Heroin Using heroin and physical dependence.

I tried heroin for the first time about two weeks ago. I never told myself I'd only try it once, because I knew that if I liked it I'd want to do it again. I've done it a few more times since. I've only smoked and snorted it as I have a fear of IV needles.

I originally set a limit for myself of only once at the weekends, obviously not every weekend but once a week is the max I could use it. The weekend is not the best time for me to be taking drugs, as I often have obligations at the weekend whereas I'm free more or less during the week. So I set myself a new limit of max 8hours for every 72 hours (taken from heroinhelper.com). Again this doesn't mean that I have to be high for 8 hours every 72 hours, but it is the maximum amount of time I can do it.

I imagine the most I'll ever be doing is once a week, probably less as I use a variety of other drugs which keep me entertained.

Anyone got any other tips for using and avoiding physical dependence? Please don't say don't use, as it doesn't really answer the question!

But it's the only realistic answer to your question. You get hooked, one way or another. Remember that present heroin-addicts never said "ok, so I'm planning to get addicted to heroin in the future". It just happened, after their "only use 4 times a month, in the weekends" became 8 times, then 15, then everyday, then every few hours.

One way or another you will end up addicted to it in the near future, and in an undeterminable time, physically dependent. It can be a week, it can be 30 years.

I know you'll prolly say "but I'm not like them, I can stay true to my word". I said the same thing, but I realized my "once a month" became twice a week and thankfully I stopped before I got physically dependent. I was addicted though, no doubt. Every time a negative thought surged me, I thought about shooting up for a couple of months AFTER quitting.

The short answer (and what you want to hear anyway!) is that if you only use heroin once a week, I would imagine that in theory you would avoid dependence. I'd space usage out as far as possible though. If you can do it once every two weeks or once a month, even better.

But the fact that that you use a variety of other drugs is not a positive thing. It lowers your inhibitions to use H more frequently.

Don't shoot up,
don't increase doses/frequency
don't use when something goes tits up.

Could just be recreationally smoking then something fucks up you're life and lady H is gonna be right there...

I always found that no more than 3 doses per 7 days worked well. It's just very difficult not to go over that.

i told myself i was going only to use twice this week. i used once 3 nights ago and once last night as well. i decided to go for a good run today, although somehow i figured i should bring my lil baggy with me as well, and i ended up snorting a couple bumps in the clubhouse bathroom. your use will increase. there's no doubt about it.

oh and i used when things went wrong, cuz i ended up getting a two B+'s in 2 classes that i was literally less than 1 point away from an A, and i just found out today, so thats why i used.

it felt kind of good to use after a good run tho as my body produced its own endorphins.

well for the question you asked, for me the first time i used i mentally got addicted but it took about a mths use at first , but once i got sick once after the first withdrawal, it would take me three days in a row usually, and once i used for along time yrs sometimes it would be two days, i have used heroin for alot of yrs and i dont know if i really know anyone who does heroin recreationally, so many times i would pick up the needle and say well only one time wont hurt but i loved it so i said well two days in a row wont hurt, then my mind just got turned around, so to answer your original question i think it does vary person to person, but i know in my circle of friends when i used if it was three days in a row your screwed but everyone is different i will tell you though so many times when i had a habit even now being on subutex i wish i could have turned back time to the first time i tried it oh well live and learn

I tried heroin for the first time about two weeks ago. ,........ I've done it a few more times since..... I originally set a limit for myself of only once at the weekends...........So I set myself a new limit of max 8hours for every 72 hours

Now, read the above again.... :|

As for your question, everyone is different. From my personal experience doing a bag (~0.1g) with almost non existant tolerance every 96 hours seemed to do the trick regards physical dependance. Just keep in mind its not the physical addiction that usually turns people into junkies, but mental/psychological one, at least initially so.

That said, have fun and be safe.

I was waiting for someone to mention that :)

Thanks for info all. I don't want this thread to be all about me, I thought it'd be good if we could all ad our own little tips and helpful hints for avoiding addiction. I'm sure there a lots of simple things that nobody really thinks of. There usually are with everything.

I'm shedding a tear for your future withdrawal.

Everyone starts with the idea that they will be the ones that never get addicted. Well, maybe there are some special people who understand the situation more clearly and can learn from the lessons of others that its almost guaranteed that they will get addicted.

My plan was also to only use occasionally, be a chipper as they say. After a month I used it more often and then more often and before I knew it I was an everyday user.

Never picked up the needle. Was always too scared to inject something straight into my bloodstream. Once the need for the needle came, I stopped.

Now I'm trying to get my old self/life back.

Heroin is different than other drugs. It becomes like a part of your life, like eating, toilet, breathing at some point. It will be the first thing you will think about every morning. It will become your alarm clock.

The high is so subtle, yet still so good that its possible to function on heroin. I think its so addictive cuz it has so much to offer to our brains as far as dopamine, while having the user feel relative normal. Everything becomes better to do on heroin. And when you don't have it, nothing becomes enjoyable for a very long period of time after quitting once your brain gets accustomed to the presence of it.

I haven't had it in 9 months and I still want it now. I think about it often, almost everyday. I was only a user for 9 months, 6 months everyday user, not even IV. Can't imagine how much harder it would be after IV use to stop.

Has anyone heard of self-control?
Eat too much get fat
Use too much get addicted
Fukn hard to figure out init.

Heroin is neither good or evil its an inert substance. How one CHOOSES to use it is the predicament but removing choice is censorship and we wouldn't need censorship if we exercised self-control.

Oh remembered reading that heroin is completely removed from the system in 4 days so if one only used every 5 days then there would be zero chance of developing a physical dependancy.

pretty much for me, using once goes straight into using everyday lol.....

keeping in mind once a week as alot of variables...make sure you space out the week.....not use on sunday, and "hey monday is a new week"......two days of heavy use can mess with you more than you would think....

I love that one.

If I could use the logic I use to rationalise heroin use to say, solving world hunger, everyone would be jammed....wait, what 8o

Don't underestimate it, no matter what rules you set they can always be changed

yea seriously. the rules are just there to help you feel better about using right now.. when you get more addicted (and you certainly will) youll have new rules to help you rationalize your use.

Heroin is inert? You realize that means 'doesn't do anything', right?

The vast majority of the medical and addiction treatment worlds would agree on 2 things pertaining to what you're saying - drug use is certainly a choice, addiction is certainly not. In fact, many would define it AS the opposite of this. No one CHOOSES to become an addict.

Addiction is characterized by losing control, losing that choice over your use. If this weren't true we wouldn't have near the addiction/alcoholism rates we do; or the crime associated with such; or the people still using despite risking death, losing loved ones, facing prison time and so many other consequences.

Why do junkies preach so much ? :D what worked for me is dosing twice a week but I still got addicted eventually.

^ are you calling ME preachy? Hm, that's weird I think I'm starting to smell a ban coming... ;)

By the way, I resent that comment. I am NOT a junkie, just wildly self-righteous.

well once you start taking heroin you might have the best laid plans to keep your useage in control. but unfortunately once you get into it you begin to lose control. then once heroin settles in, it takes over and you no longer have a choice. soon you will be making excuses as why to use it more and more. before you know it you become a slave to your addiction. i've never met anyone that was able to keep a heroin habit in control.
your best bet is to leave it alone. you've had your fun with it. get out of the game before you don't have a choice.
good luck, it's a hell of a ride if you don't get out now.

i can easily say that 4 out of 5 of my user friends cant keep it in control.....i know thats not the statistic....but its what i see here in vancouver
