hi guys,

I need this answered quickly becasue I will be going out tonight in like 1.5 hours. sorry for the short notice.:|

I have been on valium daily now for almost 3 weeks and am currently on a discontinuation plan. My last dose was 12mg last night.

I want to go out and drink tonight - and hence will not be taking valium tonight.

My questions:

how long before withdrawal symptoms occur in valium since the last dose?

What is the severity of withdrawal symptoms from such a dose I am taking if I stop abruptly (I was orginally taking prob 30-20mg a night for about 2 weeks - yeah I know, abusing it but the last few nights have got it down to around 15mg, and to 12mg last night) - I generally space it out in dosages?

I also suffer from depression (with associated anxiety) and insomnia. If this has much bearing on the withdrawal effects - which it may well have.

i saw the pharmacist and she recommended I do not miss a dose, but at the same time to I think I will have difficulty going to this party and not drinking.

she actually recommended I just drink light beer, and then take a smaller dose (pretty good advice really). But if I were to get drunk, what do you think the consequences of missing on dose would be?

Go with the doc's recommendations and just drink a decent light beer on a very low dose of valium.

Agreed, take half your usual dose of valium and either space every standard drink out with a non-alcoholic one (maybe drink coke and if anyone asks say it's scotch/rum and coke?) or drink light beer. I can't say for certain but I'd assume taking your regular dose of valium and drinking heavily would result in a blackout... and you'd be forever known as a cadbury amongst your friends ;)

Maybe try Peroni Leggera? It's a low-carb, mid-strength beer but looks like a regular imported beer, and tastes halfway decent? I've seen another bluelighter polish off a number of these in an evening and remain reasonably sober :)

Yeah i'm thinking I might just have a pint to get me in the mood a bit. and then stick to light beer, and only do a 5mg valium when i get home.

or is this still pushing it?

I only take the valium at night and would not take it beforehand.

Cascade Lights , 0.9 can drink all night and not get drunk.

Only problem is that you tend to piss alot.

did this thread turned from harm reduction to LIGHT BEER PROMOTION????? lol

as long as u pace your self with the light beers, and not so much val's u shouldn't black out :)

and u'll find it a very nice night out

That's a low dose of valium and it has a long half-life so you shouldn't expect much in the way of WD symptoms from missing one dose.

Everyone here has given good advice, that is not drinking so heavily and perhaps lowering your diazepam dosage. Your tolerance should help you out as well in that regard.

Good luck getting off the diazepam psytaco. :)

A dose of valium isn't likely to fuck you too bad with a lil bit of grog, just don't go overboard.. Also note that valium has an extremely long period of action. So even if you miss that days dose, the one from yesterday is still likely to be a bit active.

An update:

So I went to the party with the best of intentions. I ordered a pot, whilst waiting for my friend to arrive, and thought to myself that this would be my only heavy beer. However, this party was held so exchange students can meet local students, and there were SO many fine women!=D After 5 minutes, I thought fuck it (my will power is weak when it comes to alcohol and women%)). So yeah, I got stuck into the beers and started talking to any cute american, spanish or french girl I could find (it was funny, how they seemed kind of interested - and then when they find out you are Australian BOOM!. its like your sexual value tripled). Anyway, without going into any more detail, it was one my most sexually productive nights in a while.

As for the valium - I have had some noticable withdrawal effects, some physical and some psychological. they have been relatively minor. Insomnia (well I wasn't planning on doing much sleeping, so this doesn't matter), I started getting a bit anxious and agitated as the night wore on, shakes, nausea (but that went away - could be been the alcohol) and diahorrea (again the old alcohol possibly). I was also very sensitive to sound for some reason - it wasn't painful, but it bothered me more and elicited strong emotions. I took about 2mg, at about 9am when I thought most of the booze would be out of my system and feel better.

How long do the withdrawal effects last when I finally taper off 5mg to nothing? and will they be more severe than this?

cheers guys, thanks for listening to my hangover ramble.

^ You've only been on for three weeks so the WD won't be too intense nor too long. Since diazepam is a long half-life benzo, people can experience a long WD process with it, i.e. acute symptoms for a couple of weeks, but as long as you get the dose down really low you shouldn't experience anything too bad.

cheers bro.

yeah, I was just a bit alarmed at how shitty I feel today. But alot of that can be attributed to a hang over.

i was reading on the withdrawal symptoms last night, and to be honest some of them scared the absolute shit out of me. I wish I would of read up on this before I started abusing it.

I'm probably been paranoid but really i just don't need anymore complicated issues in life atm. Already i have been given a massive uni assignment and its only the first week back, plus having to do psychotherapy to deal with the anxiety and depression, and get back in proper contact with all my friends who I have neglected. I just don't want to have to deal with some intense withdrawal experience in addition to all of this stuff.:(

So far the only drugs I can ever say I have experienced withdrawal symptoms from are nicotine, and maybe marijuana when I was a teenager. both seem like school yard shit in comparison to benzo withdrawal.

^ You won't deal with the really intense benzodiazepine WD symptoms as you haven't been on long enough, maybe some rebound anxiety and depression but that should clear up quickly for you... in previous times I would have recommended kava to maybe help in your case, but it's hard to get now unless you are friends with some Islanders... perhaps mulungu could help? I am yet to try that natural substance.
