Allergic to Valium?

Hey everyone, I received a script from my doc 2 days ago for 5mg of Diazepam (Valium) for anxiety. Last night I was feeling a bit anxious and thought i'd take half a pill to see how it worked, I felt really good. Almost tingly from the inside and really mellow etc. Today I woke up, everything was cool till about 9 am. I started to get really itchy in a few spots, by noon I was scratching my back and shoulders like no tomorrow. I decided to go into the restroom to look and I have big ass hives/rash all down the side of my back, my lower back and across my belly. Some have came down the inside of my biceps to my forearms. There is no tightening in my chest or difficulty swallow/breathing etc. Has anyone experienced this? I just thought it was really weird because it was well after 12 hours of taking it that this all happened. For now I took 1 Benedryl to see what happens. It seems that the rash/hives flair up and are much more prevalent in the spots my body is more warm.

Everything I read made it sound like hiives/rash is a SEVERE side affect of Valium so I just thought i'd hit up fellow BLs to see if anyone has experienced anything like this.. Thanks!

Hmmm... It could be that you're allergic to Diazepam, or it could be one of the fillers or other inactive compounds in the tablet itself.
Have you experienced this when taking any other tablet before? Or any other Benzo?

I hope the Diphenhydramine clears it up :)

Another thought it that it might be down to heat instead of Diazepam but I can't be certain of that.

Thanks for the response. -- I have taken Ativan (1mg atta time) and never had a problem. -- The Benedryl is helping but by God I can barely keep my eyes open and I am trying to watch my Son until the Wifey gets home!!

Heat DEFINITELY has somehting to do with it, but I do not think entirely. When I got home a couple hours ago and looked in the mirror it was bad, pretty good size hives, now that I have been in the AC they have gone WAY down (plus the benedryl). They are all down the inside of my forearm now, which sucks because it looks horrible. Hopefully it all subsides here soon!

No worries :)
Yikes they sound bad :$ Glad to hear they've subsided some though.
Maybe it is souly the Diazepam then. I'll have a look around to see if there's any reports of similar allergic reactions to it.

Anyhoo, I'd suggest trying out something like Clonazepam instead - it's still long acting and is good for Anxiety too. I'm not sure if it's too closely related to Diazepam that you'll get the same effect but it's fairly doubtful ;)
If your doctor suggests a different one though then go for that :) I'll be back to edit with any other instances of skin bizniz I find.
Peace!

--- Edit ---

Here it does list rashes and Hives as "Severe Allergic Reactions", so there we go ;) lol.. Unlucky!

Thanks guys! The hives subsided that same night after the Benedryl and a couple brews (lol). I am gonna head in and talk to him about an alternative. Thanks again!

Maybe you can try the Valium one more time and see if you have the same reaction again. If so, call your doctor and tell him what happened. I'd imagine he can switch you onto something else

People have told me that but man, I am not sure I am game to go through that shit again. It just doesn't seem worth it when I know I can get some Xanax or Ativan and be good to go. The only reason I question whether or not it was the Valium is the fact I didn't get itchy till like 12 hours after taking it. Who knows, I think I will play it safe and just get something new

I don't think with a twelve hour gap between taking the diazepam and getting the hives that you are allergic to it. Just seems to long. I'm allergic to bee stings, and it happens pretty quick if I get stung. I'd try them again like KOA said, but if you start to have any trouble breathing get to the hospital quick. That's when allergies get dangerous, when your throat starts swelling shut. The only reason I don't say just get something different is the Dr. might decide not to give you any benzo because they are all pretty similar and he doesn't want to get sued.

Well I know for a fact I can take Ativan and Xanax with no problems. Maybe it was something else? I didn't eat anything out of the ordinary so I have no idea

It seems hard to believe that it was the Valium because you felt that way 12 hours after taking it while Valium lasts 3-4 hours.

I understand that you can take Ativan and Xanax. My question is, why didn't you just ask for one of those medications instead of picking up Valium?

I had read better things about Valium, family members had taken a few differnt benzos for anxiety and all had told me Valium seem to work the best. I took Xanax a while back and it was a VERY small dose. Keep in mind I do not use benzo's more than needed, on average 30 pills (or 1mg Ativan) lasts me a few months. I did have 3 beers prior to the Valium as well as 1 cocktail after, either way it does seem really weird that it all happened 12 hours later. -- All I know is the Valium made me feel REALLY good, almost like I tingled inside, maybe it was border-line itchy but I didn't really pick up on it? Other than that I take a high grade multi-vitamin and fish oil. Not sure if it would have any weird reaction with either of those?
