getting off the valium?

Im currently been taking valium every day since i chucked the booze. I have problems with them before but didnt mix them with alcohol. But since i finshed a librium detox for alcohol i've been taking any were in the region of 4-6 10mg tablets a day, for the last say 3 months. I only take them to relax and kill anxiety. Don't even get the giddish feeling from a couple. I have a high tolerance to them and dont want to up the does as in past experiences, keep saying ill get off them, but do more planning than action. But ive decided enoughs enough. I'm currently on antabuse (diulfuriam) and don't even know if they show be mixed with benzos. I've been to my community drugs team and the girl ther tealt me to record a diary of how many i've been taking see her again after a week but i've slept in for 2 appointments think mixing them with the, antabuse and cannabis causing the lathargy but now to see her this thursday afternoon ive been taking between 4 then was taking closer to 6 last week so i think i can stable myself on 4 for the next 5 days with no real headache. But then i want to reduce obviously im gonna listen to what she has to say in terms of detox but would dropping by 5mg every 5-7 days till im at 0mg be safe enough and not gonna give me serious withdrawls. I am sick of waking up every morning reaching for a valium bottle and want to start action instaed of just talk.

Firstly I would edit your thread title, when I first looked at it I thought you were going to ask how to get Valium. Change the "of" to "off".

In my opinion with the amount you've been using, tapering would definitely be your best option. Do you think you could handle a 5mg drop every 5-7 days, or do you think that would be too fast? Sometimes tapering off of benzos can be a very long process. I would speak to your community drug team and think of a reasonable taper plan.

Taper and taper as slow as possible to make it the most comfortable for you. Benzo WD's suck bigtime... I am sure some of us BLers can help you come up with a reasonable taper plan! Good luck!

I would also talk to a dr about your taper to be safe... you don't want to have a seizure or worse!

thanks for the advice. I will just try sticking to 40mg daily for the next 5 days until i see my community drugs team, also i have an appointment with my doctor this week so ill talk to him. He wasn't much help last time just said go to the cummunity drugs team, but ill explain im determined to get off these and try not to worry too much about it as in past experiences putting too much pressure on myself and cutting down to quick has just led me to going back up on my dosage so turns into a viscious circle. But ive only ever tried to do it on my own never with any support or help. So hopefully I can beat it this time with support and a realistic taper.

For a valium taper its often suggested to drop 10% per week, or if you get insomnia/rebound anxiety, 10mg every 2 weeks, because your gaba receptors take time to adapt to a lower dose of valium...

it's quite a long process, especially at the end, but if you go too fast

A) you will not feel well and
B) you can get rebound anxiety for years after stopping the valium if you go too fast, especially at the end of the taper

I was on Xanax or Klonopin for 10 years and tapered down to 1mg Klonopin. I have had enough and decided to taper off it starting with an equivalent dose.

So right now I am on 20mg diazepam (10mg x2 daily). My plan is to taper 5mg every month until I get down to 5mg, in which I will go down to 2mg the next month, then 1mg and then off. That is a 5 month taper to get off 20mg Diazepam but like I said, I've been on benzos for 10 years.

You didn't say how long you had been taking the benzos but I'm going to assume a year. Regardless, I think that you may want to taper off 40mg by:
Month 1: Go down 5mg every week.
Month 2: You should then be at 20mg. Go down 5mg every 2 weeks.
Month 3: You should then be at 10mg. Go down 5mg
Month 4: You should then be at 5mg. At the end of the month go off it.
If that's too quick then go down to 2mg and get off after 2 weeks.

10mg every 2 weeks would be miserable

has anyone had success with going so slow (say, a mg a week) withdrawal doesn't disrupt one's life to a significant extent? after many years of use?

I don'y quite understand what you mean. Are you saying thats too much of a dosage taper or too long off a taper period, as you say at first it would be miserable, then say its going so slow. I'm sorry i didnt quite understand your comment.
