"This 6 per cent fall in alcohol consumption is the largest annual drop since records began in 1948, when the British Beer and Pub Association started collecting figures. The figures include all alcohol sales, both from supermarkets and at pubs."

'"The handbook reminds us of just how vital a role beer and pubs play in the UK economy, in terms of turnover, jobs and tax revenue," Simmonds said.'

that's right, it's AMERICAN movie classics britfgs, and we need your gin because Mad Men is on. You can keep your benson and hedges tho, shits barely marketable across the pond.

Reading articles about alcohol in the telegraphc vs storys they right about drugs and its easily to see how the vested interests control this tabloid....

CREDIT CRUNCH!!!1!!1one

But seriously, that'll be all it is. Yep, it's pretty much all they attribute it to in the article too ... a quote from said article ...

"There well may be a percentage of people who are drinking less because they are aware of the health harms of alcohol, but most are probably cutting back because they are choosing to spend their finite resources on other luxuries,"

It gets a little tedious seeing everything attributed to the recession over and over again. It would be nice to think that perhaps people are starting to see the health risks of drinking alcohol regularly, and what with all the exposure the failed system of prohibition has been receiving recently, are turning to different drugs like cannabis.

Of course this is almost certainly wishful thinking, but heh, maybe one or two have seen the light.

Hahaha, a nice point I probably wouldn't have picked up on.

I actually think Mephedrone has something to do with this. I know loads of people who drink less or have stopped altogether because of it.

I too think there's some correlation between this and the mephedrone boom, certainly evidence to suggest this from my group of friends.

Even before the i opened this page, i new this was going to be a telegraph article. And you know why????

Alcohol and Tobacco companys are in the pocket of all these conservitive tabloids.

This has nothing to do with mephedrone, and everything to do with the proposed laws to increase taxing on both these products. THis, plus the drug review comming at the end of the year. Its alllllll about the money. These articles are used to skew the populations perspective on the whole drinking problem/selling alcohol at below cost/late night operating hours/24hour drinking..

Its pathetic. Every article they run on the legal highs is just more properganda to protect the profits of these big corperations.

i could of sworn i read an article like two days ago talking about how drinking in britain was way up

Hah! They [the media] are all the same no matter what political persuasion they are…
