When i take codeine 200-400mg and drink orange juice with it it potentiates it (which everyone knows) my question is, why after the effects of the codeine wears off (about 4-6 hrs later) and I chug more orange juice the effects of the codeine seem to come back, is this normal?:

^Ksa you're the chemist... why would orange juice potentiate it? I always hear that its a myth. Everyone HERE knows that grapefruit juice potentiates because it inhibits CYP450 enzymes but orange juice certainly doesn't, so how could it potentiate the effects of codeine?

^People recommend taking antacids before amphetamines which actually does help, I haven't heard of that before opiates.

That's after the codeine is in the system. When the codeine is in the system orange juice has no potentiating effect. What orange juice does is it helps codeine get into the system more rapidly through a more efficient stomach/intestine absorption, in fact any acid can do it. So I don't know if potentiating is the right word for it. If by it you mean the CYP450 then no it doesn't potentiate it.

It's more of a bioavailibility thing.

Do you have any sources on this? I haven't heard of this before and would like to know more and especially to what extent this occurs.

As a weak base, codeine will be less readily absorbed in acidic environments so I don't think orange juice would aid its absorption at all.

i to would also like to know since i take about 600 to 800 mgs of codiene a day.
i never even herd of the grapefruite juice thing, gonna have to try it ....never knew acidic drinks potentiate.
Im sure somewhere along the line i have drank the grapefruit juice as i love the shit, but dont ever remember getting higher or anything because of it...

Isn't the ceiling dose of Codeine like 400mgs? Whats the point of taking 600-800mgs?

The liver enzymes that limit it are genetically polymorphic, so some people naturally experience a higher ceiling. Generally, around 400-500mg is the ceiling dose for most people.

exactly. The orange juice argument made no sense. You would want to make your stomach more alkaline for better absorption, hence, antacids.

^ i was thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure.. but now that you said something i will also lol, the only way i could think they are dosing that is 2 separate 400mg doses like 12hours apart or something (not sure of codeines half-life or its metabolites ATM).. or maybe the ceiling varies from person to person (liver to liver) but if they are taking it for pain it could be placebo effect after the 400mg ceiling. who knows.

^its a common myth that orange juice potentiates/"boosts" lots of drugs from mushrooms to opioids. I'm guessing its due to the CYP450 activity of grapefruit juice and what I call "junkie science" ...basically drug users playing 'telephone' with information resulting in myths and misconceptions.

Erowid and BL have gone a long way to challenge many of these but we still have a ways to go.
