AUSTRALIAN Sex Party candidates will smoke marijuana on the steps of the State Library today as the party launches its drug policy.
Legalised pot could give Victoria decent public transport, the party says.

The protest will take place at the State Library at 4.20pm this afternoon, the Herald Sun reports.

Sex Party president Fiona Patten said this week's record cannabis raids was proof that prohibition did not work.

Ms Patten, who is a candidate for the Northern Metropolitan region in the Upper House, said Victoria should become the first state to legalise "medical marijuana".

She said California's medical marijuana industry raked in $100 million for that state’s government in 2008.

"Victoria could afford a decent public transport system on cannabis revenues," Ms Patten said.

The party also wants legalised heroin injecting rooms introduced in Victoria.

“Senior judges like Ken Crispin QC have stated categorically that drug use has exploded as a direct result of this combative war waged by the state against people who use drugs,” Ms Patten said.

”Drugs like heroin and cocaine are now cheaper and more easily available than they were before this phoney war was started.

“Around the world the inescapable evidence is that those countries who prosecute personal possession of drugs the most, have the highest rates of usage”.

Ms Patten said the use of tobacco was declining because it was legal and could therefore be incorporated into government heath care programs and advertising.

Whilst I like the idea of trying to make a stand against prohabition, ultimately I just don't think this is a smart move for the sex party. It's hard to take a party seriously when this is how they act, seems more like teenagers rebelling to get what they want rather then a smarter approach.

Be interesting to see if this goes ahead and how it plays out.

australia has a sex party? wtf... we need a sex party! sex party on weed? that sounds completely legit. go australia. you rock!

I was chatting to a reporter about this one earlier. Funny how it received almost no attention at the time. Just shows how controlled the media is...

As childish an act as this may be, all their points are valid. I don't believe the party members were toking up either.

This recently busted Asian drug ring making some $400 million profit from cannabis, is only doing so because it is illegal and black market drugs can fetch such a high price. These profits can then be used to buy and import drugs such as heroin. They are only a small part of a massive underground cannabis producing system who's profits are more than double that of the Australian wine industry.

Drug use can't be stopped so it's time that governments started making the money and not crime syndicates.

The profits wouldn't only lead to a better public transport system...

Unfortunately because the Herald Sun is what it is... no one bothered to actually read the media release. The Sex Party candidates weren't the ones getting high...

The Australian Sex Party will launch its drug policies for the Victorian state election on Thursday 25th Nov at 4pm outside the State Library on Swanston st. The party chose the time and venue to coincide with the international ‘4.20’ drug protest rally - an event organised entirely on social media networks.

^^ Just as I suspected

I wouldn't say they read the release wrong. The article is purposely written to discredit the Australian Sex Party. The Herald Sun has to satisfy it's owners, not you or I.

Yes, of course. Gotta love a good scandal. Though weirdly enough they had a massive Sex Party feature on page 2 last week. They knew no one would bother to go to the source... instead they'd get outraged that candidates were getting high (on the job, too!).

I guess it's good that we actually have politicians trying for better drug laws and reform. I'd love to see a national smoke pot in public day held annually to protest against the rediculous drug laws we have in Australia. What would the cops do if 5 to 10 thousand people congregated in a park and all started blazing up???? Fuck all.

Hack had a report on itlast night, along with a 30 minute segment on the issue. It's amazing to hear how much excitement is actually backing the whole thing. I think there is a podcast of it but I'm o my phone so it's too muc effort to find it.

Love your work. FYI I'm no squire, I'm a meager peasent :) it's a damn good listen and good on the hack team for presenting an unbiased story. A pitty they're playing shithouse music these days though
