Richmond Football Club has ruled out illicit drugs and alcohol as a contributing factor to Ben Cousins' shock admission to hospital.

Speaking this afternoon, Richmond's General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron, revealed Cousins was in an induced come in intensive care after being rushed to Melbourne's Epworth Hospital at approximately 11.45am today.

He said preliminary investigations suggested Cousins had had an adverse reaction to a sleeping pill, adding that it was the 32-year-old's girlfriend who alerted paramedics.

Cousins, who has had a well-publicised battle with drug addiction, played in Richmond's come-from-behind victory over Sydney at the MCG on Sunday.

Witnesses say he was unconscious as he was wheeled into hospital on a stretcher today.

Cousins also spent time in hospital before the start of the season with undiagnosed stomach pains.

He has struggled with hamstring problems, but has been among the Tigers' best when on the field.

Cousins was forced to spend 2008 out of the game after being found guilty in 2007 of bringing the game into disrepute.

The Brownlow medallist played in the 2006 premiership for West Coast and has already expressed a desire to play on for Richmond next season.

He was selected by the Tigers in the 2009 pre-season draft and given a lifeline after being sacked by the Eagles.

Why would they put someone in a drug induced coma and further sedate someone that can't wake up from sleeping pills? Doesn't make sense I never heard of such a thing wouldnt some flumazenil and ephedrine be the best coarse of action? Ben cousins has been known to use benzos and i also find it a bit troubling they give AFL stars sleeping tablets after every game to calm them down; from what? too much caffeine and syephrine

Has anyone here ever had a bad reaction from a sleeping pill? if so what reaction? I dont beleive a medication that is scripted so much and someone who has been using it for a long time could have a bad reaction.
 
Being in an induced coma is commonly done as a way to help process whats wrong with someone and find the best action for treatment.

I agree that sleeping pills should be used less with professional athletes, healthy natural sleep is always great for the mind and body. But alot of people have genuine troubles (myself included) getting to sleep. I agree that its strange that he had a reaction to something he has been using for a long time, I would definately say there are other factors.

One thing that goes very under the radar is the harm of mixing alcohol with sleeping pills. One of my dad's mates died from that. And I've heard of it having to other people too.

Sadly, I think this is a case that the truth probably won't come out over. There is the doctor/patient confidentiallity.

Are you kidding? People have adverse reactions to common medications all the time.

We don't know how long he has been using it for either or if he was even prescribed it or what the circumstances are. It's too early to make a judgement.

The thread title is the topic. I'll let the news article go as an example connected to the OPs original questions, but replies need to relate to the questions.

Medically induced coma is normally carried out prior to brain surgery, where reduction of activity is desirable (less oxygen and sugar requirements) or following injury or trauma if intracranial hypertension is indicated. From wiki:

Causes of increased intracranial pressure can be classified by the mechanism in which ICP is increased:

  • mass effect such as brain tumor, infarction with oedema, contusions, subdural or epidural hematoma, or abscess all tend to deform the adjacent brain.
  • generalized brain swelling can occur in ischemic-anoxia states, acute liver failure, hypertensive encephalopathy, pseudotumor cerebri, hypercarbia, and Reye hepatocerebral syndrome. These conditions tend to decrease the cerebral perfusion pressure but with minimal tissue shifts.
  • increase in venous pressure can be due to venous sinus thrombosis, heart failure, or obstruction of superior mediastinal or jugular veins.
  • obstruction to CSF flow and/or absorption can occur in hydrocephalus (blockage in ventricles or subarachnoid space at base of brain, e.g., by Arnold-Chiari malformation), extensive meningeal disease (e.g., infectious, carcinomatous, granulomatous, or hemorrhagic), or obstruction in cerebral convexities and superior sagittal sinus (decreased absorption).
  • increased CSF production can occur in meningitis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, or choroid plexus tumor.
  • Idiopathic or unknown cause (idiopathic intracranial hypertension)
  • Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis
  • Acute liver failure
 
Alcohol and downers were the first "adverse reaction" I thought about it when I heard. You have to feel sorry for the bloke. He has a addictive personality and is employed by an organisation that limits the substances he can use/abuse. It doesn't take much to realise he would simply start to fiend those substances he is allowed access to. Throw in an easy access to a club doctor.
 
why post info re: raised intracranial pressure? Nothing to do with the case as far as i can see

also, if this is a case of sleeping pill overdose, then inducing coma would be quite unusual, but, we dont know the full details.

Plus, the statement was made by a football official not a doctor then reported by the media, thats plenty of chance for 'chinese whispers'

bottom line is, we dont know what happened nor is it likely we ever will

the stories goes his girlfriend couldn't wake him up in the morning. so it makes sense that he could of taken them for sleeping, but just got knocked out for a long period of time.

Someone made the comment of people having adverse reactions to perscription drugs, and that it happens frequently: I had to go to ER once, and call up the psychiatric triage nurse after just 3 days of taking effexor (an antidepressant). my doctor commented this was the worst reaction she had ever seen to the drug.

I feel sorry for the guy. he has undergone a very traumatic and potentially fatal experience. and now he has to put up with everyone across australia judging him and talking about it.
 
It's pretty easy to jump to conclusions and imagine there's more to this story than we know. And how many times have I heard that excuse from junkies. 'Naaaah man I'm not high, I'm just sick/tired/having a reaction to my medication.' 8) yeah right. Who knows, maybe it was a legit adverse reaction, tbh I don't really care as long as the dude's alright.

I think I heard temazepam but I'm not sure.
 
I think his girlfriend is to blame for possibly fucking his career further. From what i have seen of footballer's wife's they aint too smart. I bet he is devo she freaked out. I heard she didn't ring 000 but rang up the club doctor instead. Who users a sleeping pill drug for years then has an adverse reaction? nothing suss
