I thought I'd post this particular question here since my thread in SO didn't get a lot of attention.

Later this year, I'll be entering Mexico from the US en route to Central America. Since I will be entering from Cali, I am debating whether the Baja is worth the very long trip or not. (Either way my first real stop in Mexico is Los Mochis, from which I'd take the train through the Copper Canyon - the more straighforward route would be down along the west-coast of the mainland).

Either way, I will have to travel south. The thing with the baja is that it takes 24-hours of continuous driving/bussing to get from Tijuana/Mexicali to La Paz!! It also costs more than the rest of mexico, and then the ferry from La Paz costs about $80 and takes 6 more hours to get to Los Mochis - which means several more days' worth to get through the norther bulk of Mexico - something I don't particularly look forward to..

So yeah, any experience in Baja California are welcome, and if you recommend it or not. Also feel free to comment in my C. America travel thread in Second Opinion Forum.
 
Once you get south of Tijuana, there are some really fantastic beaches, cheap (yet delicious) restaurants, and relatively inexpensive lodging as well. I've only gone south of Tijuana a couple of times, and aside from a friend losing my car keys in the Pacific ocean (necessitating finding a locksmith in the next town over...not an easy thing to do on a Sunday!) I always had a good time. I found the people to be incredibly friendly, and unlike in some of the resort cities in Mexico, they weren't trying to hustle you for any money or get you to purchase things you don't need. Police presence is fairly high among the main roads, and if you're driving you can expect to have your car searched at least once. However I didn't have any problems with the police actually threatening to arrest me or even ask for bribes; they were simply doing their job. However this was about 10 years ago, before the drug violence really took off in the area, so things may have changed substantially since then. If you go to Tijuana itself, I'd recommend caution, especially at nightclubs, since kidnappings aren't unheard of, and police will be looking for bribes if they accost you.

Have you gone all the way south to the Cabos? Also, would you say that Mexicali is a safer bet than Tijuana?
 
i was under the the impression of a cartel/police war going....


and people getting killed....all over.... but you might get good prices on a hotel
 
Jam, I understand Baja to be a desert that has little or nothing going on but ridiculous temperatures .
My son works on the central west coast and loathes the Mexico city area - his words::dirty, violent, crowded, poverty abundant . He loves the southern most area in the country .
All that I know first hand is Juarez and that was nearly ten years ago .
 
Jam, TJ is a wide open air drug market place, probably rivaling places like Vancouver, between the pharmacies and other drugs like heroin, meth, coke, ect... Plus, possession has been decriminalized of small amounts as of 1 year ago. They still probably will extract a bribe. Careful about abductions. As one person said, stick to the toll roads- worth the money.

I believe that this is strictly between locals, and any foreigners that get caught in between is simply unlucky (unless you go searching for trouble, of course...).

My plan is to not remain in one place at once, especially near the border areas. I am hoping to be able to coordinate timing so that I simply go from bus to bus.

That is my general feeling as well. I plan to spend most of my time in Mexico in Oaxaca, far (I think) from all the troubles. And even then, it'd just be a stop on the road to Costa Rica. Definitely won't be entering from Juarez!!

I'm glad someone from San Diego posted :). I was told that San Diego is an amazing city. I might visit it. I am hoping to go through Mexicali instead of Tijuana, as it might be too much for me. Do you know anything about Mexicali?

I don't know about mexicali- went through their briefly on a college break train in 91'. There is a mexican (I think from Sonora) on BL that might be able to give you more up to date info. Part of me says you gotta check out TJ but its skippable. TThe Zona Norte (Red Light district) and Ave Revolution are the main spots of attraction. The whore houses, I've heard, the girl brings in the meth pipe for ya filled to your room. Last I heard, Americans were doing lines of coke off strippers tits. The place probably is too much. Rosarito beach and the coastline south of TJ are cool to check out. Used to be a side street in Rosarito a couple of years ago and I'm sure in the red light district in Ensenada were one can score. Careful, though, abductions are a real threat. In my opinion Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) on the Sea of Cortez (closets beach to Arizona) is worth checking out.

I guy by the BL name Charles Ferdinand that is the one that might have some info for you because he is a local. Might want to PM him a message.

Right a trip report if you get the time for FDS (foreign drug scenes).

It kinda reminds me of some greek islands (the less touristy ones- evokative in some way)

TJ sounds worse than Bangkok! :D

I probably won't engage in anything drug-related in Mexico (except maybe try and find OTC Ketamine...hehe). But I might explore it in less explosive, more backpacker-ish places like Nicaragua. Will definitely write a TR if I do. Btw, if you're interested I wrote a TR about K in India, it's in the TR forum.

Depends what yr looking for. Baja is nice, but it being the only stretch where you can drive in from america w/o the vehicle permit (well you can anywhere, but you cant go more than 10 or 20 miles south) it is a bit congested, touristy, and kind of filled with scuzzards. You can take yr car all the way to Cabo and it attracts alot of RVs and knuckleheads, and the folks who make a living swindling em. Tijuana is a sight one should behold, but once again it is mostly fratty tourists wanting to get high/drunk......yawn. Mexicali is cool.. still a border town but it always feels comparitively isolated....like tumbleweed blowing around style. Much more Norteno cowboy and the likes....my preferred crossing. Not the chaos and crowds of juarez or Tijuana. I like it. :)

Oh and fuck yeah on the Barrancas Del Cobre railway from Los Mochis to Chihuahua via Creel. Get off in Creel and go down to the towns deep in the canyons...batoplias, Santa Rita, etc. Heart of the isolated strange purity that is the Tarahumara. I had an amazing peyote trip in santa rita on easter sunday about ten yrs ago...<3

and Mexico is still neck in neck with India (in my world) as the best OTC K country (and maybe romania..) but it aint like it used to be. Its gotten alot harder in any of the border towns, and all the way down Baja....and in DF. But its still pretty easy to get in most places. And you mentioned Oaxaca...<3 Oh I love Oaxaca..........and plenty of K there too. :D
 
^ Thank you for the LOVELY news :D <3. At danger of breaking the rules (mods feel free to edit out), do you happen to know about the OTC status of K in the rest of Central America? I just need a "yes" or "no" for each country, no specifics...

Do you live anywhere near Mexico/west-coast? It'd be awesome to run into you on my trip ;). I had actually already planned to bring with me a single dose of Mescaline with me down there. The Copper Canyon was one of the places I eyed as being ideal for a trip... Costa Rica's Arenal volcano is another...
 
I'll keep it in, I don't see how OTC status of something is sourcing. It's just HR because it'll prevent you from making a faux pas asking for it if it's something you can't get usually...
