It doesn't look like marijuana will be legal in California this year. The most recent polls show Proposition 19 failing by between seven (Field) and 12 (LA Times/USC) percentage points.

The Yes on 19 campaign, advised by former Clinton/Gore spokesman Chris Lehane and California Democratic strategist Dan Newman, circulated a memo last night outlining why things aren't so bad, and how Proposition 19 can still pass tomorrow.

The backbone of the argument: Youth support, Prop. 19's get-out-the-vote program (rallies an canvassing over the weekend), and the idea that polls are undercounting Prop. 19's support.

Memo below:

it would be cool but cali will never allow it... the people say "Oh if we legalize it then we will just become the Amsterdam of America and a bunch of stoners will come here and cause PROBLEMS!" I say to that statement...." Your state is in a 50 billion dollar deficit, thats good if TOURIST come and spend money in your state you dipshit!"

legalizing pot will solve a lot of problems in America, I GUARANTEE IT !

How? By creating hundreds of thousands more pot smokers? That will throw healthcare another doozy to deal with. The money raised wont even put a dent in the states deficit. And even if it did...the itty-bity tiny bit we raised would end up getting wasted and spent by our politicians. And if marijuana ended up becoming a high seller like alcohol...then the money we make from taxing it will be dwarfed by the healthcare costs incurred, and by the welfare costs incurred. Alcohol has destroyed many lives. And as much as I love marijuana (I smoke it almost everyday all day) its not the light at the end of the tunnel.

I dont disagree that pot should be legal in its own way, but I dont know if this is the way to go about it. Stop forgetting how bad our politicians FUCKED us over! They are trying to appease the general public by giving us the "choice" (my ass) to legalize pot, and the possibility that it may be legal. I get high just fine on my own, and with medical marijuana its legal and easy.

^ "Hundreds of thousands" of Californians aren't going to suddenly decide that it's a great idea to start up a regular pot habit after it becomes legalized (if it does).

We're never going to move toward a free society if this doesn't happen. We need to crawl before we can walk...

exit polls?

is there somewhere to view exit poll results?

im impatient.

I have hope. :)

If you read the memo, they talk about a "reverse Bradley effect" that would effectively nullify the polls. It's the tendency of voters to lie to pollsters about controversial issues. Indeed, when interviewed by a machine, likely voters continue to overwhelmingly favor prop 19. If I were to rest my hopes on anything, it'd be on that.

^ I did read that. It is one of the reasons I have hope. :) I just don't see things changing that quickly. I know that the polls showing prop 19 ahead were very slim but I still don't think the tides changed that much that fast.

Did not pass

Prop 19 did not pass as of right now there is a 150,000 margin. Californians want to continue fighting the drug war :!

Hell yeah, at my old Catholic school we took a drug survey that didn't have our names on it but involved writing (in hand) about what drugs you have tried throughout your life and was collected in our normal groups of like 15 kids per class.

Who the hell do you really think was honest about most of the shit on there? They swore it was to get a deeper anonymous look but I didn't write shit on there for them due to the nature of it lol.

What a shame if this is correct, if it is broke and you don't fix it is is a BROKEN PIECE OF SHIT!

As of right now the results are:

Yes - 1,167,835----- 44%
No - 1,498,768----- 56%

That's with 17% of precincts reporting. It's not looking good at all. Wow. If the most pot-friendly state in the US can't get this passed, then what hope do the rest of us have? Land of the free.....unless. What a bunch of shit.

I swear to god...

My Dad's always going on and on about excessive government meddling with the lives of the citizens. Claims to be this hardcore libertarian, and stands by the philosophy -- until drug legalization comes up, that is.

I just don't get it. Why does everybody have to be nannied? Pisses me off to no end.
