For the last few weeks I have won a fair bit of cash gambling. Winning a bit of cash in the members draw gave me the confidence to start risking a bit more. I wouldn't say I've made a fortune but it's paid for a few good night.

WA does not have Poker Machines, Queensland has licensed Surf Life Saving Clubs and Australias first Casino was in Adelaide. Anyone else have any stories or statistics?

Apparently IGT have 80% of the Worlds Poker machines, but a small percentage in Australia. Aristocrat is the prominent company here, maybe I should buy shares??

A member of bar staff gave me this glass sculpture when I won a Jackpot last night.

Probably hit about 3 or 4 jackpots last week :)
 
I LOVE Gambling. I love the risk, the suspense, the feeling you get when you double your money's. I HATE the feeling when you lose, or get cocky and think you know it all when in fact you don't. Also getting stuck in a bad streak is extremely painful when you see your chips dwindling.

Also just the overall atmosphere of it all, this probably sound's stupid but i feel rich and famous when I'm sitting at the roulette table...:p, Even if i walk away with less than i started with..:\

Klue, I'm assuming you got your information from Wiki? Because here in W.A, we only have one large casino called "The Burswood" and there's plenty of poker machine's available:\

According to Wiki:

Western Australia only permits the use of particular forms of gaming machine in Burswood casino, and no gaming machines may be used elsewhere. This policy (the most restrictive in Australia) had a long historical basis, and was reaffirmed by the 1974 Royal Commission into Gambling:

...poker machine playing is a mindless, repetitive and insidious form of gambling which has many undesirable features. It requires no thought, no skill or social contact. The odds are never about winning. Watching people playing the machines over long periods of time, the impressionistic evidence at least is that they are addictive to many people. Historically poker machines have been banned from Western Australia and we consider that, in the public interest, they should stay banned.

Err, not wiki off the top of my head. Oh yeah, the Casinos... Isn't there two in Perth?

Ive won plenty of time's, it was just that once when i had that spare $50 note left and i was looking for you anyway, so i decided to play (Under the influence) and just happened to lose.

It was just one of those times...:P

I quit the pokies years ago. I used to spend FAR too much on them.

However now I'm a big fan of betfair and the tab.

Betfair is great as you can bet on pretty much anything and there's a great iPhone app that lets you do it on the run! Also you can lay bet. That is, take the other side of the bet that normally the tab would be taking. Instead of backing something for the win, you bet that it will lose. It sounds easy, and can be.... however it can get very expensive if you lose.

For instance, you might bet that a dog paying $50 to win will lose. If your stake is $10 and it ends up winning then you lose $500! However it is wins you only win $10.

I also like hitting the TAB with mates at the local pub. I have no idea who to bet on but like to place trifecta's. I have success now and then so lots of fun!

Roulette is great too. Nothing better than having a few drinks while winning at the table....kinda sux when you are on a free fall south.

And of course poker nights with the boys! We tend to keep it a boys only event, start the buy in at $50 with buy back available all night until we agree to stop. We hire a dealer too...

^ I like the dogs. Never really study the form much, just go by name. I could see myself getting into it pretty easily, but still would only put no more than 5 bucks or so on a punt.
 
I work for the TAB (in the call centre - taking bets for the main wagering (races, trots and the little horses plus sports)...... and I have witnessed some big wins!

I would have thought Tabcorp would have a larger market share than Aristocrat?

My brother is a gambling addict so while I'm not against it, he's kind of put me off it. And I'm too impatient to stick with something if I don't do well/win withing a pretty short time.

Having said that I have a friend who will play about 5 games of Keno at about $5 each whenver he goes into a pub/club and consistently gets good returns.

Yeah I'm a fan of picking the two lowest paying dogs, along with a roughy. I box trifecta it for $3, meaning if the trifecta comes in then I get 50% of the payout.

I'm also a fan of backing 2 (or stripey) until it wins.

Very mathmatical. %)
 
My brother was employed by IGT straight out of uni after studying a mathematics degree. He has since completed masters degree in mathematics specialising in Synthetic numbers and statistics (eek) and now works at Aristocrat.

One chat over coffee with him and you will never take gaming machines seriously. Some of the stuff they are working on now is scary.
 
As for stats -

In FYE2005 gambling activities generated national tax revenue of $5.63 billion

Of that total tax revenue only 26.9% of revenue was generated by gaming machines. The greatest contributor is Lottery and Pools gaming which contributed 64.9% of total tax revenue, which is no doubt the result of how ATO treats wins to individuals.

Whilst the over all amount money spent on gambling and gaming activities is high, in my opinion the net takings are more important. Net takings are the amount of money recovered by the entities facilitating gaming less the pay outs to gamblers (i.e. winnings).

FYE2005 net takings across all forms was $15.46 billion and of that amount $8.7 billion was in the course of conducting registered gambling using a gaming machine, which makes gaming machines the highest in terms of net takings.

Based on national population estimates in 2005, net takings represent $996 per head of the Adult population. In terms of states, I found it interesting (and kind of disturbing) to see that of all states and territories the Northern Territory had the highest average net takings per head of adult population with $1,250 per adult.

In regards to Joannie's reference and question to Tabcorp earlier, I don't really think Klue was putting it out there that either IGT or Aristocrat are bigger than Tabcorp but I can say that $8.7b in gaming machine takings compared to $2.07b from off track betting at least gives an indication as to which medium is more popular.

They are hard businesses to compare though given the operations of each and the geographical scope of the businesses, Tabcorp is largely domestic where as IGT and Aristocrat both generate most revenue in the US and Asia.

FWIW... Tabcorps total operating revenue in FYE2009 was $4.2b compared to only $1.08b for Aristocrat for the same year.
