Sheriffs in North Carolina want access to state computer records identifying anyone with prescriptions for powerful painkillers and other controlled substances.

The state sheriff's association pushed the idea Tuesday, saying the move would help them make drug arrests and curb a growing problem of prescription drug abuse. But patient advocates say opening up people's medicine cabinets to law enforcement would deal a devastating blow to privacy rights.

This will not happen. Say what you will about the medical community, they take HIPAA very seriously.

I'm remaining hopeful here and thinking the same thing. What a horrible breech in privacy that would be. I'm not even in NC and it irks me to no end to think about sheriffs browsing through peoples' *very* private records. It bugs me to think about people being paranoid about talking to their own doctors, the very people they should be able to remain open with. It infuriates me to think about people who genuinely need an assortment of powerful opioid-type drugs just to get through the day being harassed by police and forced to provide proof that they are not abusing the system.

If it does happen, it will be interesting to see how many sheriffs bring up each others' names... or their family and friends' names...

I agree that this would be an extreme invasion of peoples rights. Also a lotta cops and there families names would no doubt come up as mentioned above, but they would no doubt delete those names and info or destroy and papers mentioning any cops and there family,freinds,etc..I know that a former cop live sup my street and is a total pain pill junkie,he even "accidentaly" shot himself in the foot with a .22 caliber rifle to obtain opaites, and the former sheriff of a county next to mine when he was in office was a heavy user of opaites and crytsal meth,as were his daughters who worked at the jail. They said that if you had to go to jail that little jail there was the place to go if you had anymoney or knew the sheriif's daughters, they would get you weed, meth, pills, and even provide sexual favors so to speak with inmates they knew that sold drugs and who would "hook them up fro free" after they got out of jail.

I'm a little worried but I don't think this will go through. I live in Charlotte NC and the general sentiment seems to be that this is bullshit. All the news stations are portraying this as an invasion of privacy....which is usually a good sign cuz people here seem to agree with whatever the evening news says.

It is worrying though. I'm on suboxone, so I wonder if I'll be getting a knock on my door down the road. I kinda doubt it because SOOOOOO many people are scripted controlled substances, so a lot of people have an interest in not letting this happen. Like someone posted above, even law enforcement officials, politicians and business folks are all scripted controlled substances and most of them do not want the public to know about their pill stash.

This is the worst idea ever. Not only is it a major invasion of privacy but if the wrong person gets a hold of these records shit will hit the fan. You are making innocent people more vulnerable to home invasions/robberies.

I dont understand, how would this list even help them. Are they gonna monitor everybody to see if they are diverting? Just because you are prescribed a legal drug doesn't mean you are doing anything criminal. And this always raises the question of how does law enforcement determine if a prescription is needed or not? They didn't go to med school or have an opportunity to examine and diagnose the patient.

This reminds me of a half serious joke a famous pot doctor told me about suing the DEA for practicing medicine without a license.
