I was wondering if there are any non-stimulat or less stimulating ADHD medications that actually work. I have all the symptoms of ADHD, "zoning out" while people are talking to me, severe procrastination, very short attention span, get extremely bored with long task. I have NEVER been able completely read and entire book in my 22 years of life :p.

It is extremely hard for me to get motivated to study, pay attention to my professors, read chapters assigned, and i always procrastinate til the last minute to complete the assignments. BUT give me a physical task to do which requires little thought and I will roll through it with no problem.

I was born without a pulmonary artery, and I had a talk with my doctor, who told me he had quite a few patients who are on medication for ADHD, but that was as far as the conversation got.

Since then I have been taking small doses of Adderall (10-15mg) or vyvanse (30mg) the day before exams or due assignment and this has really helped in improviong my grades and ability to get through the boring studying. This is the only time I take anything for my ADHD.

I know it isn't smart to take stims with a heart condition, but I do a stress test every year and according to the Drs, i do better than 99% of people with my condition and better than 75% of people with a completely normal heart, so I am in really good shape considering my condition.

So, are there any recomendations for Non-Stimulant ADHD medications that actually work?

Thanks.

since ADHD is due to low dopamine levels, the only effective treatments are going to be drugs that increase dopamine levels which are stimulants.

don't get pulled into that Strattera crap either, it does not do jack shit for attention disorders and has a bunch of side effects. it acts as an SNRI and doesn't even affect dopamine(which is involved in ADHD).

a DNRI like bupropion may be of some limited benefit.

Norepinepherine is also involved in ADHD, so strattera may work, as may effexor or cymbalta.

But the end of day, its probably going to methylphenidate or amphetamine that treats it to significant effect.

Eat a lortab, I'm ADHD and it works for me better than anything.. Cymbalta will destroy your stomach, Strattera is a waste of money, DO NOT EVER take methylphenidate, the comedown is terrible and if you'll become extremely dependant, there's a reason they call it Diet Coke..

And there are other drugs out there that increase dopamine levels without having a stimulative side effect such as the 3rd word in my first sentence, try it and you wont be disappointed.. Only problem is you're not going to be able to get a script for them so you're gonna have to find them on the street.

Also, bupropion does nothing at all.. and last but not least STAY.AWAY.FROM.SSRI's unless you wanna feel like a corpse.

Vitamin B12. It promotes heart health and provides energy. I would suggest you talk to your dr about it first, but I would give it a try. I give myself injections once a month. Good luck!

Can't take opiates. I used to take them to study and work, but then I became addicted, but now I am off of them.
