OPELOUSAS, La. — At 18 months, Kyle Warren started taking a daily antipsychotic drug on the orders of a pediatrician trying to quell the boy’s severe temper tantrums.

Thus began a troubled toddler’s journey from one doctor to another, from one diagnosis to another, involving even more drugs. Autism, bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, insomnia, oppositional defiant disorder. The boy’s daily pill regimen multiplied: the antipsychotic Risperdal, the antidepressant Prozac, two sleeping medicines and one for attention-deficit disorder. All by the time he was 3.

He was sedated, drooling and overweight from the side effects of the antipsychotic medicine. Although his mother, Brandy Warren, had been at her “wit’s end” when she resorted to the drug treatment, she began to worry about Kyle’s altered personality. “All I had was a medicated little boy,” Ms. Warren said. “I didn’t have my son. It’s like, you’d look into his eyes and you would just see just blankness.”

Today, 6-year-old Kyle is in his fourth week of first grade, scoring high marks on his first tests. He is rambunctious and much thinner. Weaned off the drugs through a program affiliated with Tulane University that is aimed at helping low-income families whose children have mental health problems, Kyle now laughs easily and teases his family.

Ms. Warren and Kyle’s new doctors point to his remarkable progress — and a more common diagnosis for children of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder — as proof that he should have never been prescribed such powerful drugs in the first place.

WTF! Any doctor that prescribes anti-psychotic drugs to an 18 month old infant is obviously a quack, and should be stripped of their medical license. All those pills by age 3 is pure insanity too, I don't think a 3 year old should be on any one of those meds, let alone all five. I think doctors should wait at least until the patient is teenaged before considering such medications, and even then they should be used only in the most severe cases. There are pretty nasty side effects, physically and mentally, with these drugs.

I really hope that this is not common practice.

I've heard many many counts of people perscibing very young children antipsychotics. I'm sure it's not common practice but it does happen more often than one would think. Those poor children. I can't imagine how that affects the childs development and psyche.

What legit reason could you have for prescribing ANY of those medicines to a child that young? wtf..

Are antiphycotics even approved to be used on a child that young? I really doubt there have been any clinical trials involving children that young.

There is a perfectly reasonable explanation for doctors prescribing children antiquated anti psychotics like risperidone.... anti psychotics make drug companies a lot of money... and we're in a recession... who cares that anti psychotic drugs are linked to thousands of deaths, these kids need to do their duty as Americans and consume things that are bad for them... If you don't like America then leave... besides I prefer that the local peasants are sedated, and the younger that starts the better... you ever seen a zombie ask for his civil rights, or unemployment insurance, or haha health insurance? No what use does zombie have for health insurance he's already dead. All a zombie needs is brains, and it is good to go. Now if you'll excuse me I have a threesome to attend with Glenn Beck and Charles Koch. Sarah Palin said she was a maybe, but none of us are really into women so I suppose it doesn't matter either or.

lol. this women doesnt know how to parent and resorted to drugs to do it for them. Nice work mum, your kid has a taste for addiction, wait till his teens, uv done him a great service. The article clearly states that these doctors feel pressured into solving these childrens problems in as quick of a fashion as possible. Its like going to mcdonalds for parenting advice, only thing u will leave with is a happy meal.

Such radical treatments are indeed needed, some doctors and experts say, to help young children with severe problems stay safe and in school or day care.

uh....what? like kids didnt cope before? what happened to good old fashioned time outs? I cant count how many times i was locked in a room with nothing to do as a kid...you learn pretty damn quick to calm the fuck down.

I don't understand how fucking retarded people are. We live in such a magnificent time period in terms of wide spread education of the masses, which makes me wonder why 6-7 out of ten people are so stupid. I suppose its because of the media, because of an extremely wide spread epidemic of public ignorance, and perhaps also because of a general lack of Darwinism. Everything is WAY too easy and spoon fed these days. Not enough stupid people are being killed off by their own lack of intelligence anymore, and i honestly think its making a very major impact in the gene pool. Signs like "slippery when wet" - Well no shit sherlock... Anyone who doesn't figure that out for themselves should be subjected to whatever consequences come of it...

Either way, these parents, and the doctor, should be charged with criminal negligence and reckless endangerment.

Anyone else notice how the vast majority of prescription drugs have far many and far worse/dangerous side effects than many pure forms of street drugs...?

