New Years Eve- Melbourne

Hey guys,

So here's the deal; my friend and I are heading up to melbourne from the 30th December to the 5th January to celebrate New Years eve and my birthday.

What I was wondering is what is (in your own opinions) the best place to spend NYE in Melbourne? It'll have to be illegal-drug-free because of my mate, but somewhere that's a little more chilled and you can meet plenty of people would be nice.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated!

Oh wait I have heard revolver holds a knitting night! I swear im not being a smart arse right now.... apparently it's on every Wednesday or Thursday night... i heard this ages ago though.

But yeah to answer your question. ... hmmm....fireworks on the beach? There may be people on drugs there though, but there will be drinkers too... i dunno man. There are clubs that have things on, can't guarantee there will be no one on drugs though. :\ Ya just never know now days!

I think if you choose to stay away from drugs is one thing, but im not sure i can guarantee you *may* struggle to find a totally drug free place here in melb on NYE....maybe in a pub? But id imagine that would be real crowded. What sort of scene do you generally like? But all in all, i dont think the 'best place to spend NYE in melb' would at all be drug free. Melb is known for is mixed culture vibe. You either gotta embrace it and be accepting, or gtfo!

Gotta say, DFRS is right, you are going to struggle to find something totally drug free.

If you like Trance there is a big night at Etihad stadium, Armin Only, playing an 8 hour set. But . . . . that will have all the obvious downfalls from a young Melbourne crowd, drugs :-)

The fireworks would be good, if you are looking for drug free, you will probably need to give a lot of the city clubs a miss, Melbourne does have a very strong drug culture and so they could be anywhere to be frank
 
I don't think you want to go somewhere drug free, I think you just meant you/your friend wanted to be drug free for the night.
Regardless, NYE is pretty sucky imo, StKilda beach can be fun, plenty of ambo's around in case you get too messed up and enough cops to scare most dickheads away (if that's what you're into). There's also some big paid thing set up on that beach, so you could a) jump the fence because it's supplied hooch in there or b) just enjoy the free (though probably shitty generic) tunes.
 
Thanks for the input, what I meant by drug-free is that I won't be on anything because my friend doesn't do drugs. If there's other people around us on drugs, it's no problem, if anything we'll have some interesting conversations :P Just a regular, drunk night out.

St Kilda sounds pretty good! The trance show also sounds sweet, but not my mate's kind of thing.

Yeah well there are plenty of pubs around the place. They will be really crowded though. Not worth the hassle imo.
 
Book a room in the Marriot and watch the countdown on a big TV in luxury :)
 
Considering your not from Melbourne just buy yourself a macdonalds cup in the city fill it with booze, head down to federation square check out the fireworks then just go where the night takes you, there are a hell of a lot of bars and lounge bars in the city it's hard not to find one. You won't be able to completely avoid drugs but it won't be in your face at the bars and lounge bars compaired to clubs and rave like events.

However in saying that IMO I'd feel a lot safer around drug fucked people than people hitting the booze in Melbourne.

I used to believe in this mentality as well, but i have sadly seen just as many scary people on drugs as on alcohol. It all comes down to the individuals and whether they can handle their shit or not i reckon.
 
Cheers for all the input guys! Now I'm not sure what to decide on :P haha, GnC sounds pretty good on the 2nd as well :) hmmmm... Well, I'll probably end up mixing al of these suggestions up and hopefully have an awesome night! :)

Alas if it's gna be that weekend following on from NYrs eve Friday nite I won't be able to come coz we big group of us r staying outat some house in the country partying on for 3 days. I"'gonna angle it for the weekend after (8th/9th? Around then)
Besides people mite be a bit too green stil from Nyrs
Tho large amount of cheese melting in the sun and booze that's gone warm does help such a feeling lol
