapy

A - Try going to a chiropractor at least once. Your doctor will probably suggest this anyway, and it could very well help a LOT even from one appointment.

B - Don't get too smart. The more you know, especially about pain medication, the more you will look like a drug seeker.

C - Don't Lie. The more you lie the more you run the risk of tripping over one of your lies and losing the opportunity to get ANYTHING prescribed. Tell the truth, and if you really need medication you will get it.
