A warning for older bong smokers

Saw a mate I hadn't seen in about 6 months last weekend. He just got out of the hospital for a, wait for it... collapsed lung!

How old is he? Only 18.

He was a big bong smoker and loved to rip the fat ones. He smoked cigarettes too.

Funnily enough I saw him at the RSL where he was drinking after being told not to by the doctors. He said he's given up all forms of smoking though.

Very tragic and a reminder of how important this thread is, even for young people.

I have an Aromed vape, and recommend it highly. I don't have any lung issues that I can feel, and I only get HIGH now, not nec. wasted. It took a week or two to adjust, but now I find joints too harsh, and the body hit too overwhelming. I only smoke socially, never at home.

I have also cut down to a cone a day max, with days off here and there after smoking pot habitually for 18 years.

The cheaper vapes can cause inhalation of fumes from the materials used in the device, stay away.

On a world scale bongs are not that popular. Harsh way to consume cannabis IMO. (no offense to those who do)

^ It is all subjective and you are entitled to your opinion, but regardless of whether bongs are your preffered ROA or not I don't understand how you could call them "shitty" when it is arguably the most efficient way to consume cannabis.

You start to form that kind of opinion after owning a decent vape for a while. It's all about the body load associated with pulling a cone or smoking a joint. You decide you don't need that and can get better inebriated with the vape anyway.

I still think a bong is a more efficient method than a vape though.

^ Well IMHO efficiency doesn't translate to shit, whether you personally prefer it or not.

Tis a bit sad in 8 years of heavy cannabis usage I have neither used a vape or eaten my bud. I dunno, these days smoking bongs basically gives me a mild body high and keeps me sane, I am probably as addicted to smoking it as the drug itself. Vapes just don't look fun to me, and hashcakes are less appealing because you totally bypass any sort of process using your drugs (other than the obvious cooking and eating) and I actually enjoy smoking, also, I prefer weed to psychs and from pretty much all accounts oral cannabis is more effective so I don't see a personal benefit to me other than saving my lungs.

(Sorry about the price PD)

As I said, no offense intended. This is purely an opinion that might be useful to someone looking for a new method or to break a habit.

I stopped using bongs very early on due to breathing issues, increased chest infections when sick, getting sick from mates and high maintenance to keep them clean.

I also found that whilst I got more wasted from a bong hit in the short term, I needed to top up every 30 mins to prevent coming down. It also prevented my group of friends from effectively socialising on any meaningful level. Usually resulted in console gaming, eating etc.

Smoking joints was much more fun for me and my friends. However, as VB said, after using a good vape as intended, smoking feels a little primitive.

You'd have trouble adjusting to a decent vape then. It took me 2 weeks after getting mine to empty the water from the bong after 18 years of smoking. Proud to say that I am a non smoker now.

Sorry to hear the stories folks,
Scares me (I am 51) used to love my aqua pipe mini bong [source removed] I used to put a flavored bottle inside it was hi tech in 1978. Never been a conventional
bong smoker (always knock them over ) I never had a problem and played sports (till I was 30) at a national level. But have never smoked tobacco, never had any medical stuff. Perhaps it is other things genetics, diet, good luck ?? Makes you wonder

moved to Melbourne 4 years ago still not found any good smoke, (hard when you are older I guess)

There seems to be a fair bit of confusion here. For starters when they put the chest tube in they do not enter the lung and drain fluid, they enter the pleural sac and drain air (mostly nitrogen as oxygen is easily absorbed). If they stabbed into the lung they would cause a larger pneumothorax so if they need to drain fluid from the lung they go down through the throat. The collapses that are mostly being referred to here are spontaneous pneumothoraxes caused by the bursting of blebs/cysts (air bubbles) in the lung wall, these are genetic deformities and would not be caused by the use of bongs. I am 18 years old, I have had 6 lung collapses and I am waiting on surgery to be performed that will allow me to have a normal life again. I heavily smoke cannabis (I mostly use bongs but really anything is fine) and can assure you that it does not cause collapses. I am not advocating it as inhaling any impurities is certainly not good for your lungs, however, realistically cannabis is not as harmful as a lot of other things encountered in day to day life.
