The AusDD Drug Literature Thread!

I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but can't be bothered re-reading the thread to find it, so I'll recommend it again in any case, Junkie by William S. Burroughs. It's not the most amazing piece of literature, and feels oddly incomplete, but it's a fascinating window into the drug culture of the 30's through to the 50's/60's. The different chemicals, the slang, the culture, it's really interesting to see how things were back then. One thing that got me in particular is how popular pharms/doctor shopping was. We think of that whole culture as a recent phenomenon (or at least the media like to portray it as an 'epidemic'), but by the way he describes it people were getting high on morphine/benzedrine/barbituates/etc as much as, if not more than, street drugs.

"I recall hearing a maid talk about opium, and how smoking opium brings sweet dreams, and I said: 'I will smoke opium when I grow up.'"

Another worthy collectable from the 70's press might be The Little Golden Book of Hallucingenic Plants. It was in the Little Golden Press series of educational handbooks and described a range of common and lesser known conscience-altering plants and their histories of usage. Don't quite know how this title fitted in with the mainstream topics kids were encouraged to engage with back then, but it sure is an interesting read.

I lent out my copy some years ago and never saw it or the person again :( But then I found it online as an e-book :) At age 17, alongside the original "New Zealand Whole Earth Catalogue" that little golden book played a big part in my discovery of strange exotic customs and the fascinating chemicals nature produces :D

Available through Erowid The Little Golden Book of Hallucinogenic Plants

Well there is the two obvious ones, PiHKAL(Phenethylamines I Have Known And Loved) and TiHKAL(Tryptamines I Have Known And Loved) by Alexander and Ann Shulgin. And of course DMT The Spirit Molecule. I am in the middle of the spirit molecule at the moment, it is a fantastic book!!

They are good starting points!
