Hello,
I hope I'm in the right forum for this.
I need to know if my calculations are correct on a little project of mine. It's not illegal (well, not that I know of anyways) and its not costly, but accuracy is vital.
First and foremost, the liquid being tested for additives has (I believe) a high PH - it's a very acidic liquid. I need to make sure the liquid has approximately a ratio of 100 ng/Ml of a specific substance.
The source for the additive I wish to add to the liquid so that it measures out at 100 ng/Ml is available to me in the form of a pill containing 60 mg of desired substance. Obviously that pill has other substances bound to it such as filler etc. The pill weighs .22 grams, so obviously 100 ng will be difficult to extract - but my method for extracting it will be to shave off a quantity of the pill based on the ratio of known substance to pill mass. My numbers are as follows:
Since 30mg = 30,000,000ng and for 100 Ml of liquid, I will need 10,000 ng of substance (100ng / Ml) * 100 Ml = 10,000 ng. Since there is 30 million ng of substance in .22 grams, I will need .0000000007333333333 grams of the pill. An extrodinarily small amount to extract and add to the base liquid since I have no way of measuring weights this small.
Since I have an instrument that can only measure weight to the hundreth of a gram, I would need to crush this pill up and add it to 20,000 grams (44 POUNDS) of a powder that will dissolve nicely and stay out of the way if it's even possible to mix a pill with that much of another substance and guarantee thorough distribution of the pill contents throughout the filler powder. 44 pounds for such a small pill is a hell of a lot. Now I could get say 10 of these pills at which point I would only need 4.4 lbs of some kind of filler powder (whatever that would be) which makes more sense to me and MIGHT actually be dooable.
Here are my questions:
1) Given what I need to acheive, is my thought process correct?
2) Do my numbers seem accurate enough or am I way off base?
3) What kind of an instrument can measure weights that small? Are they very expensive?
4) If I did obtain a "filler powder" in order to create quantities that I can actually measure, what kind of powder would dissolve nicely in water?
If you have another idea for accomplishing this, Id love to hear it. The quantities are unbelievably small - I had no idea that labs measured in quantities that low.
