Stimulants Amphetamine from benzaldehyde/nitroethane synthesis

I just read the synthesis using benzaldehyde/nitroethane to P2NP and then using al amalgamate to reduce it to amphetamine. Would using P2NP directly and sodium cyanoborohydride order to avoid the aluminum method in order to avoid using mercury be possible?
 
Not sure whether it's a potent enough reducing agent (LAH would of course do it, but who wants to work with that?!)... but we don't allow synthesis questions here anyway, so, please take this question somewhere else.

Why the hell would you bother cooking amphetamine from scratch through a multi-step with hard to get reagents, when there are synths so much easier for the much-stronger and more highly sought after methamphetamine? Unless you're shooting for a substituted amphetamine...

Its just a theoretical question, im interested in the theoretical applications of it not in the consumption aspects of it.
