From first hand experience I would agree with you p_d.

I am in a fairly high risk category for heart disease and have severe anxiety. Mine predominantly displays itself in cardiovascular symptoms ie heart palpitations. Combine those 2 with a stimulant and I can feel my heart rate jumping dangerously high. Even friends have expressed concern upon feeling my rate.

On the same subject I find benzo's do not really take anxiety away but more mask the symptoms and then again will increase problems with long term use. I tried Pregabalin yesterday and would have to say it is amazing for anxiety. I spent my first anxiety free day in I don't know how long. I am going to talk to my doctor about getting a prescription and suggest any one else with anxiety do the same. (It isn't on the PBS however)

Depends entirely on underlying conditions.

I agree. Sorry p_d, I wasn't trying to argue against what you were saying, re: heart patients with anxiety disorders being at a high risk. That makes complete sense.

My post was more directed to the majority of anxiety sufferers without underlying heart/cardiovascular conditions, who may have read that, and then if a potential panic attack was had in the future, might start freaking out thinking they are going to have a heart attack, just prolonging/intensifying the panic attack itself. I say that because anxiety and panic etc can cause one to think irrationally.

I'm not sure about panic attacks but benzos are not a good prescription to take for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (which is like chronic anxiety). We all know the pitfalls of tolerance, and addiction, but long term use of benzos can also increase the severity of anxiety. For GAD SSRIs may be a better option (but they do carry risks).

For panic disorder, psychotherapy is very successful and allows the sufferer to be given techniques to deal with a panic attack and avoid them.

i recommend the OP be given a referal from a GP to a psychologist so they can begin psychotherapy. its a much safer option than medication.

Thanks for all the replies...
Went to see my Psychologist yesterday, ended up with a script to Ativan, had a look apart from takes longer to start working looks like the same thing more or less.

Obviously she said it's only for those really bad days....

I find benzo's do relieve anxiety but only in a distracting way, I have always been able to still feel it underneath.

I am on Mirtazapine (TeCA) and noticed no change in my anxiety whatsoever over 2 months. And that works similar to a SSRI.

Have started psychotherapy and is helping my depression but not my anxiety so far.

Pregabalin completely took it away and I could even have a coffee or cigarette without getting anxiety. Coffee nearly gives me panic attacks under normal circumstances.

there is a saying amongst long time users (I don't like th word junkie as it's shit using this for word for humans)...the saying goes:

" Give me a heroin withdrawal any day over a valium withdrawal "

The emptiness and anxiety a benzo withdrawal can give you is incomprehensible. Imagine the complete absence of feeling - i.e. you can theoretically see hear and feel - but you do not - nothing - thats benzo withdrawal. And it can kill you whereas this is unlikely with opioids (in relatively healthy addicts)

If you take them, use them infrequently.....try using some mild opioids instead on occasions, chamomille tea, exercise, alcohol, or go for a swim.....mixing all of this shit up is probably the best combo. I don't believe in drug free living, a mix is best.....you can handle the anxiety that way. And also, when you get the panic attacks, it can help imagining that you are willing and ready to die - if you concquer fear of death your anxiety issues will also become better or even disappear. Worked for me - just tell yourself. "I am willing to die now."

I am glad you have mentioned this, not many people or doctors themselves are aware this, especially the difference between opioids and benzo's. You must be a old skool guy eh?

Your panic attacks theory works for me :)

was happy i could help - not that old school but my first H experience was with 15 (a long time ago now).....no idea how one could get addicted to it that easily, but Valium +anxiety issues = disaster. It's not even an addiction anymore - it becomes a complete mental vacuum.

You'll be fine dude. All the best.

Swear to "god" my doc told me to drink with the xanax..

first visit as well..

^
Did he say something along the lines of "yes, you can still enjoy a drink, try to stick to light beer and drink slowly"... or did he literally say "get as boozed as you like"? Or something more inbetween?

The first scenario I can see a doctor saying, but the latter I can't unless they're a fucking terrible doctor lol.

Having abused Xanax on and off for the past 5 years, and having used it heavily over the past 2, i can't agree in saying that its worse than opiod addiction because i've never experienced this. However i can say that it is a living fucking hell. I didn't get more than 4 hours sleep a night for about a month after stopping my use, and im the sort of person that NEEDS 8 hours a night. It nearly destroyed me.

As i said in an earlier post in this thread, in the long run it actually creates the anxiety that it was made to eliminate.

I love it so much when im on it, hence why im still fighting the addiction. Haven't had any for abut 4 months but the cravings haven't eased a bit. Unfortunately the only reason i haven't had any is because i can't get them at the moment, not because i've got the willpower to say no.

He basically said "Ok ok.. so try and have a few drinks when you have this as well. It can sometimes help make it work better."

"so i should experiment?"

"YES! Experimentation is the best thing.."

No shit.

Either way... i'm going back to see him in a week or 2 with more flights and i imagine he will oblige me again hopefully.

Thats weird man. Doubt he was an intelligent doctor recommending booze with xanax. It will def potentiate it but mixing alot of downers at once isnt the safest (i know i know look whos talking) LOOL but yea just surprised he mentioned that.

drinking with xanax will cause awsome epic blackouts (sarcasm) It should not ever have been reconmended by a doctor lol....

12mg and half a bottle of Vodka will cause you to lose 3 days, if that's your thing.

faaaaaaaaaark that

relax mo fo's

he wasn't saying get hammerred god damn it

just said have a drink or 3 and see how you go!!!

lol

Hey Luude, I have a family member who initially started taking xanax for anxiety, and over 10 or 15 yrs it became a full on addiction, and has ended up being what you said, needed for sleep.

Without xanax they wont sleep properly and will complain about all sorts of shit and say they wont to use it again so they can get 8+ hrs of sleep a night and not feel like crap all day from being so tired.

It's been a month or so, and so far so good, but my question to you is, is there any things that can help that you know of to get off and stay off xanax? Possibly another sleeping tablet that isn't so addictive? Or something to help sleep that isnt pharmaceutical? Any advice from anyone on here is welcomed,

thanks.

^ perhaps some Z drugs,

Zopiclone (imovane)
Zolpidem (stilnox)

They go alright for sleep - and are used as an alternative to benzos for sleep, supposedly non-addictive.

If one likes delusional trips - these drugs can cause those - or strange behavior (sleep walking etc). I suggest Zopiclone though, it gets me to sleep real well, with minimal side-effects. Though I will admit, i did trip the first time i took it.
