Overriding Naltrexone implant

^ I'd like to point out that the majority of bluelighters have in some way or another gone through w/d at least once in their life, if not multiple times, the main reason you have to be firm with things is to keep people from feeling sympathetic about it. There is always a reason for going through w/d, whether it's because you ran out of dope, or you are being forced to quit, or you are actually trying to better your life, in any case you can become a "better person", getting healthier, confronting problems you maybe trying to avoid with alcohol or drugs, or even just keeping all the cash you used to spend on that stuff. I'm not saying that I don't have a problem with drugs anymore, it's a life long process that you have to learn to deal with, it doesn't just go away after you detox, but in the long run you feel more accomplished knowing that you have the will power to control your own life in a positive way.

OP, have you gone to any NA meetings or similar? That is exactly what will help, talking face to face with real ppl who are going thru the same thing.

4 months later....

So, I didn't cut it out obviously and am really glad I didn't. I just got my second implant a few weeks ago and life couldn't be better. Been clean about 4 months. Going to AA daily (I have a strong support system of a lot of younger people in the program...well young to me since I am 26). Anyway I don't drink or smoke cigs anymore, put on about 15 pounds and still going.

Honestly my life hasn't been this good in years. My family trusts me again, they help me out whenever I need it and I help them out whenever they need it. I moved back home (to Baltimore) and am genuinely loving life.

So hey if it can work for me...it can work for anyone. I was the biggest J in the world. No job, no income source...just boost prilosec and other medications from wal-mart/target everyday and go straight to the pawn shop in brooklyn. Now I got a great job as a Network Admin in the city and have my own apt as well as a new car.

What a difference 4 months makes.

That's wonderful. Good to hear you pressed thru the discomfort. I personally dont think these naltrexone implants are clinically effective, but it seems to have worked for you, so thats great. I quit opiates with naltrexone tablets and it defnitenly made will power easier

I was on naltrexone 50mg/day (tablets) because of my heavy alcohol consumption. I found naltroxene to be an excellent med to cut down my drinking as it did take pleasure out of it and lessened my cravings.

I had (and also have now) virtually a zero tolerance to opioids and i had to take 4mg of buprenorphine IV to get high while on naltrexone. After a 2 day vacation from naltrexone 2mg bupe IV got me nodding.

(Source of bupe was subutex tabs)

^ ...i believe the word is 'facetious'. or maybe just 'asshole'?

OP - just wanted to say that's awesome. Honestly, for a lot of people (from those who try to help here, and those who face something similar), what you've done is tremendous and heartening.

i hadn't seen this thread in a while and didn't think that you'd actually be back to update it with your decision, so it was good to see that you made the right choice and haven't regretted it. yay for that.

You blame your parents for the naltrexone implant? Like, they would have given you one anyways if you weren't a heroin addict? Yeah, I'm sure... :\

^ Helpful.

There are various implants around, all with different rates at which they break down. What country are you in?

A common side-effect (and one of the many reasons they are not considered safe for use in humans in many countries) is depression or worsening mental health symptoms generally.

It's hard to know how the naltrexone implant will effect you, but you need to be really careful. The naltrexone reverses tolerance, so that once it wears off and you start using again, your tolerance will have receded much faster than you'd be used to. Shooting over the top is dangerous because gradually the implant will lose it's effect (over an indeterminate period of time), and as this occurs your tolerance will be down (and difficult to predict), leading to overdose.

That's the main reason so many people have died after using naltrexone implants for opiate dependence. Also don't be tempted to mix other drugs (like benzos or alcohol) because this just increases the risks. The best thing you can do is get yourself onto a proper treatment for opiate dependence like methadone or bupe, which actually has some research supporting it's safety and effectiveness.

^ Helpful.
I think it is helpful to try and help others gain a more realistic view on reality. Saying "heroin is my baby and has never wronged me" is so wrong I don't even know where to begin.

People often blame everything, but their DOC, for all their life's problems. Often the DOC isn't to be blamed on "everything", but surely if someone is an out-right fiend/addict, their drug addiction has surely got something to do with it.

I also think it stands to reason that most parents don't just give their kid a naltrexone implant for nothing... they typically try, a lot, of other things before this.

^ First time poster, asking a question about a life threatening issue and they get a lecture. That's not harm reduction.

wow man baltimore native to baltimore native dont cut that out by yourself

either go have it taken out proper or ride it out brother!

Stop

STOP! Once its in you there's no taking it out, at least not by someone who's not a doctor! The physical WD's will die out soon, after that its a mental game but thats why you have the implant, to keep you strait. Don't use any dope, its gonna be wasted and if you take a high enough dose the naltrexone can fail and you WILL OD!!!

I've been in your shoes, if you stay strait with your doc I can almost guarentee in 6 months you will be back to where you were before you started using. Naltrexone is proving to be a wonder drug!

And definitely don't try cutting it out! If you rupture the tablet you can OD on the naltrexone (high enough dose will shut down your liver). And if you manage to not rupture it and don't cut any arteries, infection can kill you later! Its just a bad idea and come on, I know your smart enough to realize how stupid that idea is just think!
