Post-Punk

Killing Joke

<3

I know I love them! =D

I love the Strokes, Libertines, and the Horrors to no end, but I don't think that you can call them post-punk or anything like it (post-rock, prog-rock)

they for sure follow that verse-chorus formula, and to great results I might add

Yea. Maybe post-punk revival is not really post-punk, it's kinda like a throwback to the sound of post-punk, which means it's less experimental when done in this day and age, and so not post-punk. sheesh, the more I think about genres the more confusing they become.

Anyway. Cool bands regardless of genre labels. :)

Hi. I love post punk music.... starting with Fugazi the D.C. scene and beyond. I'm certainly a crust punk, but I have a very weak spot for bands like Modest Mouse (mainly older MM) and other things more experimental. Even new Radiohead must be considered post punk. But no, you are not alone.

From Wiki's list I like:
NSFW:
Bauhaus
SOME Clan of Xymox
what Coil I've heard
Cocteau Twins for sure <3
The Cure
The Creatures
Dead Can Dance
Some Eurythmics
Some Echo and the Bunnymen
What I've heard of Front 242
Joy Division
What I've heard of KUKL
Legendary Pink Dots
New Order
The Normal
The Psychedelic Furs
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Where is NitzerEbb on this list?

I'm surprised by a number of those being listed there-
Many of my choices are Goth/New Wave really.........
And I like a number listed under the influenced by......
Honestly- I've never even thought of Post Punk as a genre :)
Who knew!

Not me..........

Some very cool clips courtesy of tribal girl - cheers!

A few post-punk bands I love who haven’t been mentioned:

Magazine
The Birthday Party
Cabaret Voltaire
Pere Ubu
Wire

Of those already mentioned I dig:

Gang of Four
Television
Joy Division
Public Image Ltd
The Fall

I dig a few others mentioned, e.g. Cocteau Twins, but wouldn’t have thought to classify them as post-punk. Quite a lot of those listed on Wiki are more new wave imho. I would never have thought of the likes of Laurie Anderson or Yello as post-punk either.

^Thanks, this thread was startin' to go in a completely different direction for a minute. :)

I've only heard Pink Flag by Wire, and only play it once in a while. I only really bought it cuz they heavily influenced Elastica's first album. I always like to see what inspires the people I appreciate. :)

Anyways, how about Orange Juice?. I still haven't bothered to get anything of theirs, but I reckon I probably should. I've always liked the sound of them. :)

Orange Juice - Falling And Laughing

Yeah, I've always meant to properly check out Orange Juice too. I like 'Falling and Laughing'. They sound almost like an optimistic Smiths or something.

There were out-of-court settlements involving Wire and The Stranglers following the release of Elastica's debut. Wore their influences a bit too much on their sleeves, Elastica, but it was still a good album. Can't say I've played it much lately, though. Saw them live a couple of times and they were pretty good.

Wire's first three albums, Pink Flag, Chairs Missing and 154 are all essential.

I listened to Pink Flag a couple of times, I don't think I "got" it yet (as it's sort of considered to be one of the great albums).

But I liked their second album, Chairs Missing, from the very first listen. It's quite different to their first.

Yeah, Pink Flag takes a few listens to appreciate imo. Chairs Missing is less angular, a little more accessible - their pop sensibility beginning to emerge.

there is a John Frusciante album called 'To Record Only Water For Ten Days' that I absolutely adore and it was very much influenced by post-punk.

Huh, yeah they do kinda. :D

Oh shit, I only just realised the singer's Edwyn Collins!. I remember how I loathed that song of his which came out when I was in my teens. This'un.

Edwyn Collins - A Girl Like You

Actually, it's not as bad as I remembered it. But t'is still not my cuppa tea.

Ah, you should definitely give it another listen pronto. T'is one of my all time favourite albums. And you're so lucky to have seen them live. Which years?. Unfortunately I seemed to have missed out completely on that one. Even during their reunion. :|

Also, I really love this performance. T'was never one of my favourite tracks from the album. But the guitar playing is awesome, particularly how it replicates car noise. :D

Elastica - Car Song (Live at Jools Holland '94)

Their second album is good too, though not on the same level as the first of course. It took me a long time to get into it. But I think now that I'm older I can listen to it without the urge to press skip every other song. I don't really have that sense of urgency any more. =D

Yeah, I'm kinda in limbo on it too. I like a lot a things about it, but it doesn't flow right for me. I have a few issues regarding albums which usually throw me off right away. Example: anything which has over 14 songs on it, or a well written album which lacks decent production.

I love post-punk music. I hear it on the radio a lot at times.

Really?. What stations are they?. I don't really listen to the radio any more on account of all the rubbish being played. :\

Yeah, I was going to mention that Edwyn Collins song in relation to OJ, but then figured it wasn't really worth mentioning. ;)

I would've seen Elastica twice in early '96 in Melbourne. I'll give the first album a listen for old time's sake. Though I'd say I find the vast majority of the 'Britpop' era stuff grates on me these days. Partly from over-exposure at the time, maybe. Having said that, I'm guessing the Elastica album has aged better than most. I'll report back. ;)

But I reckon you should persevere with Pink Flag. The fact that many of the tracks are just under or just over a minute long may be a bit disconcerting in terms of the flow of the album, I'll grant you that. So a lot of the songs end before you can really get into their groove. But odd as it seems, I find this is part of the appeal. But then there are the longer tracks: classics like 'Reuters', 'Ex Lion Tamer', 'Lowdown' and the sheer howl of the title track. %)

Oh yeah, I'm in total agreement as far as most Britpop goes. The majority of it doesn't really hold up too well nowadays. But I think you'll find Elastica's album still sounds pretty fresh, and lacks the cringe worthy feelings you get when you listen to bands like Sleeper (particularly their first album Smart).

Having said that, I'll happily listen to Echobelly's first two as well. I think Morrissey once stated they were his favourite band. I wonder if that statement still stands 15 years on?. :D

I'll stick with Pink Flag for sure. I often revisit it. It's just not the kinda thing I feel the urge to listen to over and over again. There are definitely some awesome tracks on there though.

Just to keep things slightly related and on track, here's a live performance from Elastica doing Connection, followed by 12XU. :)

saw Interpol on acid. probably the best experience of my life thus far.

anyways, yes post-punk ftw. some favorites

Joy Division/New Order (duh)
The Fall (never met anybody in the USA who's heard of them)
Television (do they count?)
Talking Heads
Echo and the Bunnymen
Bauhaus
Interpol (even though they're derivative, they're honestly fantastic)

Yea I hate it when albums are really long.
