severe headaches

WOW, thanks for all the replies.

I had a MRI 2 weeks ago and I'm assuming my doctor would have called me if there was a mass detected.

I will look into the fioricet, I am mostly worried about being turned away with something that does not help and having to wait weeks or months for another appointment.

Its a pain in the ass for me to see my doctor, I live in another city for school and none of the walk in clinics here will prescribe anything stronger then extra strength Tylenol due to problems with abuse of narcotics + being a university town. (I live in Canada) so since its such a hassle to see my doctor I just want to have all my ducks in a row in regards to getting this dealt with.

Fioricet w/ Codeine would be a good drug to help with your migraines. Its a barbiturate combined with caffeine, acetaminophen and with well, codeine.

Floricet w/Codeine, i can see that being effective with the exception of the caffeine. i know its supposed to help the acetaminophen but caffeine also antagonizes the effects of the barbiturate.

i think they should leave out the caffeine.

better yet, they sould leave out the caffeine and acetaminophen, switch the codeine for oxycodone, and switch the butalbital for secobarbital. and then make it OTC. ;):D

Yeah, forget your headache with Seconal with Codeine!

There is a reason the caffeine is in fioricet (besides the obvious one, to reduce the effects of the barbs). Caffeine is also a very effective anti-headache drug in itself.

A little update for those interested

I talked to my doctor and my MRI showed a small spot on my cerebellum, but its not exerting any pressure or mass effect so the radiologist says its within normal limits and nothing to worry about. my doctor and the radiologist both agreed its unrelated to my migraines. they suggest booking another MRI with contrast in 6 months to make sure its nothing.

I got scripts for:
codeine 30mgs x60
fiorinal #3- aspirin, caffeine 40mg, butalbital 50mgs, codeine 30mgs x30
diazepam 5mgs x30
hydroxyzine 10mgs x30

I haven't tried the fiorinal yet but I hope its alright.

I took a Valium for a test drive and 5mg seems kinda low but it was still relaxing. I do not intend to take the diazepam regularly, just wanted it in case.

Are the risks of aspirin the same as APAP? I understand aspirin can be hard on your stomach?

I am glad you got a MRI. I hope everything comes back to be okay.

As far as aspirin goes, you should take it after eating. Same with ibuprofen. It's harsh on your stomach but this could help you.

I am not 100% but I am sure someone here will know if you can CWE aspirin out. But right now I would take your meds as prescribed so hopefully you can get some relief. Good luck!! Once again I hope everything comes back okay in your second MRI!

The caffeine is in there because it helps with headaches. It makes it more effective medication for headaches. Not in there to prevent abuse.

He gave you two medications with Codeine? That's cool. Are you supposed to take them all at the same time? 5mg of Valium is a pretty low dose but oh well.

He said it was fine to take them together, I wanted to try the hydroxyzine due to what I have read about it being able to increase the pain killing ability of opiates. He just said to take no more then 6 a day for the butalbital and use the others as needed.

It was allot easier to get prescribed what I was interested in then I thought It would be, I suppose me not asking for anything harder then codeine helps, lol.

I used to get cluster headaches when i was really young ( like 6-10 years old ) and nothing the docters ever gave me helped them, I used to have to get catscans done all the time and they could never figure it out.. Thank god they went away as I got older.

But from what I've read the only real relief medicine for them is Lsd or Psylocibin.

Opiates will only make it worse too.. :p

Yea, sadly opiates cause rebound headaches. They work for some headaches and not for others.
