Alright fellows, this may sound a bit unethical or something, but its a special story to me. I will say that I don't do this anymore and it was a long time ago. I'll set the setting.
In between my first and second wife, 15 years back, I had a lonely stage and had two dogs and one cat. I increased my psychedelic usage (mainly LSD and mushrooms with occasional mescaline and always pot). The dogs were a small dachshund and a golden retriever mix. I'd trip and find that the animals would actually sometimes sit together (the cat was good friends with the dogs) and watch me, very strangely.
One time a half hour after I took 4 strong hits, and it was kicking in pretty strong after a blunt, I had a flash of a bit of psychotic thinking (meaning that what I thought I don't believe to be true now), I thought the pets (the dachshund sitting next to me on the couch, the dog on the rug in front of me paying close attention to me, and the cat next to him) were showing interest because they want to trip. I gave the dachshund (D) 1/2 hit, the golden retriever (G) 1&1/2 hit, and the cat (C) 1/4th hit, after slapping some ham around it.
The pets first acted as they usually do when I trip, although I was giving them more attention, thinking of them as spiritual friends sharing a journey with me. An hour later is when things changed. I was peaking, and felt very lucid although a bit out of my normal "shell", when D lets out a slow soft whine and looks into my eyes. She looked a bit scared. I comforted her best I could, and she seemed to calm but also very alert, staring at the clear sliding door, looking outside into the dark and sometimes not shifting her gaze for minutes at a time. The next to follow was C, who began meowing. I gave him a can of cat food which he took only a bite of and then walked back the hall, where he stayed most of the trip. G began to look nervous then bark towards the door. I calmed him down and he wagged his tail very rapidly and had a clear grin on his face, I don't know if it was exaggerated because of me tripping or him tripping, but it was huge and humanlike. D and G participated very speedy in some fetch/retrieve of a rope toy and a rawhide.
A few more bits and pieces, I'd check on C occasionally, where he would be either batting at his toy in the hall or looking at something with alert eyes. Twice I brought him back out with the rest of us in the living room but he'd always return to the dim hall. D wanted to stay close to me the whole time but didn't whine at all, she seemed to "understand", and would sometimes look into my eyes more deeply than ever before.
This worked out so well that I did it once more, same doses (but with different paper, maybe slightly stronger but couldn't tell cause of tolerance). This time there was some complaining, among C, and G (who scared me) especially. G got mean at one point and growled at me and wouldn't play for about an hour during what I think was his peak. I had to take C and D into another room and close the door, and G scratched at the door and growled! D seemed to have a good trip mostly however, except getting nervous about C and G. She sometimes crawled up on my lap and stared at me, as if "well what am I supposed to do?" C kept meowing and erratically batting his paws in the air as if being shocked during his peak. When he calmed down he jumped up in bed and batted at D some, who crawled to the other side of me, avoiding him.
I would never do it again, and regret the second set of doses because it may have been stronger than I thought. I feel that maybe they were smarter after this experience, they always seemed like it to me anyways, and definitely responded differently to different music, hopefully giving them appreciation of music. I'm fairly certain they didn't have long term effects, because they were back to normal before I was done tripping even (usually it took 5 or 6 hours and I could tell by their pupils and actions).
These animals are gone, but I hope that what I did for them was positive. I think the first time certainly was, as they seemed alert but also connected and playful.
Anyone else ever done this with their pets? I recommend against it, but if you try, start at the lowest possible dose.
