hey Bluelighters SMFG reporting back from an absence i recognise most of u mods still so if iv posted this in the wrong place pls feel free to relocate...
now OT: im currently having severe probs with my anxiety/panic disorder, my meds have increased in dosage ect but i am also useing lots of herbal teas as i fight to take my meds as long as i can and the teas help sometimes....
so i was wondering what you all think?
does anyone else here engage in brewing teas for anxiety etc.
i currently have passionflower, mugwort, catnip, damiana, slipery elm and scullcap....
im messing around with different combos does anyone else have any different suguestions or recipes that they enjoy??

Seeing as Kava is banned in Aus, I would suggest experimenting with Valerian.

Preload with Vitamin C.

Cover 15 grams chopped Valerian root in a pot, add boiling water and put lid on to trap vapors. Simmer for 20mins. Drink with honey. It will stink out your kitchen but the taste is ok.

Catnip is similar and can be prepared the same way using 25gram.

Mulungu is good for anxiety (10-20gram) , as is skullcap (20 gram, prepared like valerian above).

Aswaganda is a sedative adaptogen (tonic), prepare 10 gram in a similar way to the valerian above.

I have combined Valerian, Skullcap and Aswaganda with fantastic results.

There are lots of milder herbs like lemon balm, chamomile, lavender, hops, passion flower, wild lettuce. They are mild alone but can combine well with the stronger tranquilizers listed above.

I would pass on the mugwort - tastes like shit and made me feel depressed.

St Johns wort works but needs to be taken daily before results are noticed. It combines well with Rhodiola.

wow thanks man theres a couple in there i havnt had yet my teas have been in much lower ammounts as they cost a bit and i just sorta go off what the pack says. eg skullcap sugeses only one or two grams per serve.... do u really need that much 4 effective results??.... i probably should mention that im useing these teas in the morning to fight the urge to have to take my xanax of which im latley needing every day, sometimes the teas take the edge off a little but nothing ive come across other than kava has come close to effective anxiety relief, im still pretty shakey in the end.... but wicked cool il try some of this thanks n keep em comin.

Always safest to test a small dose of anything first and work up slowly, to test for bad reaction.

The doses I listed above are to actually feel a stone, like a mild benzo like feeling. I am sure many people may benefit from a tea spoon or two in a cup of tea as a mild relaxant, but the higher doses above will eliminate bad anxiety for a least a few hours. Most of these herbs contain GABA related chemicals.

fuckin awesome J, thats good news 4 me but still the price from this place were i get it is a bit expensive..if i have to use this much il b forkin out a lot of money... maybe i could get off the net cheaper... dunno but i got more meds now and was told to stick to my 2mg xanax today by doc and was given seroquel on top of that and endep.... il give this herbs a try wit slightly higher doses n report back i sopse..many thanks and im happy to hear anything anyone else has got to say :\

I have used mulungu recently, I find it very sedating though which may be a problem when using for anxiety.

Kava I loved for anxiety, valerian I have not experimented much with yet.

ok so imoa get some mulungu, luckily though there is importation regs on kava but its still out there, im lucky enuf to still have some lying about n u can still get it in pill form from healthfood shpos....im chrashi a bit now bl...i b back in a littlewhile..nay others?:\

Both skullcap and Aswaganda relieve anxiety but do not cause brain fog or sleepiness. I have read reports of them being used to calm nerves when sitting an exam without clouding the mind. They both clear mental fog. Skullcap can also be smoked for a quick relaxation.

Valerian, Catnip and Mulungu tend to have more of a knock out effect, so better in the evening before sleep.

The St Johns Wort / Rhodiola is a good safe long term option.

I would probably advise against long term heavy Mulungu use, at least until you have read through the available research. Other members of the family are somewhat toxic, but I have experimented with doses of up to 30gram chopped root without any side effects.

