Travel The MEGA Travel Thread!

Anyone familar with Koh Samui at all?

I realise that it is much more on the touristy side than what is being discussed in recent posts but thinking of tying it in with a week in Bangkok, week in the city, week on the beach sort of thing.

Any recommendations for particular areas or hotels? Does not even have to be Koh Samui as far from set on that particular destination but would like the journey from Bangkok to be not too much hassle....

I like a bit if nightlife but sure there will be plenty in Bangkok to keep me occupied in that respect.

I spent a week on Samui, with my mom, a few years back. We stayed in Bophut, which is a 'fishing village' on the northern part of the Island. It is much quieter than Chawang. We spent a few nights out in Chaweng, which was fine. It is noisy, touristy Thailand, but it's fun in those respects.
Flights to Samui from Bangkok used to be solely available on Bangkok Airways, but I think more airlines are now flying to the airport (if not the BKK-USM). The Bangkok Airways flights are common, relatively cheap, and quite nice.
We spent a day in Angthong marine park , two days diving, and a few days just hanging out. I'd definitely recommend Bophut over Chawang for accommodation.
In Bangkok, there are a few location options for a hotel or guesthouse. Staying by the river is nice, but further from much of the action. I've stayed at high end hotels both on the River and in Sukhmvit, and would stay in Sukhmvit or Silom rathern than the river. Banglamphu (the backpacker are, including Khao San rd) actually has some nice accommodation available away from the hustle of Khao San.

Oh, and stop by Zen @ Central World for some sushi while you're there, Jamshyd has some pics that will convince you if you're skeptical. (Jammy, you do you still have those?) It's supposed to be open again (It was burned down by the "Red-Shirt" UDD protesters).

We stayed here: http://www.thewaterfrontbophut.com/
The service was excellent.

If you want a chilled out, laid back, luxurious (but not luxury prices) hostel in Bangkok then google Refill Now. It's well away from Koah San Rd and the main touristy areas, loads of local cafes n shops nearbye and it's not too far from the airport. Sky train and river taxis nearbye. It's great. I stayed there for 6 weeks.

This place is amazing. The Vegetarian Festival is going on in Phuket right now.... I was watching the parade go by yesterday and a little boy ran out of the procession and up to me, shook my hand and shouted "Welcome to Thailand!" That about sums up how I have been treated by pretty much everyone so far. :)

Does anyone have any experience of rock climbing at krabi area? We're gonna spend about 10 days there in next june on our one month southern thailand trip.
We also want to see koh tao and koh phangan and of course spend at least a few days in bangkok. Any tips are very welcome to any of these places!

Herbaliser you would probably like Tonsai Beach for climbing but also for just hanging out and partying etc. Theres lots of places to climb and a few cool bars. The beach at Railay is better for swimming but if you are only going there for climbing then you might not care about that. If you have money to spend I reccomend Railay Beach Club for accomodation it was really relaxed and has the nicest position on the beach if not there are heaps of cheap places at tonsai

Also see if you can get your self on a deep water solo trip. They run from base camp Tonsai. Its unroped climbing on a deepwater overhang.

I just got back from a white water rafting trip in nan province and had an amazing time! I highly recommend it to anyone visiting thailand. We rafted for 3 days and camped out 2 nights there. The scenery there is spectacular and the rapids are quite fun.

Just had my typhoid & hepatitis A immunisation today. I had to have two jabs as there is apparently a world-wide shortage of Vivaxim - a 2 in 1 vaccine (possibly due to the Commonwealth Games). The doctor was telling me about all the things i have to look out for, and all i could think was BRING IT ON :D (12 days until we fly out!!!!!)

=D

Can anyone tell me about the availability of drugs in Thailand?
What kind of drugs can I buy at the pharmacies? I hear it's easier to get drugs in the northern part of the country compared to Bangkok and the islands in the south. Also, tell me a little about Cambodia and Vietnam.
I'm going to spend at least 6 months in the region very soon so I'm doing all the research I can at the moment.

Cheers

Do you need to have shots? I hadnt even thought about them to be honest - I was too busy thinking about chilling out on the beach.

20 days for me :D

Have a read through this thread - quite a bit of information on the drug / party side of the country :)

No, you don't. I never had any shots. There are no vaccination requirements whatsoever, other than yellow fever, if you've been traveling in a yellow fever country prior to entering Thailand-which I doubt you have been (there aren't too many yellow fever countries, some places in central/south america maybe).

Don't worry about it. They put such fear in people with this vaccination stuff. I've never had any vaccination in my adult life and neither did a lot of the people I met traveling.

Phew - I checked some travel sites and the ones mentioned above are advised but not essential for entry requirements.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest :)

I'll tell you one thing. Drugs are more available than I thought originally. You just have to know the right people. You can find it in bangkok but I still wouldn't risk it.

In terms of pharmacies, I've gotten valium and xanax without prescription but I heard some places will not sell it (probably the more touristy areas). It is illegal for them to sell it to you without prescription though.
