Marijuana seed dealer who spent fortune on pot reform gets 5 years

Canadian marijuana seed dealer and pro-pot activist Marc Emery has been sentenced to a five-year prison term, marking the end of a years-long legal fight once cast by federal authorities as a blow to the marijuana reform movement.

Imposing Emery's sentence Friday, U.S. District Judge Ricardo Martinez honored a plea agreement struck earlier this year by Emery to avoid a potential 10-year prison term.

What a shame. I'll bet he's glad to at least have closure since this whole thing has been going on for a long time.

It's also a shame that people have been spreading rumours about him sleeping with minors etc.

How can they give someone the same prison sentence rapists might get for just selling seeds? I mean, think about it - he's getting locked up for SEEDS! Cannabis is just a plant for god's sake!

I thought he was already in US custody, he just went in now huh? Damn... poor guy =\

I really thought he was making some money too, I knew he donated huge but damn, that's so sad he's broke, if he wanted to he could have been loaded but was all about the cause

Hope he gets shipped back to Canada quick

The war on drugs is so fucked. I get mad thinking about it. Im just so glad the old geezers that have been in the senate for 30 years are dying off. Get some new blood in there..or term length reform.
Please....half people in jails..prisons are drug related. How do we accept that as a society.

God damn, just goes to show. Stand up for what you believe in and your life will get ruined.

Land of the free my ass.

What a goddamn shame. Just as opinions about cannabis among the general populace are beginning the change too.

^ Opinions about apartheid were extremely negative among the general populace of South Africa for a loooooong time before Nelson Mandela was freed.

The opinions and beliefs of the people have little to do with actual policy.

What the govt and big-money holders want is what gets done.

At the time of Emery's arrest, then DEA Chief Karen Tandy issued a statement saying: "Today's DEA arrest of Marc Scott Emery, publisher of Cannabis Culture Magazine, and the founder of a marijuana legalization group, is a significant blow not only to the marijuana trafficking trade in the U.S. and Canada, but also to the marijuana legalization movement

"His marijuana trade and propagandist marijuana magazine have generated nearly $5 million a year in profits that bolstered his trafficking efforts, but those have gone up in smoke today. … Drug legalization lobbyists now have one less pot of money to rely on."

For reasons never explained by the Justice Department, Emery was the sole Canadian on the attorney general's most wanted list of drug traffickers. At the time, violence was on the rise among British Columbia-based gangs largely funded by the province's illicit marijuana crop. Emery, by contrast, was paying taxes on the seeds he sold by mail and through a Vancouver storefront, and has never been tied publicly to organized crime.

Good Job D.E.A., you locked up a dangerous Canadian tax-payer. I'm leaving my doors unlocked tonight :)
Good to know my own tax dollars go towards such an effort, as well as funding the salaries self-righteous narco-cunts whose only accomplishment is a horrifically-pitiful soundbite pun.
I sure hope she's the "then-chief" because someone put a hatchet in her head.
