Have you ever used street drugs to self medicate for pain?

Have any of you ever resorted to street drugs to treat chronic pain that was not being treated sufficiently by your doctor?

How did that work out for you? How did you go about it?

Yes. I illicitly obtained oxycodone to deal with my arthritis pain, and ended up addicted and in rehab several times.

I had my arm almost caught off in a car wreck. The Dr. was superb at surgery but lousy at pain management. I got 30 hydros. It wasn't nearly enough so I ordered a box of pods to help. I was careful about not doing them to long due to prior experience with WD's, and I had no problems getting off the pods.

yes

edit..... also i am sure a lot of us have used many different substances to hide or control mental pain......

To date the worst I've done in this regard is get prescription pain meds off other people and boost their effects with alcohol. Only ever for a few days at a time as the pain hasn't persisted long enough to bother going to the doctor to get my own prescription while feeling like shit.

Having spent a significant amount of time around terminally ill people with inadequately controlled pain, I'd have no problem whatsoever in using illegal drugs to control my pain in that situation. I don't see anything at all noble or heroic about spending your last months on the planet suffering unnecessarily and I'll take pain control over lucidity any day in that situation (I don't see any special value in remaining lucid enough to experience a distressing death, either).

Yeah. Ended up climbing the ladder to deal with back pain, eventually landing on IV heroin. And i ended up contracting Hep C. Now im gonna have to deal with some shitty treatment to reverse that fuckup.

It doesnt sound ideal, but my pain meds are not sufficient and I am tempted to supplement unless my doc agrees to give me a dose that treats my pain.

I'm sure loads of people buy weed to help cope with pain. My mum used to get hash for pain in her limbs during cold weather. She was anti-smoking though, so she used to make these gorgeous little chocolate fairy cakes. The smell when they were baking was amazing..

Well, not a street drug, but I use pods to supplement the pathetic script my doctor gives me for chronic pain. I have used the pods for 3 plus years now, in addition to my scripted medication, and besides the extra cost, it has worked perfectly so far. I do use a combination of drugs to reduce chance of tolerance, of course.

I kind of do this to treat the low-level pain I experience on a daily basis, though I don't know the exact cause. I use poppy tea once daily for this and various other reasons.

I've used marijuana, hydrocodone and other opiates to treat my severe menstrual cramps on multiple occasions, as I can't get an ounce of help from docs. SSRIs are all I'm ever been offered besides a suspicious look and prompt brush-off, even by female docs.

As for how it all worked out, I guess pretty well even though I'd be considered an addict by most standards.

Yeah, I initially got into opiates because of chronic back pain, at first OTC codeine pills, then CWEing the codeine, then after 7 or 8 months started buying meds from other people (mostly oxy/fentanyl).

It was a stupid decision in retrospect. My inability to obtain a consistent supply meant I'd binge in times of plenty, then be stuck in w/d for a few days feeling like ass, and then have to use other drugs (primarily meth) in between.

Now 2 years later I've finally started chasing up a diagnosis and proper treatment now that my opiate supplies have dried up, but I'm still working my way through doctor's appointments/referrals (2.5 month wait to see a rheumatologist? bit fucked up)/the last few non-drug treatments left, all shit I should have done 2 years ago instead of just ignoring the problem and self medicating. And if I 'do' get prescribed opiates, it's unlikely to be anything strong enough to work over my tolerance from 2 years of regular codeine/oxy/fentanyl use, so I'm kind of fucked either way :\

So yeah, speaking personally, I wouldn't recommend it, but your situation might be totally different to mine.

SSRI's are a joke imo & make most people worse. Most doctors dont care how you're feeling & how it impacts your standard of life, they just want you in & out of their office so they can cash the check from your insurance company.

My pain is not minor. Gallbladder attacks (Not stones, but inflammatory closing of the duct is actually MORE painful than typical gallbladder attacks) and Pancreatitis are more painful than childbirth.....so just imagine giving birth to triplets 3 times a day, only Im a dude and the pain never gets better, and its in my mid gut rather than down there. Fracturing my shin didnt hurt nearly as bad as what I feel constantly. I would describe my pain as Agony, not minor discomfort.

The problem is I LOOK just fine. Somebody with screws in their back has something to point to. I dont. Just my word and my specialists opinion.

At least my specialist knows that what I have can be painful. Everyone else is a skeptic, including my GPs.

If I didnt have a good specialist vouching for me I would be SOL....but will I get the increase I need?

Another option is switching to Methadone, which seemed to help the pain better than Morphine. I have heard its a bitch to get off of, and bad for my liver....another med I use also typically causes liver failure. I think docs are filled with pro-methadone propaganda though, mostly because its cheap and not because its better. They disregard claims that its harder to ween off of. I might get better pain relief though.

I would like to try Opana, Oxymorphone.....My GP does not know much about it though. He says I would need to get it from a pain specialist.

Why not just have your gall bladder removed? I had mine removed after I had a gall stone nearly the size of the gall bladder itself, and was also causing problems with my pancreas. I feel 100% better since the surgery, no more discomfort. But I can empathize with your pain, my gall bladder attacks were the most painful thing I have ever been through in my life, even more so than being put into traction while awake and hip surgery combined.

Because I dont have any stones and my condition is not nearly as cut and dry. I have a mechanical disorder and an inflammatory disorder that likely caused it. We dont know if its a problem in the sphincter of odi or the gallbladder itself.

If the problem is in the sphincter of odi and I get my gallbladder out, my pain will be worse, for the rest of my life. They probably wont care and want to ween me off drugs anyway.

However, I might end up getting it out anyway. I was quoted only a 60% chance of improvement.
