Hey all, was and am prescribed oxycodone 30mg=40mg and have been taking religiously for years. Now I'm thinking of trying to get off them for awhile so they will actually help my pain again! my tolerance has grown so high my recommended dose does anything, and im not sure there is anything higher then this ?
Any ideas on how to taper my dosage and make my withdrawal as comfortable as possible (although I know it will be hell no matter what)!! please help me through this, or any alternative ideas to get me to feel the meds again withOUT having to stop them would be amazing! Thanks in advance guys. Hope to make bluelighter within the next day or two! woohoooo!! :D have had horrible times attempting to quit in the past and I need to figure this out one way or the other so ANY ANY ideas will be more then greatly appreciated. night yall ill be on tomorrow.

There are 80 mg oxycontin pills as well as stronger opiates if you need them for pain and your use isn't problematic (you mentioned 30-40 being the biggest dose, which it isn't).

Why would you want a stronger dose if you are trying to taper off? Also, I assume you're taking instant release oxycodone (or at least making it instant release), is that correct? Tapering's going to be hard, if you can get your hands on a couple methadone/methadose tablets or suboxone that would probably be easier and quicker. How long you trying to drag this taper out if you do go that way?

^He wants to taper down to a lower dose so he can take them for pain again.

To the OP:Like Psychomimetic stated, there are stronger Oxycodone pills, but I think stronger opioids are in order.Tell your doc that your prescribed dose is no longer effective as it once was,and you would like to try a stronger dose Oxycodone pill,or a stronger opioid.

If your doctor is even somewhat competent they should know that tolerance to opiates is unavoidable and therefor should give you stronger pain meds.you will most likely be switched to 80 mg Oxycontins,or possibly even Opana if you are in the states.Perhaps you could change the breakthrough med from 30 mg oxy ir's to dilaudid. In Canada they would most likely switch you from Oxycontin to hydromorph Contin if the Oxy no longer worked.

dont know if this would work but try go on methadone , work your way down on it so your opiate tolerance is lower then go back on to your pain killers again.

i know its doubtful but its worth a try at least

^Methadone is fucking potent man,it would inrease his tolerance if anything, why go on methadone,go to a clinic everyday, most likely be labeled a "Junkie" by others, get to a stable dose to eliminate w/d's and his physical pain/stay at a lose dose and tough out the discomfort until his body adjusts, then taper down and start conventional pain killers again when he could simply go to a stronger pain killer?

A combo of hydromorphone and oxycodone is pretty common in the states I think, one for breakthrough pain. Depending on the problem being treated, a move to hydromorphone, oxymorphone, morphine, fentanyl or a combo is likely, although I agree that the first thing would probably be a move to 80 mg oxycodone.

Anyway, to the OP, if you still need and want to take pain meds but your current dose isn't working, talk to your doctor, they will give you something that will get rid of the pain.

I do want the opiates to be effective again, however i DONT want to increase the amount I take or get extra prescriptions. I just need to find the best way to taper off because my daily dose is 160mg a day and i DO make it IR because if not I feel absolutely nothing. Ive tried slowly tapering but it is REALLY hard. Is there any substitutes that I could switch onto to prevent withdrawal that are not addictive so I could therfore taper easily ? I dont know much about quitting an addiction but know alot about becoming addicted through constant pain! and this is just not doing the trick anymore even when I "make it IR" help!

Unfortunately no,the only thing that will prevent withdrawal for you now are potent physically addictive opiates/opioids.many BL swear by Subutex/Suboxone,perhaps that will help you taper.

When you find the holy grail, please let us know.

You need to talk to your doctor and get better meds, there is no way around it. Tolerance is a bitch. Even if you do taper down, once you stabilize your tolerance will shoot right back up. It goes up much faster than it goes down.

SIGH the unbeatable problem of modern medicine . The fact of needing a chemical to be able to survive and and feel normal, not sick is rediculous. The thought of not having some with me or being unable to obtain them anymore is scary, it scares me that it scares me. relying on a chemical to live... Its quite .. depressing

I agree! I get so scared of running outta oxy's/ xanax because I feel I NEED THEM TO FUNCTION. It is SOOO depressing:(

Yes. I'm also prescribed xanax and klonopin for my anxiety disorder which is a very intense problem. (which makes this problem with my opiates worse at times) If only someone invested time in finding alternative chemicals that will do just as good a job without causing a physical dependency; even WORSE at times a mental one. obviously nobody has had any luck finding a truly good way to lower your tolerance. I suppose im going to attempt the old fashion way and tough it out.

Nobody said life was easy but these drugs have made it so much more complicated when they're supposed to help!! MIND BOGGLING ughh; lol I give up. I am depressed as well.
I've heard people mention other substances you can take with no addictive side effects that will potentiate opiates so you will feel their effects. Anybody know or have used anything like this ? I'm exploring every POSSIBLE idea. Thank you all so much for the support and the information. I don't know what I'd do without this place; being able to talk to people with the same problems and situations is comforting in its own way.. thanks all.
