Hey All,

I've created this thread after reading through the endless banter that has seemed to come up on a few of Shulgin's works as of recent, Pihkal and Tihkal.

I think 'Simple Plant Isoquinolines' was listed in that other thread too - an interesting book by all accounts.

I think it worth mentioning, Pihkal is covered by federal law, and is a prohibited import into the country.

Without further research I couldn't distinguish if Tihkal is listed.

Any other books that are worth a mention in here, feel free to discuss them!

I once read a book called "LSD, Visions or Nightmares?" lol, that was a good read.

Reading semi-anti drug books is quite interesting. Especially given i'd never taken psychedelics at that point.

^ Maybe people could give quick reviews or comments on the books they've read on this theme? Haha that could take you a while though Psilo :)

Perhaps this would also be a good place to post links to other interesting Aus-Drug-Related literature, not just books? Maybe journal articles etc that aren't easily found on erowid etc and aren't better suited to the drugs in the media forum? For example the report that drug mentor recently posted on adulterants:

Science - Demographics/Trends -
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=512951
http://www.cph.org.uk/showPublication.aspx?pubid=632

And here's an interesting one I stumbled across last year:

Drug Culture- Non-Fiction -
Palermo on the Pacific Rim: Organised crime offences in the Asia Pacific Region

I believe most of my knowledge has come from these books and that my posting on this forum shows that they are worthwhile.

I'm teaching music at the moment, but will add some comments to a few of my favorites when I get the time :)

As the thread title is rather broad, perhaps MrIbis can edit his opening thread. I suggest including categories and subcategories. Otherwise things will get messy and hard to find. Maybe something like:

Science

- chem/pharm
- analytical
- demographic, trends etc
- other med related
- general science

Law and Scheduling

- TGA, and related
- state
- federal
- other countries
- world treaties etc

Drug Culture

- novels
- non-fiction
- general
- folk heroes

General

This is just an idea, which I'm sure could be expanded on. Of course there would be subjects that are relevant to more than one sub heading, but it shouldn't be too hard to work out which one best applies.

As an EXCELLENT general resource, get my textbook:

Chemistry, The Central Science: A Broad Perspective (Brown et. al)

Awesome, my idea has come to life. :D

I didn't realize PiHKAL was illegal to import here, that is hilarious then that I got it for a birthday present just recently. :)

I'll have a look at some books I could recommend later... I am reading a psychology book right now that contains some interesting sections on drug use and their effects on people's state of mind and long term mental health.

^they've tightened up on what you are allowed to read these days post 911. I remember back in the early 80s that Napoleon's Military Bookshop in Pitt St had a great little book: "Home workshop sub machine guns". As I didn't own a metal lathe I never bought it but now I kinda wish I had - there is something delicious about forbidden knowledge (mmmmm forbidden knowledge...)

Some interesting general commentaries:
Saying Yes (Jacob Sullum)
Meanjin on Drugs

A nice little synth text "Psychedelic Chemistry" - can't remember the author

Diary of a Drug Fiend (Aleister Crowley) is heaps fun - "do what you will shall be the whole of the law!"

^ "Psychedelic Chemistry" by Michael Valentine Smith... there are mixed reviews on Amazon but seems like a worthwhile addition to my library.

'Junkie' by William Burroughs, a classic that I quite like. :)

Trainspotting :) hehehehehe

Yeah p_d, i don't know if doing it up like that is so important, I personally am not listing many - people can throw in their lists if they see fit. If you feel the need (as i haven't read most of these books except Pihkal and Tihkal), feel free to compile the list and either edit my post, or pm me to change it...

I don't have as much time on my hands as i usually would with my tafe stuff goin on...

Fuck man, I wouldn't even know where a few of my books are now days. I normally read them a few times and then send them off into the night to be read by all. Every now and then I get the odd one given back at doofs, which is a nice surprise. I have always been one to pass the knowledge on and I'm happy as long as they are getting read.

About a third of my list has been borrowed from others too.

I think it worth mentioning, Pihkal is covered by federal law, and is a prohibited import into the country.

Holy shit... thank god they didn't take my signed copy 8o

Great list Psilo :)

My friends and I also found Drugs of Hallucination - The Uses and Misuses of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide by Sidney Cohen MD to be a great read. It's from 1965 so some info is out of date, but I really enjoyed it on the whole. Includes some great trip reports from back in the day too! I think it's available from erowid.

I once asked p_d this question in an email, but have since lost that correspondence.

What are some good books for someone who is interested in learning more about organic chemistry? My current knowledge is based on high school (which I barely remember) and what I've read on wikipedia.

Also, I'm interested in anything on structural activity relationships or neuropharmacology in general. Any tips? :D

LSD Psychotherapy - Stanislav Grof

ISO seriously recommend anything by this man.

'Realms Of The Human Unconscious' &
'The Human Encounter With Death'
are phenomenal works.

^ "Psychedelic Chemistry" by Michael Valentine Smith... there are mixed reviews on Amazon but seems like a worthwhile addition to my library.

Ooh yes that's the one. Also can recommend "Psychedelics Encyclopedia" Peter Stafford, and "Psychedelic Sourcebook" Will Beifuss.

"Sex and drugs" by Robert Anton Wilson is quite fun - he hates on speed majorly. Gotta love sanctimonious trippers!
