Best Song of All time

I did a quick search and while I came up with a number of various threads like "Best trippy song", "Best 80's song", "Your favorite blah blah song" -
There was no thread for the ultimate, of all time, best song in your opinion thread :)

For me, my top choice, though it is so hard to choose just one- is 'Strange Fruit' written by Abel Meeropol and sung by the very talented Billie Holiday.
This song was the first protest/political song-
It took a lot of bravery and a bit of a rebel spirit to take it on.....
It was made all the more powerful being sung by Billie b/c of her race, sex and her passion behind it.
At that time race and sex were an issue, I believe that this song helped to open many doors for so many musicians who came after Billie.......It changed the history of music.
I love the song, when sung by others as well- but Billie owned it.
So, that's my top choice.

my choice is: Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus

reason, uplifting 80s sound, plus its just super fun to sing along too while doing the buffalo bill dance, which ima do now. geez, why do i came across these threads that keep me up so close to bed time lol anywho /me dances the night away...
 
Ooh really too hard to say. If you tied me down and poked needles in my eyes til I surrendered, then I would say Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat.

When I discovered Cohen, and in particular the album songs of love and hate, it was rather a lonely yet hedonistic time in my life. I could relate to the man with the coat 'torn at the shoulder' who whilst seeming to have an exciting life was actually rather alone in the world...

I guess I'd have to go with Waiting for the Man - The Velvet Underground. Moe Tucker invented punk rock with her drum beat, and it opened the floodgates for almost every rock n roll group that came after them, acknowledged or not.

the others that i thought of after reading your post ocean were:

Horses - Patti Smith -- put females on the map when it came to punk, put poetry on the map when it came to music in general, discussed topics such as female sexuality, suicide, etc
I'm Your Man- Leonard Cohen -- the best Leonard Cohen song ever imho, and one of the most important poets that happened to be musicians
Lungs - Townes Van Zandt -- was one of the most underrated geniuses to ever walk the earth. this song is melancholy, hopeful, angry, vengeful and bitter all at once -- plus comes with one of the best one liners ever heard--- "salvation sat and crossed herself, and called the devil partner."

I've never heard of Townes Van Zandt, I'm gonna have a listen..........

Leonard Cohen could write. The covers of his songs are always amazing.