Another I am currently looking into is Magnolia. I believe it contains substances that are active on the BZ receptors.

ok well i had tea of skullcap this morning... i dumped probably a good ounce or so in there, pinch of catnip....well did it taste like ass it may have had a small effect on me but ive alreay taken my benzo an its only 10:30.. so yer it may have helped i was just 2 caught up on the taste, valerian is now in mind nxt time i can afford to il grab some of that too...and damiana... cant do it dont like it ruins just about every tea i mix it in with, so il just keep that aside to smoke:\

Damiana is more suited to use as a female aphrodisiac but some claim mood enhancement or mild euphoria. You can mix it 50/50 with catmint (15gram each in a tea + a spliff of the two mixed together and smoked) for a mildly euphoric sedative effect.

Keep in mind freshness, age, time of harvest, climate and other factors will influence the potency of any botanical, as well as the taste.

Liquorish, honey or mint can sometimes be used to hide the taste of unpleasant botanicals.

Another one to try is the aryuvedic herb Bacopa Monnieri or "Brahmi". Some studies suggest it may have nootropic and anxiolytic properties.

thanks Fin thats another one 4 me to lookout for:\
dunno what im drinkin this morning im punchin down the grapefruit juice atm ,may try another skullcap one but lesser the ammount or maybe even re-boil the leaves i kept em on a plate as i was told that sometimes u can reuse.i've been sweetening with sugar to little effect so il go a dolop of honey n c if that makes it any more palateable
i suppose il repost here again once ive tried one of these other suggestions
there definitly no substitute 4 pharms, sometimes takes the edge off a little though.

Be careful taking GFJ with random herbs, especially those with sedating properties.

^ Yeah remember GFJ can inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes so might extend the half-life of some of the substances you can take.

thats why im useing it.... my benzo tollerence is too high, im using the grapefruit juice to stretch out tha xanax, the herbal teas are merley helping me fight to take pharms in the mornings i still gotta have em but such a short halflife, i need something sedateing to help me fight untill as far into the morning as possible, then 4 the evening ive got another two meds to take, both im finding quite nasty...

sorry OT... so for HR sake, does anyone know of anything i should be maybe avoiding herb wise??

i just drank a 600ml bottle of skullcap/damiana tea with honey.. not so bad but im watchin tv and the screen hass kinda warped a couple of times similar to what u get on LSD/LSA however very very mild may have relaxed me n calmed the nervesa bit....

im feelin ok but i really wanna chew down more xanax but just cant as ive just enuf to last me till i get bak to the docs, im going for ANYTHING that will help me not fuck this week up...
knowing passionflower has small amounts of MOAI ive not gotten that going although i like it.:(

^ Avoiding herb wise, do you mean herbs that are nasty or certain combinations of what you have?

As for the MAOI thing, what particular substance are you worried it might interact with?

you can get kava tablets at the pharmacy. The brand is mediherb and they contain the extract of piper methysticum root containing 50 mg of kavalactones. A practitioner can only dispense it though. It does work, I find it gives a very sedative effect similar to benzos. I take them during my uni exam period.

^ I haven't heard good things about the extracts on BL, most people recommend the fresh root... but I've been thinking of getting the pills because you aren't allowed to import the root here anymore. I might try the liquid extracts first though because I have heard some good things about that on here.

well herb wise, anything that could be possibly become toxic with the addition of the grapefruit juice....

The MAOI although only in minuite ammounts.... was jus worried that it might fuck with either of the other two meds im on other than xanax.... amiytriptyline (endep) and this Quietapine ( seroquel) as im not alltogether fimiliar with these two. although i no the latter is like Zyprexa which its acting just like wit all the memory loss but it doesnt knock me out 4 long enuf,, im riseing real early in the morning thusly im hangin 4 tha xanax earlier.... this is where the teas are coming in....trying to fight those horrible feelings even if jus 4 a little while.... hope im makeing sence im not doin too well today...

oh an yeah i got the kava extract pills i have one every now n then but dont seem to notice any effect, imo you really need to brew the drink from the powdered root... but ty for the suggestion:)

Kava and Valerian can give you a decent hangover.

Chammomile - strong organic/freshly grown tea will help in a big way with no side effects. In fact it is good for many other concerns.

Skullcap, passion flower, lemon balm, alfalfa, valerian, kava are all good combined in small doses, but not nec. with prescription meds as prev posted.

Chammomile is safe with virtually everything, even pregnant women can take it. Don't underestimate it just because it is old news....
