Opioids Need advice for opiate regiment

I recently visited a psychiatrist to complain about low sex drive. In addition to being prescribed a dopamine agonist, I was prescribed 10/325 percocet twice a day for a month to "test" it out to see if the opiate raising my dopamine would raise my sexual desire.

In the several days that have gone by, it seems that it's done the opposite. It has blunted my sexual desire, but amidst the most depressive time in my life, I feel great. My anxiety is washed away, my depression is gone, and I am friendly and charismatic. I am getting a lot of compliments on how nice I am and how healthy I seem....

And this is only with a 5mg dose, not even the full 10mg. With a 5mg dose I get a boost of energy similar to methylphenidate.

However, my memory is affected, and I feel like I am dulling my brain taking this shit every day.

Concerned mostly with testosterone depletion, what is a "safe" dosing regiment? I've been doing 5mg three times a day, which is nothing compared to some people on these boards. And I have no raised it and will NOT. I am strong willed.

Will two days a week, 15mg each day, affect testosterone?? Should I just not take them? I feel like I am blessed for being able to get this prescription but at the same time I am split 50/50.

I want a libido and natural emotions but I also want to enjoy the amazing benefits without building tolerance or dependence.

IME opiates lower your sex drive, so why you would be prescribed Percocet for sex drive issues is beyond me. Oxycodone and Hydrocodone both are great for depression and anxiety though they are never usually prescribed for that. It shouldnt have an effect on your testosterone, but it will relax you and lift your mood. I would say if you stick to a regimen of 5mg 3x daily you will be fine, and as far as helping your dopamine and norepinepherine levels I would suggest Wellbutrin SR or XL...I take XL and it does wonders for my depression without hurting sex drive or weight gain

You dont think 5mg 3x/day will hurt my sex drive? I didnt have a sex drive before but I dont now either.

I dont even need 5mg 3x/day, maybe 5mg twice a day and only 5 days a week would do me well... but I'm still worried about that. And yes, I'm going to definitely get a prescription for wellbutrin. Right now I'm on Requip, which is a very powerful dopamine agonist, and it used for depression too.

Well what do you need the Percocet for specifically? If you are using it for its antidepressant properties and do not have a tolerance then 5mg once a day with lunch should work well enough, if its for pain though I would recommend 3-4x daily

Narcotics have always lowered my sex drive. But I know that for some it allows a better performance. Narcotics make me feel great, but at the same time they make me not even care about sex!

Just depression mostly, and anxiety to a lesser degree. I've never taken anything for physical pain.

yeah they WILL lower sex drive, but for men who have trouble with premature ejaculation they will delay ejaculation times, making the sex last longer and more pleasurable for both involved

well if you are taking them for depression I would do once a day at lunchtime, and once you switch to the wellbutrin try going without them for a few days to see if you can jsut let the wellbutrin do take over for the depression, and your sex drive should naturally come back to life

A psychiatrist prescribed you Percocet for low libido, and at a dose of 10mg twice daily?

o_o

What I wanna know is, how the FUCK did you get Percocets for depression and a low libido? Please introduce me to this doc of yours!!!

You stole the post right out from my fingertips....My sex drive is still pretty damn decent, and lasting as long as you want is always great.

I honestly think hydrocodone should be prescribed for premature ejaculation.

When I was on 150mg a day of Oxy, I would fuck my GF until she came, and go for another hour with her begging me to cum....Not an issue to complain about.

I don't know of a SINGLE Psych that would ever even consider RXing any Opi. I think Mr. Reefer's leaving some important info out here. Could your lack of libido come from a lack of physical attraction to your partner?

No, I have depression, maybe that's it, but I dont have desire trying the task myself or even trying to watch porn. I've tried everything, and still get no response. Maybe some Wellbutrin is in order.

your doctor is a very sweet man. a very sweet irresponsible man, who will loose his dea license soon...

how did a shrink prescribe you opiates for low sex drive and depression? its unheard of. i don't believe you. i don't even think shrinks have the power to prescribe opiates under their license.

This is why I was asking for more information, or at least the real story. NO PSYCH WILL prescribe narcotics.

its actually not unheard of, do a search on opiates and depression, hydrocodone and oxycodone have been studied as antidepressants and have in some cases been found more effective than both SSRi/SNRI's and Tricyclics.

I take oxycodone 15mg 3x daily illegally for depression and anxiety and its one of the best choices I have made in a while actually

Yes, opiates have been used in very limited studies to help people for depression/anxiety disorders. I self-medicated for several years using opiates and ended up addicted and losing jobs, friends, money and trust. Therefore, I have concluded that it is not in the best interest of the depressed patient to be prescribed narcotics such as percocet or any hydrocodone preparation. The only "reasonable" narcotic would be Tramadol or a very, very low dose of buprenorphine (Temgesic perhaps?).

Best choice you've made? Let me know how that turns out a year from now. That's playing with fire. Good luck though. I thought my decision was "good" too. LOL

While it may be (verrrrry) rare, it isn't unheard of....opiates have been used (IMO, irresponsibly) to treat anxiety and depression. Problem with going that route is tolerance, dependency, and the pretty common problem of people with these disorders being at higher risk of addiction/abuse due to self medicating to alleviate symptoms.

FYI---Of COURSE a p-doc would be legally allowed to Rx opiates, they are MD's who have a DEA number, which they need to Rx benzos.

OP....please be very careful for the reasons I outlined above. Those of us with anxiety and depression (have had both all my life) are really at risk for abusing those types of meds due to the fact that they DO help tremendously with the symptoms (anxiety especially!) As far as sex drive goes, the above posters all pretty much nailed it...for a great portion of people taking these types of meds, sex drive is pretty significantly lowered, is not non-existant!

Keep working with your p-doc to find more reasonable options, and if you do decide to stick with the Percocets, limit your uasge to literally one a day, preferrably not every day so that you don't develop a tolerance (where a higher and higher dose is needed to acheive the same effect) and dependency (where your body "needs" the drug and you would experience w/d's without it). A short term course at a low dose shouldn't present any of those problems for you....it is not a feasable long term option for treatment of depression and anxiety. There are MANY of us who wish it was!!

Best of luck!

I've been doing this for the past 2 years now, and its helped way more than its hurt, and it actually works pretty well in conjunction with buproprion 300mg extended release

Listen, I'm not joking at all. He thought that my brain might need more dopamine flow that opiates could provide rather than direct agonists like RLS and parkinsons drugs (which are effective anxiolytics btw).

The doctor has written a few publications on opioids and their uses. One other use was to reduce certain food cravings for extremely obese people.

The guy's just thinking out of the box unlike every other doctor out there.

I've been down the tolerance/dependence/withdrawal road before. Once with benzos, which made me an apathetic, emotionless husk who hated every part of life for 2 days..... and, believe it or not KRATOM, which was actually FAR worse. I was the most depressed I've ever been in my life and I was lashing out at people.

I know the dangers of this. I will NOT go above 5mg tid (3x/day). And I'm taking a few days off after having taken it for about a week now. I don't feel any need to take it. Actually, I only feel a need to take it at work because it's boring as fuck. All I do is sit there and I become consumed in my thoughts, and thats where things get bad.
