2010 World Cup, South Africa

hahaha I cant believe Germany froze so badly. They were just horrible and Spain lifted way above what they had previously shown.

Paraguay had the answer to Spain but Germany did not learn the lesson.

There have really been a lot of shit coaching at this years finals but on the other hand this has been the best finals I have ever seen by far.

bit of a messy final game. interesting that when there is a more lenient ref the players take greater risks and play rougher. how about those studs right in the chest shit. others were red carded for far less.

no matter. the better team won, and they did so through a genuine no shit goal. i'd've been fueming and entirely dissatisfied if the dodgy calls for a penalty was awarded in the first half of extra time.

^^lol

Agreed....NED was never really into much of an attack. I had watched all the games of the tournament but still came in not knowing much about SPA...was interested to see how the game would go. The wife was grumbling the whole time about such a boring, low attack game, and of course the plethora of cards early on (Ref from Vegas? Dealing to everyone!). Still, the best team one, no doubt, and not in a shit way.

I feel like I'm alone in thinking that the refereeing was AWFUL. Spain was a bunch of diving cunts and the referees were handing out yellows to the Dutch like they had a personal vested interest in Spain. It was a wretched game to watch. I felt like the Dutch had to walk on eggshells the entire game. Netherlands would get a yellow card, then moments later, Spain would do something equal or worse and get a talking to. It was fucking retarded... IMO.

I'm not saying Spain's not a good team or anything of the sort, but every game they won was 1-0 and the one that they didn't was a 2-1 loss to the Suisse. BORING fucking soccer and the benefit of Spanish favor in officiating.

Mind you, I'm not denying there were times the Dutch deserved a card, but often they got carded unjustly and Spain was rarely under the gun. I felt like the Dutch had to play a different game since almost their entire squad was on warning.

^ the entire tournament was a bunch of diving cunts. every time two players brushed against each other, one of them would tumble to the ground grimacing, clutching the shin or knee. i saw countless replays of incidents where there was almost no contact at all, but this standard response played out.

they role around in absolute agony until they realise they're not getting the foul, then they jump up and get back to playing.

it's unprofessional and, at a sport played at this level, it's just lame...

on the final specifically, the netherlands got breaks too - de jong was incredibly lucky to not be sent off for his kick to the chest of the spanish player.

I agree with the De Jong comment for sure, but I specifically recall a yellow card given to the Dutch when there was LITERALLY no contact whatsoever. I don't remember who was involved, but it was towards the end of the game during a tackle.

Like I said... there were definitely times when the Dutch deserved a card, but it just seemed decidedly one sided.

what's your opinion on the diving issue generally? is it 'just part of the game' or is it an issue?

seeing incident after incident soured the entire tournament for me.

I hate it. I think it's an issue. I hate it during the World Cup, I hate it during the Champions League, I hate it during league play... I just hate it. It's a cheap way to get a call.

I've played all my life and I've NEVER felt the need to dive, if I can't stay on my feet, I've got no business playing the game.

I would be curious to hear opinions on best player....and perhaps most over-rated/under-performing for the tournament. I'll admit not being as up to speed on current top players (probably have to bow to those who keep up with EPL :\ ) but there were definitely some guys I came away respecting. Who did you like? Who did you not?

ironically, it's totally part of the professional game. everyone does it, and there is no way to police it stronger without video or more onfield (goal line) refs. i'm 50/50 on the video ref debate. i see the point how it could become just as much a crutch to the game as solution.

i disagree with your assessment with the final. i also thought it was a messy game, but due to how rough it actually was. the ref made some questionable calls, but nowhere near as harshly as other games i've watched in this cup. i found it interesting that the players would push the boundaries more with such lenience.

World Cup finals by their nature are usually not show pieces. I think the only final that I have seen in the past 20 years that was even remotely open was 1998 between Brazil and France. Having said all that, at least the better team won. The Dutch were never going to play in the "Total Football" style of old. They didn't have the skills of the Spainish and had to play it tight to stop the flow of the game. Even then they butchered 2 clear one on ones that should have won them the Cup.

Personally I will never truely warm to top flight soccer with the theatrics that goes on with diving. I am not for a moment suggesting we should have a open slather, rough and tumble game, but I think there could perhaps be more done after the game to punish blatant cheating. How many fake fouls would be prevented if there existed a judiciary that could ban players following the game? If you cop a blow to the stomach and go down clutching your face to earn a free kick I'd like to see you miss the next game.

Sadly your right. Its a bad part of the game but its going to be hard for much to be done about it really.

To be honest I come away from this world cup quite pleased at the overall improvement of foul play even from just four years ago.

Uruguay for example are a country who never took very well to losing and would throw temper tantrums and lash out and kick the shit out of anything and everything.

The Brazilians generally are not known for this sort of behaviour buit they did show some signs of it this year but the Uruguayans were massively improved as were many of the teams which was great to see.

I thought the manner in which the Dutch went into the game was pretty much to be expected. They knew they had to come up with some way of stopping Spain and they also knew they were not as good as Spain.

There answer was to push the rules to the nenth degree and thats what they did.

I was glad the ref brought out the cards early as it meant those players would behave more or less for the rest of the game. He was a little reticent to show the red but I can understand that.

Anyone who thinks that a World Cup final will be a mind blowing brilliant game doesnt know much about history. They are almost always dour affairs where the psychy of the teams is more about not losing than the possibility of winning.

There is no doubt that the best team won the world cup. There is also no doubt in my mind that the second best football team did not finish second.

I used to love watching the dutch many years ago. Had this team achieved what the other far superior sides failed to achieve then it would have been a travesty of justice to those beautiful teams of the past.

I like the concept of after game video reviews with harsh penalties for those found cheating.

But at the same time if instead of seeing it all as a negative, maybe it can be looked upon as just another part of the theatre that is the world game.