Did it ever occur to you that people have always been this stupid, and maybe always will be. 50% of people have an IQ of 100 or less. 2.3 percent have an IQ of 130 or over. Face it, most people are stupid. Part of it has to do with the fact that having a bunch of kids you can't afford is not something intelligent people who know how to use birth control, and aren't catholic are known for doing. Not that stupid people aren't valuable. I work with low functioning autistic kids, who have large and beautiful souls, and I know highly intelligent people who have no heart.

In regards to charging parents and doctors with crimes, listen to yourself you sound absolutely ridiculous. Was there criminal intent? Is wanting to help your child, but not having the capacity or resources to do so a crime? Is being tought in medical school that this kind of prescribing has occasional benefit a crime? I don't believe the doctors have criminal intent, and a lot of the doctors who commonly do this kind of thing are from third world countries, like the doctor in this article, such as Mexico or India.

Speaking of India, if you ever go there you'll realize this isn't such a magnificent time of mass education. Not only is education not widespread, given the rates of teacher student rape in Indian public schools(I've heard figures as high as 34 percent reporting having been molested) that's probably a good thing. The only people who deserve to be punished in my own opinion are drug companies.

In regards to prescription drugs having a whole bunch of side effects, street drugs have them too. Except if you develop pulmonary granuloma that kills you while taking heroin, you really don't have the option of suing your drug dealer. That is why drug companies list every possible side effect no matter how unlikely, and drug dealers don't. Not to say that the side effects of some pharms don't outweigh the supposed benefits. SSRI's are so useless and side effect laden it is just shocking to me that they haven't become obsolete, and anti-psychotic side effects are in my opinion worse than psychosis.

Apostacious "The amount of people misspelling "atypical anti-psychotics/neuroleptics" in this thread surprises me."

If you are referring to me Apostacious, please send a reply or PM letting me know so that I can promptly rip you a new asshole you pedant.:p

A very large portion of autistic kids are very bright and intelligent. Not that that is even relavent, just wanted to point that out. Autism doesn't necessarily mean diminished mental capacity, in many cases it actually involves increased mental capacity in certain areas.

In regards to charging parents and doctors with crimes, listen to yourself you sound absolutely ridiculous. Was there criminal intent? Did i say they had criminal intent? No. Was I being entirely serious about charging them? No; however i believe this doctor to be extremely careless and the parents should be ashamed. They have totally destroyed their child's life by subjecting him to extremely dangerous drugs at an extremely early age without having any idea what they were doing. I will bet every dollar i receive for the next month they didn't research anything for themselves and did whatever the "doctor" said. And MANY people on this forum would agree with me that doctors don't know shit about what they are prescribing half the time. They look at the symptoms then look to a booklet to tell them what to prescribe, and have very little knowledge of many side effects, especially the long term side effects associated with these drugs and ESPECIALLY when these drugs are subjected to such young children who are supposed to be developing their brains not diminishing them. I know various people who have been on these medications since very early ages. Every single one is EXTREMELY fucked up mentally now. It kills me actually because two were very good friends of mine for many years but the medications have caught up with them.

Also, what are you implying when you say that most doctors who do this kind of prescribing are from third world countries? Almost looks like you were trying to say they suck at being doctors and lag behind to keep up with American doctors. However i know that's probably not what you meant.

Considering that what you just described in India is 100% better than public education world wide a few hundred years ago, and considering a large portion of the world isn't India, or third world at all for that matter................................Enough said.(And don't bother trying to tell me that a large portion of the world IS third world as if i don't know that. Because that's not relevant when comparing 1st world today to 1st world any other time in history.)

Yeah but thats my point, if you rely on your drug dealer to tell you the side effects instead of doing the research for yourself then you will, and rightly should, deal with the consequences. Also, a very large portion of side effects from street drugs are due to ROA, inactive/secondary active ingredients (cuts), lifestyle, and impatient stupidity while jonsing. Like using old bacteria laden water for example.

Not trying to start an argument so please keep it debate-full, just trying to defend my opinions.

What the hell? You can't just JAM chemicals in to a brain that plastic and not expect weird shit to happen,

I'm perfectly willing to keep it civil.

Again not only do I work with ASD's I also have one in the form of aspergers. I know very bright kids with autism, I know kids who seem to be operating at a diminished capacity, but when they communicate through writing reveal sensitive, verbose, well spoken, and cogent thoughts. I also know people who genuinely are at a diminished capacity. It's relevant because despite my feelings towards stupidity, I'm not quite deluded enough to believe that intelligence is a prerequisite for worth as a human being. I'm going to restrain from lashing out at you for lecturing me on autism, if you're interested in autism good on you. They could use all the help and support they can get.

If you want to charge doctors and parents with this kind of thing your are going to have to establish malicious criminal intent. Other wise no jury in the united states will convict these mothers and doctors. You are presuming these drugs cause those who have used them to have there lives ruined based on your own anecdotal evidence. Thing about it is it's very hard to establish correlation equates causation, as just because billy took x, and turned out y, doesn't automatically mean x consumption causes y. Further there is always going to be counter evidence to what you posit, ex. I was prescribed risperidone, seroquel, various anti depressants and benzos, and ADHD medicine in adolescence. Not saying the treatment was helpful, but one would have to have a very strong bias to consider me to be occupying a ruined life.

In regards to third world doctors, I have experience working with them at hospitals, and though some are very nice/fluent in their specialty, a moderate amount of them are not. I'm not the only one that feels that way, I've talked to a lot of nurse friends who feel that foreign doctors are occasionally not sufficiently trained to operate in American medicine, while many of them have bizarre or alternative approaches to medicine that the nurses hate having to comply with. Again that is my personal experience, certainly not enough to draw a broad induction about foreign doctors in America.

In regards to doctors relying to heavily on trial and error, I just think that is one of the ills of the American medical system. Doctors are trained to diagnose, but often they aren't all that good at treatment. For somethings at least, say mental illness, I think it would be more efficient for a pharmacologist to decide the course of treatment, and consult with the doctor, but that will never happen.

Considering that what you just described in India is 100% better than public education world wide a few hundred years ago, and considering a large portion of the world isn't India, or third world at all for that matter................................Enough said.(And don't bother trying to tell me that a large portion of the world IS third world as if i don't know that. I think it's relevant, and I don't understand why you feel the need to decide for both of us what is relevant, if I say something you don't feel is relevant, feel free to call what I said into question. It's not well mannered though to predict what I'm going to bring up, and attempt to prevent me from doing so. It is relevant, in my opinion, because if you tally by number of nations or just broadly divide the population, either way there are about 195 nations, and maybe 50 of them qualify as developed, although that's being liberal. The fact of the matter is that quality of life in developed countries is an anomaly, which is often achieved and maintained at the expensive of other nations, and not possible for most countries at the same time, do to the fact that resources are limited. I would say that your comment about education 100 years ago is relevant only to your original statement, though not to my reply. I felt your claim that we are in a time of milk and honey to be centric to your living standard.

Yeah but that's my point, if you rely on your drug dealer to tell you the side effects instead of doing the research for yourself then you will, and rightly should, deal with the consequences. I think a large portion of drug side effects from street drugs comes down to purity, but a large number of symptoms listed on the box insert for a medication are one in the one thousand probabilities. If someone was taught to trust doctors, and maybe had some experience that supported this belief, I really don't think it is so necessary to be harsh on them. Will they deal with the consequences of not being more interested or involved in their treatment? Yes. Does that person deserve diabetes for not being more skeptical? I don't feel so.

Only few people understands those who have mental illness. People are blinded of what they can see when they know nothing about the patient's history. On Kyle Warren's case of Opelousas, La., Antipsychotic drugs were given to him when he was 18 months old. This was designed to help with the outbursts he was having. When he was three, he was then identified as having autism, bipolar disorder, hyperactivity, insomnia and oppositional defiant disorder, says the New York Times. Even his mother admitted he was “a drooling, sedated, overweight zombie” due to the treatment. Kids getting antipsychotics is something experts are now looking into because of things like this.

Yeah that kid's brain hasn't developed at all, and he will probably end up being a massive dopamine fiend as a teenager because of it. Good jorb doctor death, man just reading that makes the autistic child in me want to do some wrong shit to that man.

People stopped hitting their kids. Even more, they stopped disciplining them altogether. Nowadays when a parent says "no" to a 3-year-old and they keep on doing what they've been told not to, they just stand there puzzled and hopeless. It's fucking pathetic.
